Armed Forces Veterans Day

  • In India, the Armed Forces Veterans Day is observed each year on 14 January since 2017 to acknowledge and honour the selfless devotion and sacrifice of our veterans in the service of the nation. The day was initially called Armistice Day. 2021 marks the 5th Armed Forces Veterans Day.
  • The day is observed as a mark of respect and recognition of the services rendered by Field Marshal KM Cariappa OBE, the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces who retired on 14 January 1953.

Biren Singh Virtually Inaugurates Cherry Blossom Festival

  • The 4th edition of the Cherry Blossom Festival, Mao in Manipur was virtually inaugurated by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. However this year, the authority decided to scale down the festival due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Festival featured the picturesque landscape of Mao adorned with beautiful cherry trees laden with blooming flowers which have traditionally attracted visitors from across the world.
  • Manipur has been celebrating the festival every year since 2017.
  • The festival which featured the picturesque landscape of Mao town adorned with beautiful Cherry Blossom flowers was streamed live from 2 pm on various social media platforms.
  • The Mao area of Senapati district in Manipur is known for Cherry Blossom, a plant which is popularly known as Sakura in Japan.

Bangladesh Declared as 'Country in Focus' for 51st IFFI

  • Bangladesh has been chosen as the 'Country in Focus' for the 51st International Film Festival of India (IFFI). The festival will be held at Goa from January 16 to January 24, 2021. The Country in Focus is a special segment that recognizes the cinematic excellence and contributions of the country. This section at the 51st IFFI will showcase four films from Bangladesh.
  • The International Film Festival of India (IFFI), is being held annually since 1952, in Goa. The event is organised jointly by the Directorate of Film Festivals (under Ministry of Information and Broadcasting) and the state Government of Goa.

National Youth Day

  • National Youth Day is celebrated on 12th January being the birthday of Swami Vivekananda. In 1984 the Government of India declared this day as National Youth Day and since 1985 the event is celebrated in India every year. Swami Vivekananda the One of the Most Famous Philosopher or Monk in the World.
  • From 12th to 16th January National Youth Festival is celebrated every year. Along with the National Youth Festival, this year, the National Youth Parliament Festival is being organised. Due to COVID-19, the 24th edition of the National Youth Festival is being held in a virtual mode.
  • The National Youth Day is observed all over India at schools and colleges, with processions, speeches, music, youth conventions, seminars, Yogasanas, presentations, competitions in essay-writing, recitations and sports on 12 January every year.

26th Kolkata International Film Festival Inaugurated

  • The 26th Kolkata International Film Festival was inaugurated. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and actor Shah Rukh Khan were present at the online inauguration programme. The inauguration was very different from what it has been for years now, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • This year, 81 full-length feature films and 50 short films and documentaries from around 45 countries would be screened at eight venues over the next one week.
  • KIFF is usually held in November every year but had to be postponed because of the pandemic. 

National Road Safety Week

  • National road safety week is celebrated from 11th January to 17th January every year in India to create awareness about road safety and minimize road accidents & save life.
  • This year (2021) we are celebrating 32nd National Road Safety Week.
  • At first in the year 1989 awareness for the National Road Safety Week was celebrated and at that time about 36,000 had lost their lives. So this tragic story is related to the observation of this awareness week.
  • Later in the year, 2010 March 15 gave sanction to the National Road Safety policy by Cabinet Union of India which was recommended by the Sunder Committee through a written document in 2007 February.
  • The theme for the 32nd National Road Safety Week 2021 is 'Safe yourself to save your family'. Apply all the safety measures while going through a vehicle and always follow the traffic rules.

World Hindi Day

  • The World Hindi day is celebrated every year on January 10 in order to promote the language world-wide.
  • It is celebrated by Indian Embassies that are located all over the world. The day is being celebrated world wide since 2006.
  • The National Hindi Day is different from that of World Hindi Day. It is celebrated on September 14 every year.
