IAF Test-fires Extended-range BrahMos from Sukhoi Fighter

  • Six years after India was inducted into the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully fired the maiden "extended range" version of the BrahMos air-launched missile from Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft. The missile achieved a direct hit on the designated target in the Bay of Bengal region.
  • The "extended range' version means the missile can travel a distance farther than 300 km. Before India joined the MTCR, the Russian technology of the BrahMos was restricted as the MTCR limits the export of missile technology which can travel beyond 300 kilometres.
  • Sukhoi jets fitted with existing version of Brahmos (300-km range) are based at Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu and are mandated for a maritime role guarding the sea lane of communication.

N. Venu Gopal is Joint Director of CBI, Supriya Patil Yadav DIG

  • The Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) issued an order appointing senior IPS officers N. Venu Gopal and Supriya Patil Yadav as Joint Director (JD) and Deputy Inspector General (DIG), respectively, in the CBI. Gopal, a 1995-batch IPS officer of Himachal Pradesh cadre was inducted as JD for five years.
  • Yadav, a 2004-batch IPS officer of Maharashtra cadre, was appointed as the DIG on lateral shift basis from Intelligence Bureau for the remaining period of her deputation, which is up to April 17, 2024 (eight years). The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the tenure extension of Anurag, IPS officer of Tripura cadre, for six more months as Joint Director in the CBI.

Indian Navy to Acquire Spy Satellite GISAT-2 to Boost Capability in IOR

    • The Indian Navy plans to purchase a specialised earth imaging satellite Geo Imaging Satellite-2 (GISAT-2), in 2022-23 as part of its modernisation and network-centric combat and communications programme. The satellite is likely to improve the navy's operating capabilities in the Indian Ocean region, which is strategically and geopolitically crucial, especially given China's growing influence.
    • According to information from the Ministry of Defence, the GISAT-2 is one of 21 planned procurements, including several long-term buys. In addition, the navy's capabilities development/modernization is being carried out in line with the long-term objectives in place for the next decade.

MHA Launches 'CAPF Punarvaas' to Facilitate Retired CAPF

  • The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) launched a portal for the benefit of personnel belonging to the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) like CRPF and BSF seeking re-employment after their retirement. The portal, "CAPF Punarvaas", will help retired personnel seeking re-employment to find an appropriate match by uploading their personal details on the Welfare & Rehabilitation Board (WARB) along with their area of expertise and preferred employment location.
  • With the increase in the number of business establishments requiring security services, there has been a substantial growth of private security agencies (PSA), thereby increasing the requirement of security personnel. The initiative is a step towards the welfare of CAPF personnel and will go a long way in meeting their rehabilitation requirements.

Taiwan Scraps Deal to Buy US Anti-submarine Helicopters

  • Taiwan opted out of purchasing anti-submarine helicopters from the United States because they are too expensive.
  • The island was planning to buy up to 12 Seahawk choppers but the deal has been scrapped as Taipei prioritises lower cost, more mobile weaponry to counter any threat from China.

Coast Guard's Second Air Squadron

  • The second air squadron of the Indian Coast Guard was commissioned. This squadron is equipped with the indigenously designed as well as developed advanced light helicopter (ALH) MK-III.
  • The squadron was commissioned at the Coast Guard Air Enclave, Nedumbassery, Kochi. Director-General V. S. Pathania commissioned the 845 squadron (CG) in Kochi.
  • Commandant Kunal Naik is leading this squadron comprising 35 men and 9 officers.
  • The squadron was commissioned to improve the country's self-reliance in the area of long-range maritime surveillance and search and rescue operations. This commission is in line with the government's "Atmanirbhar Bharat" plan. So far 12 ALH MK-III helicopters have been inducted into the Indian Coast Guard with the latest four helicopters being positioned in Kochi with the aim of covering the entire coast of Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep.
