September 17 'Hyderabad Liberation Day'

  • The Centre announced that it will celebrate September 17 every year as 'Hyderabad Liberation Day'. In a notification, the Union Home Ministry said that Hyderabad did not get independence for 13 months after India's independence on August 15, 1947 and was under the rule of the Nizams.
  • The region was liberated from Nizam's rule on September 17, 1948 after police action namely 'Operation Polo'.

Mauritius Day

  • Mauritius Day is celebrated every year on March 12. This national holiday is a time to commemorate the country's independence from Britain in 1968 and its transition to a republic in 1992.
  • Mauritius Day is celebrated with a colourful parade, including a military parade with the national anthem. The flag-hoisting ceremony is also part of the celebrations.
  • The history of Mauritius Day dates back to 1959, when British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan gave his famous 'Winds of Change' speech, outlining the British government's intention to grant independence to many of its overseas colonies, including Mauritius. This led to an increasing call for self-rule in Mauritius, and the 1966 elections resulted in a victory for an alliance of the Mauritius Labour Party and other self-rule parties.
  • On March 12, 1968, Mauritius was proclaimed a constitutional monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II remaining head of state. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam also became the country's first Prime Minister. Twenty-four years later, on March 12, 1992, Mauritius was proclaimed as a republic within the British Commonwealth.

National Working Moms Day

  • Every year, National Working Moms Day is celebrated on March 12.
  • In December 2017, Working Moms of Milwaukee – a local community – was founded by a mother belonging to that area. She recognised the need to make connections with other mothers in the same area and share the problems that mothers go through. It was the start of a community that came to each other's aid and helped bring each other up. In 2020, Working Moms of Milwaukee started celebrating M arch 12 to appreciate their efforts. In 2022, they realised that they need to expand their celebrations throughout the world. They received massive support, and since then, National Working Moms Day is celebrated every year.

CISF Raising Day 2024

  • The CISF Raising Day is observed to commemorate the foundation of the force. The day is dedicated to honoring the sacrifices and contributions of CISF personnel in safeguarding the nation's critical assets and ensuring the safety and security of the people.
  •  The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) Raising Day is celebrated every year on 10 March. The day is significant as it marks the establishment of the CISF in 1969. The force was created to provide security to various industrial installations, government infrastructure projects, and public sector undertakings in India.

International Women's Day

  • International Women's Day (IWD) is a global event on March 8th, acknowledging women's accomplishments in social, economic, cultural, and political spheres. In 2024, the United Nations' theme is 'Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress,' emphasising the need for gender equality.
  • IWD serves as a worldwide celebration of women's achievements and a powerful call to action for advancing women's rights and opportunities.

Jan Aushadhi Diwas (Generic Medicine Day)

  • The Jan Aushadhi Diwas (Generic Medicine Day) is annually observed across India on 7th March to create awareness about the importance of Generic Medicines and to hihglight the benefits of Pradhan Mantri Janaushadi Pariyojana (PMBJP) .
  • On 7th March, 2019, the Prime Minister (PM) of India, Narendra Modi declared the 7th March of every year as Jan Aushadhi Diwas.
  • The first ever Jan Aushadhi Diwas was observed on 7th March, 2019. 
  • The Jan Aushadhi Diwas is annually organised by the Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI), under the aegis of the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers (MoC&F).
  • Jan Aushadhi Diwas is observed on the final day of Ian Aushadhi Week.  The first week of March (1st March to 7th March) is annually observed as the Janaushadhi Week.

National Safety Day

  • National Safety Day in India is observed every year on March 4 to spread awareness and commitment to working safely. The National Safety Council established the holiday to raise public awareness of all safety regulations, including those about the environment, workplace safety, traffic safety, and human health safety.
  • The National Safety Council (NSC) of India was established on March 41966. This initiated the observance of National Safety Day in 1972, and since then, it has been celebrated every year to raise awareness about occupational safety and health.
  • The theme for National Safety Day 2024 is 'Focus on Safety Leadership for ESG Excellence'.

Geological Survey of India Celebrates 174th Foundation Day

  • The Geological Survey of India (GSI) commemorated its 174th Foundation Day on March 4, 2024. The event was a grand affair, with celebrations held in Kolkata, the Central Headquarters of GSI, and the Southern Region's headquarters in Hyderabad.
  • The Geological Survey of India (GSI) is a scientific agency of India. It was founded in 1851, as a Government of India organisation under the Ministry of Mines, one of the oldest of such organisations in the world and the second oldest survey in India after the Survey of India (founded in 1767), for conducting geological surveys and studies of India, and also as the prime provider of basic earth science information to government, industry and general public, as well as the official participant in steel, coal, metals, cement, power industries and international geoscientific forums.
  • Dr. M. S. Krishnan was the first Indian Head of GSI.
