Jason Mott Wins US Literary Prize for 'Masterful' Novel 'Hell of a Book'

  • The North Carolina writer Jason Mott won the National Book Foundation's 2021 prize for fiction, for his novel Hell of a Book.
  • The US foundation's 72nd annual awards were presented online only due to Covid-19.
  • Mott is best known for his 2013 bestselling debut novel The Returned, about the reappearance of dead residents in a Missouri town, which was later adapted into the US TV series Resurrection.

Patrick Radden Keefe Wins 50,000 Pounds Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-fiction

  • Patrick Radden Keefe's "Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty" was awarded the 50,000 pound ($67,000) Baillie Gifford Prize during a ceremony at London's Science Museum.
  • Keefe's book chronicles the billionaire Sackler clan, owner of Purdue Pharma, whose members used their fortune to fund museums and art galleries around the world. A reckoning has come with the revelation that much of that fortune was based on OxyContin, a powerful prescription painkiller that the company developed in the 1990s and marketed aggressively to doctors.

M. Mukundan Bags 2021 JCB Prize for His Book 'Delhi: A Soliloquy'

  • Author M. Mukundan won the 2021 JCB prize for Literature, for his book 'Delhi: A Soliloquy'. The book, which has originally been written in Malayalam was translated into English by Fathima EV and Nandakumar K. The novel, published by Westland, is a story about Delhi through the eyes of its Malayali youth protagonists.

BRO Gets Guinness Recognition for Building Road at 19,024 ft in Ladakh

  • The Border Roads Organisation has made a Guinness World Record for constructing and blacktopping the world's highest motorable road at 19,024 feet at Umlingla Pass in Ladakh.
  • Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry, Director General of the Border Roads Organization (BRO), received the Guinness World Records certificate.
  • The Umlingla Pass road was constructed at an altitude higher than the North and South Base Camps of Mount Everest which are at an altitude of 16,900 feet and 17,598 feet, respectively.

The Hindu Gets Project SIREN Award

  • The Hindu was awarded the Project SIREN Award for Newspapers 2021 for "its consistent high performance on Project SIREN's scorecards measuring responsible reporting on suicide between June 2020 and June 2021."
  • Project SIREN is an initiative of the India Mental Health Observatory (IMHO) under the Centre for Mental Health Law and Policy (CMHLP), which systematically tracks and scores media reports on suicide from major English newspapers and online news publications to promote responsible reporting on suicide among the media.

IIT Gandhinagar Research Scholars Win Gandhian Young Technological Innovation Awards 2021

  • In a twin achievement by the research scholars at IIT Gandhinagar, Harini Gunda, a PhD student of Chemical Engineering, has won SRISTI-GYTI Award 2021, and Dr. Chandan Kumar Jha, a PhD alumnus and now a postdoctoral fellow in Electrical Engineering, has won BIRAC SITARE-GYTI Appreciation Award 2021.
  • Gandhian Young Technological Innovation (GYTI) Awards celebrate the spirit of student innovation in all the fields of engineering, science, technology and design through extremely affordable/frugal solutions or the ones that push the technological edge for various areas of social and industrial applications.
  • The awards are announced every year under two categories, 1) SITAREGYTI given by Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and 2) SRISTI-GYTI given by SRISTI.
  • Harini received this award for developing 'Novel Boron Nano-additives for Improving the Performance of Solid Propellants'.
  • Chandan received the award for developing 'An Intelligent Hand Rehabilitation and Assessment System for Stroke Patients'.

Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank Gets ASSOCHAM Award

  • The Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank (KVGB) was adjudged the best regional rural bank (RRB) under the 'Regional Rural Banks' category, in recognition of its initiatives in the sphere of digital financial services by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), Mumbai.
  • Bank chairman P. Gopikrishna received the award from Reserve Bank of India Regional Director R. Gurumurthy.
  • Mr. Gopikrishna said that nearly 40 villages under KVGB's jurisdiction are converted to 100% digital villages because of the bank's efforts. Those villages have round-the-clock access to Internet banking, mobile banking, micro ATMs, AEPS (Aadhar Enabled Payment Systems), IMPS, and UPI.
