Lok Sabha Speaker Launches 'NIDHI 2.0' Scheme

  • The Speaker of Lok Sabha, Om Birla inaugurated the NIDHI 2.0 (National Integrated Database of Hospitality Industry) scheme, during an event organised by the Ministry of Tourism. The NIDHI 2.0 database will have more inclusivity, by not only including accommodation units, but also travel agents, tour operators and others.
  • The NIDHI scheme was launched by the Ministry of Tourism to facilitate the digitalization of the tourism sector and promote ease of doing business for the hospitality & tourism sector, by encouraging all accommodation units to register themselves on the platform to become part of the hospitality industry.
  • As a part of the occasion, the Ministry of Tourism signed an MoU with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and The Responsible Tourism Society of India (RTSOI) to actively promote and support 'sustainability initiatives' in the tourism sector of each other.

Union Cabinet Approves PM-POSHAN Scheme

  • The Union Cabinet has given approval to start PM-POSHAN scheme to provide mid-day meal to students of more than 11.2 lakh govt. and govt-aided schools across the country.
  • The scheme will run for 5 years and Rs. 1.31 lakh crore will be spent.
  • PM-POSHAN scheme will subsume the existing Mid-day meal scheme. It will be run in partnership with state governments, but the major contribution will be of the Central government.

Koshyari Approves Ordinance to Restore OBC Reservation in Rural Local Bodies

  • Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari approved an ordinance to restore OBC reservation in rural local bodies.
  • The approval comes a day after the state Cabinet sent a revised proposal to the Governor's office after he raised issues over its previous proposal.
  • Last week, months after the Supreme Court scrapped OBC quota in local bodies, the Maharashtra Cabinet had decided to promulgate an ordinance to restore the quota, apart from reservations for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) within the 50 per cent reservation ceiling in rural local bodies.

Patents (Amendment) Rules, 2021- Highlights

  • The Patents (Amendment) Rules, 2021 came into effect in September 2021 by amending the Patents Rules 2003.
  • By amending the rules, Union Government has reduced the patent filing and processing fees that are charged on educational institutions by 80%.
  • This reduction in fees is at par with similar concession available to start-ups under the Start-up India initiative.

Karnataka Assembly Passes Bill to Ban Online Gambling

  • The Karnataka Assembly passed the Karnataka Police (Amendment) Bill banning online gambling or betting in the state with maximum imprisonment of three years and penalty up to Rs. 1 lakh. The bill bans online games, involving all forms of wagering or betting, including in the form of tokens valued in terms of money paid before or after issue of it. It banned electronic means and virtual currency, electronic transfer of funds in connection with any game of chance. The bill is intended to curb gaming through internet or mobile applications. It also enhances the punishment for gaming for the orderly conduct of citizens and to wean them away from the vice of gambling.
