India Unveils Online Climate Dashboard

  • As world leaders prepared to gather for the UN climate change conference, COP26, in Glasgow in the UK, India launched an online dashboard - the 'Climate Equity Monitor' to assess equity in climate action, inequalities in emissions besides energy and resource consumption across the world.
  • The "Climate Equity Monitor" also tracks the climate policies of several countries from the perspective of developing countries.
  • It tracks the performance of "Annex-I Parties" comprising developed countries under the UNFCCC (UN Framework Convention on Climate Change) based on the principles of the Climate Convention, i.e. equity and the principle of Common But Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities (CBDR-RC).

South Korea Inaugurates World's Largest Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Plant

  • The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of South Korea held that the 'Shinincheon Bitdream Fuel Cell Power Plant' at the Shinincheon Bitdream headquarters of Korea Southern Power in Seo-gu, Incheon has been completed and inaugurated. The power plant is operated by South Korea's independent power production company, POSCO Energy and Doosan Fuel Cell. It has a capacity of 78 MW constructed in four stages from 2017. The project cost about 340 billion won ($292 million).
  • It is the world's largest fuel cell plant currently in operation.

Asia Suffered Hottest Year on Record in 2020

  • Asia suffered its hottest year on record in 2020, the United Nations said ahead of the COP26 summit, with extreme weather taking a heavy toll on the continent's development.
  • In its annual "State of the Climate in Asia" report, the UN's World Meteorological Organization said that every part of the region had been affected.
  • The report comes days before COP26, the UN Climate Change Conference being held in Glasgow.
  • The report also laid bare the total annual average losses due to climate-related hazards.
  • China suffered an estimated $238 billion, followed by India at $87 billion, Japan with $83 billion and South Korea on $24 billion.

India among 5 Countries with most Extreme Heat Exposure

  • According to a Lancet Countdown report, India is one of the five countries in the world whose vulnerable populations had the most exposure to extreme heat over the past five years. And this exposure is increasing. Yet, like many countries, India is under-prepared to prevent, mitigate or treat the health effects of climate change.
  • By continuing to support fossil fuels and failing to do enough to adapt to the changing climate, countries including India are endangering the health of their citizens, as well as leaving them at risk of widespread food and water shortages and extreme weather, the report has pointed out.

India at Top in Emissions Related to Crop Burning

  • Climate tech start-up, Blue Sky Analytics, published its report on emissions related to crop burning. In the report, India has been ranked at the top position.
  • As per report, India accounted for 13 per cent of total global emissions in the period of 2015-2020.
  • Report notes a 12.2 per cent contribution by India towards the cropland fire emissions in 2020 alone.
  • The data highlights the new insights into recent trends in biomass fires, including emissions from crop residue and forest residue fires in India.
  • For instance, data in report verifies the downward trend of crop fires between 2016 and 2019. As per report, GHG emissions due to cropland fires have reduced by 11.39 per cent in between 2016-2019.
  • In between 2019-20, GHG emissions have increased by 12.8 per cent. As a result of this, India's global contribution has become 12.2 per cent.
  • Blue Sky Analytics is the Indian Climate tech start-up. It was founded by an IIT alumnus. It is a part of global coalition called "Climate TRACE".
