Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh Foundation Day

  • The states of Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh celebrate their Foundation Day on February 20, since 1987. This declaration was made by the Indian Government following the 53rd Amendment of the Indian Constitution in 1986. Arunachal Pradesh is also known as the 'Land Of The Rising Sun'. Proudly situated on the edge of the Himalayas, it is renowned for its dawn-lit mountains.
  • Arunachal Pradesh has a rich history that dates back centuries. The state was formerly known as the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA) until it was granted statehood on 20 February 1987. Prior to that, it was a part of the larger state of Assam. The state was divided into 16 districts in 1975, and the first general election for the Assembly was held in February 1978.
  • The history of Mizoram dates back to 1961, when the Mizo National Front (MNF) was formed by local Mizo tribal leaders to demand political rights.
  • The insurgency, which lasted for two decades, eventually resulted in the peace accord between the government of India and the MNF in 1986. This historic agreement paved the way for the establishment of Mizoram as a state of India on February 20, 1987.

  • The theme of World Day of Social Justice 2024 is 'Bridging Gaps, Building Alliances'. The United Nations chose this theme to emphasise the importance of collaboration and partnership in addressing the world's challenges.

International Childhood Cancer Day

  • International Childhood Cancer Day is observed every year on February 15 to raise awareness around the unique challenges of childhood cancers.
  • International Childhood Cancer Awareness Day was established in 2002 by Childhood Cancer International, that aimed at raising awareness about childhood cancer and how it impacts kids, adolescents, their parents and family as a whole worldwide. Childhood Cancer International was founded in the year 1994 and includes some 170 parent support organisations, associations for children in remission or support groups in almost 90 different countries across five continents. The day honours children who have battled cancer and those who mobilise support for research and funding initiatives.

World Anthropology Day

  • World Anthropology Day, which is celebrated on the third Thursday of every February, is dedicated to the field of anthropology and it is celebrated to educate people about the science of human behaviour, biology, and how human societies function. This year it was celebrated on 15 February, 2024.
  • The American Anthropological Association (A.A.A.) first introduced World Anthropology Day in 2015. It was initially called National Anthropology Day, but it was later renamed in 2016. The word 'anthropology' is derived from the Greek word 'anthrology,' which means 'human behaviour.' The study of human behaviour is essential to understanding the evolution of our species and the unique processes that make us humans.

World Radio Day

  • World Radio Day is celebrated on February 13 each year.
  • In 2011, the member states of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared February 13 World Radio Day. It was then adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013 as an international event.
  • The theme for World Radio Day 2024 is 'Radio: A Century Informing, Entertaining and Educating.'

National Productivity Day

  • On February 12, 1958, the National Productivity Council of India was Registered under Societies Registration Act XXI, 1860. Since its inception in 2015, the day has served as a platform for raising awareness about epilepsy, its diagnosis, treatment, and the challenges faced by those living with the condition. This year (2024), the day was marked on February 12, underlining the ongoing efforts to foster community and support among epilepsy patients worldwide.
  • The theme for International Epilepsy Day 2024 'Milestones on My Epilepsy Journey', emphasises the importance of recognizing and celebrating personal achievements amidst the challenges posed by epilepsy.

International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism as and when Conducive to Terrorism

  • Every year on February 12, the world observes the International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism as and when Conducive to Terrorism (PVE Day). This crucial day serves as a platform to raise awareness about the dangers of violent extremism and promote international cooperation in tackling this complex issue.
  • The United Nations General Assembly (in its resolution 77/243) declared February 12 the International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism as and when Conducive to Terrorism (PVE day).
