Assam Government to Launch Orundoi Scheme

  • The scheme is to be launched by the Assam government in 29 districts across the state. Through this scheme, the government seeks to empower women by transferring a minimum amount of Rs. 830 each month directly to the bank accounts of the nominated female head of the household. More than 18 lakh beneficiaries have already been selected by the government under this scheme. This number is expected to reach 22 lakh after the inclusion of districts in the Bodoland Territorial Area.
  • The scheme was announced during the state budget 2020-21. It is to be implemented at an annual budget of Rs. 2400 crore. The scheme is first of its kind in the country. According to the state government of Assam the scheme will suffice the basic requirement of Health and nutrition of a household.
  • The household owning tractor, four wheelers, fridge or TV are not eligible under the scheme. The amount to the beneficiaries under the scheme is to be directly transferred from the eKuber system of Reserve Bank of India.

Prakash Javadeker Launches India Climate Change Knowledge Portal

  • Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change  Prakash Javadekar launched the India Climate Change Knowledge Portal. The portal will have all the major steps the Government is taking at both national and international levels to address  the climate change issues.
  • With regard to climate actions after the Paris Agreement, Mr Javadekar said, India has practically achieved  its  pre-2020 climate action targets. He said, though India is not  responsible for  climate change but  it is taking responsible action to mitigate the challenge. Mr Javadekar also demanded that other countries must commit to  the advance commitments of Kyoto Protocol which has not been followed by the countries that must be done.

Merchant Shipping Bill Draft

  • The Centre issued a draft 'Merchant Shipping Bill, 2020' for public consultation. The proposed legislation aims to repeal and replace the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958.
  • As per the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Merchant Shipping Bill, 2020 has been drafted with the primary aim of promoting the growth of Indian shipping industry by incorporating the best practices adopted by other advanced countries like the US, Japan, the UK, Singapore and Australia.

All of Bengal to Be under Swasthya Sathi Scheme

  • At a time when West Bengal is battling an outbreak of COVID-19 infections, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that the "Swasthya Sathi" health scheme of the government would cover the entire population of the State.
  • Ms. Banerjee said that her government planned to extend the cashless scheme where Rs. 5 lakh insurance is provided to every family in the entire State.
  • "It is a smart card and is being issued in the name of a female family member. I am announcing today that every family in West Bengal, every person, be it a child or an old man or woman, irrespective of their religious affinity, will be covered under this scheme," she said.

Service Export India Scheme

  • The government is looking to revamp a key exports incentive scheme for the services sector, the hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. The proposed revamp could see some widening of the scheme to bring in more beneficiaries and sectors.
  • The Service Export from India Scheme (SEIS) covers nine broad sectors, including business services, communication, construction and tourism.
  • SEIS was launched in 2015 to boost services exports. It offers incentives of 5-7% of net foreign exchange earned.
  • Under the scheme, benefit is extended in the form of duty credit scrip which enables the holder to import all goods which are freely importable without payment of basic customs duty.
