Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma Re-elected as the President of Badminton Association of India

  • The incumbent president of the Badminton Association of India (BAI), Himanta Biswa Sarma was re-elected unopposed for a second four years term, from 2022 to 2026.
  • Badminton Association of India is the governing body of badminton in India. He was elected during the General Body Meeting of BAI in Guwahati on March 25, 2022. He is also the current Chief Minister of Assam. He was first elected as BAI chief in 2017. Apart from this, Sarma also serves as Vice President of Badminton Asia and a member of the Badminton World Federation Executive Council.
  • BAI is an association registered under the Society's act. It was formed in 1934 and has been holding national-level tournaments in India since 1936.

India Ends Campaign at WTT Contender 2022 Championship with Two Medals

  • India ended its campaign at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender 2022 championship at Doha in Qatar with two medals.
  • Mixed Doubles pair of Manika Batra and Gnanasekaran Sathiyan settled for a silver while Achanta Sharath Kamal bagged a Bronze in Men's Singles at the tournament. In mixed doubles, the third seed Indian pair of Manika Batra and Gnanasekaran Sathiyan lost to the top-seeded Chinese Taipei pair of Lin Yun-Ju and Cheng I-Ching 4-11, 5-11, 3-11.
  • In Men's Singles, four-time Olympian Sharath Kamal went down fighting 3-4 (5-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-7, 11-5, 10-12, 9-11) in the semifinals against China's Yuan Licen. The veteran Indian paddler fought hard but lost and therefore had to be content with a bronze taking India's tally to two medals with one silver and one bronze.

Ajay Jayaram Announces Retirement After Almost 2 Decades of Being a Pro Badminton Player

  • Indian badminton ace Ajay Jayaram who reached a career-best ranking of world number 13 in 2017 decided to call it quits after almost 2 decades of professional involvement in the sport. The 34-year-old who can boast of being a Czech International and Dutch Open Champion took to social media to put up a statement announcing the same. "As all good things come to an end, so is my professional badminton journey of nearly 2 decades. I've decided to retire from competitive badminton and I write this, teary-eyed and with a lump in my throat," read the statement.
  • Jayaram was also a member of the 2016 Indian men's team that claimed a bronze medal in Asia Team Championships. He last played at the Odisha Open Super 100 tournament in January, 2022.

Max Verstappen Wins 2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix

  • Max Verstappen (Red Bull – Netherlands) won the Formula One 2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix at Jeddah Corniche Circuit, Saudi Arabia. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari- Monaco) came second and Carlos Sainz Jr. (Ferrari – Spain) came third. It was the second edition of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and the second round of the 2022 Formula One World Championship. Lewis Hamilton managed to get a point on the board after coming 10th.

Canada Qualify for FIFA World Cup Finals for First Time in 36 Years

  • Canada men's football team qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals for only the second time ever with a 4-0 rout of Jamaica. The nation's only previous appearance in the tournament was 1986 in Mexico.
  • Canada became the 20th team to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup which will feature 32 nations vying for the ultimate prize in Qatar from November 21 to December 18.
  • The remaining 12 teams will be decided in the coming days before the draw on April 1 to determine the eight groups.

SAFF U-18 Women's Championship Title 2022 Won by Indian Women's Team

  • Despite losing 0-1 to Bangladesh, India emerged champions of the 2022 SAFF U-18 Women's Championships because of a better goal difference. India enjoyed a better goal difference of +11 in comparison to +3 of Bangladesh.
  • The valuable player of the tournament and the highest goal scorer was Lynda Kom who scored five goals in total.

Italy Fails to Qualify for 2022 FIFA World Cup after Shock Loss to North Macedonia

  • Italy has gone from winning the European Championship failing to qualify for the World Cup in just eight months. Italy will miss out on back-to-back World Cups for the first time in the national team's storied history, having also failed to get to the tournament in 2018.
  • It was only in July that Roberto Mancini and his players were celebrating winning Euro 2020 at Wembley Stadium, supposedly completing Italian soccer's redemption story.

P. V. Sindhu Beats Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan to Win Swiss Open Title 2022

  • Ace Indian shuttler P.V. Sindhu clinched her second women's singles title of the season with a straight game win over Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan. Playing her second successive final in the tournament, Sindhu, a double Olympic medallist, took 49 minutes to get the better of the fourth seeded Busanan 21-16, 21-8 at the St. Jakkobshalle.
  • For Sindhu, it was a moment of glory as she finally lifted the trophy after losing to Rio Olympics gold medallist Carolina Marin of Spain in the final of last edition. She is the second Indian woman to win the Swiss Open, Saina Nehwal having won in 2011 and 2012.

India's First-ever SAI National Centre of Excellence for Mountain Terrain Biking and Bicycle Moto...

  • The centre to be build in collaboration with the Youth Services and Sports department of Himachal Pradesh is being set up to provide world-class training facilities to Indian cyclists so that they can compete for 18 Olympic medals on offer in the disciplines of MTB and BMX. Owing to the requirement of the sport for a hilly terrain and a suitable climate for training, Shimla emerged as a preferred choice for the NCOE.
  • The collaboration between the centre and the state to set up this world-class facility was formalised with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in March 2022.

Byju's Named a Sponsor of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022

  • Edtech unicorn Byju's was named an official sponsor of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
  • The company would now be able to use the FIFA World Cup logo, badge, and assets to build unique promotions and distribute them to football fans all around the world. As part of the partnership, Byju's would also offer educational content for young fans.
  • The FIFA World Cup 2022 will take place from November 21 to December 18.
