Israel Becomes the First Country to Successfully Shoot Down Drones With 'Iron Beam' Laser Interce...

  • Israel successfully tested a new laser missile-defence system 'Iron Beam' which can destroy any airborne object including drones. Iron Beam is the world's first energy-based weapons system that uses a laser beam to shoot down incoming UAVs, rockets, mortars, long-range missiles, anti-tank missiles etc. The Iron Beam which is developed by the Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is using a directed-energy weapon system and can go a long way in providing aerial defence.
  • Iron Beam works on a fibre laser system to destroy any airborne object. Iron Dome defense system was a great success, with a 90% interception rate against incoming rocket fire.

Army Commanders' Conference Begins in New Delhi

  • The conference is an institutional platform for conceptual-level deliberations, culminating in making important policy decisions for the Indian Army. During the five-day conference, the senior leadership of the Indian Army will review the operational situation along the active borders, assess threats in the entire spectrum of conflict and undertake analysis of capability voids to further focus on capability development and operational preparedness plans.
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to interact with the senior commanders and address the Conference on 21st April.
  • Various agenda points sponsored by regional commands will be deliberated upon by the senior commanders apart from proposals concerning improving works, financial management, introducing e-vehicles, and digitisation in the Indian Army.

Lt. Gen Manoj Pande Appointed Next Army Chief

  • Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Manoj Pande was appointed as the 29th Chief of Army Staff, becoming the first officer from the Corps of Engineers and also the first from combat support arms - the combat arms being infantry, artillery and armoured - to head the 1.3 million Army. He will take over on April 30 when the incumbent Gen Manoj Naravane is set to retire.
  • Lt Gen Pande was commissioned in December 1982 into the Corps of Engineers (The Bombay Sappers).
  • Appointment is still awaited for the post of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) which has fallen vacant following the untimely demise of the country's first CDS Gen Bipin Rawat in a chopper crash in December 2021. Gen Naravane is presently the seniormost and front runner for the post.
  • The tenure of Service Chiefs is 62 years of age or three years whichever is earlier while the age limit for the CDS is 65 years of age with no fixed tenure defined.

Trishakti Corps Conduct EX KRIPAN SHAKTI at Teesta Field Firing Ranges (TFFR)

  • The Trishakti Corps conducted Ex Kripan Shakti, an Integrated Fire Power exercise at Teesta Field Firing Ranges (TFFR) near Siliguri, West Bengal (WB). The exercise was aimed at orchestrating and synergizing the capabilities of the Indian Army and the Central Armed Police Forces to fight an integrated battle.
  • Units of the Trishakti Corps demonstrated their ability to hit hard and swiftly with precision during the exercise. The firing involved employment and firing of all arms and weapon systems including guns, mortars, infantry combat vehicles, helicopters and employment of Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance platforms to execute the 'Sensor to Shooter' concept.

China Holds Military Drills as US Delegation visits Taiwan

  • China deployed fighter aircraft, bombers and warships around self-ruled Taiwan as a visiting US Congressional delegation signalled support for the island, a tour termed by Beijing as "provocative" and raising tension in the region.
  • China conducted the multi-forces drill in and over the area around Taiwan and the East China Sea.
  • According to the PLA, the large-scale drill was called a "joint patrol readiness combat" with emphasis on naval assault. This operation was conducted targeting the recent wrong signals the US sent on the Taiwan question.

Israel Successfully Tests New Laser Missile Defense System

  • Israel's new laser missile defense system has successfully intercepted mortars, rockets and anti-tank missiles in recent tests. The announcement came near the anniversary of the 11-day Israel-Gaza war, in which Gaza's ruling Hamas militant group fired more than 4,000 rockets toward Israel.
  • Israel said its Iron Dome defense system has been a great success, with a 90% interception rate against incoming rocket fire. But officials say the system is expensive to deploy, and the new laser defense will be much more cost-effective.

IAF Ties up with IIT Madras to Develop Solutions to Maintain Weapon Systems

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for technology development and finding indigenous solutions towards the sustenance of various weapon systems. The joint partnership between IAF and IIT Madras aims to accelerate IAF's indigenisation efforts for achieving 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'.I
  • IT Madras in partnership with IAF will significantly contribute in indigenisation efforts by Base Repair Depots (BRDs) of Maintenance Command IAF, towards enhancing sustenance capability, obsolescence management and achieving 'Self Reliance'.
  • Under the ambit of MoU, IAF identified key focus areas involving technology development and finding indigenous solutions towards the sustenance of various weapon systems. IIT Madras will provide consultancy duly supported by research for feasibility studies and prototype development.

Indian Army Gets Combat Ready Vehicles from Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL)

  • The Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) handed over the first lot of the indigenously developed Infantry Protected Mobility Vehicles (IPMVs) to Chief of the Army Staff General Manoj Naravane at a ceremony in Pune, becoming the first private sector company in the country to produce and deliver wheeled armoured combat-ready vehicles for the armed forces.
  • In addition to supply, TASL will also provide 24x7 support to maintain the vehicles at the deployment locations.
  • The IPMVs have been developed and manufactured at the TASL's Pune facility. They have been built on the strategic 8x8 Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP), indigenously designed and developed by the TASL along with the Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (VRDE), a unit of the DRDO.
