The Navy will coordinate the second edition of the coastal defence exercise on January 12 and 13. It will be undertaken along the entire coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone of India.
Sea Vigil 2021, a biennial exercise that began in January 2019, "will be undertaken along the entire 7516 km coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone of India and will involve all the 13 coastal States and Union Territories along with other maritime stakeholders, including the fishing and coastal communities.
The exercise is a build up towards the major Theatre-level exercise TROPEX (Theatre-level Readiness Operational Exercise) conducted by the Navy every two years.

India to Get UN Tag of International Disaster Response Force for NDRF
India could soon be a part of the United Nations (UN) mandated international disaster rescue operations as the country's federal contingency force, NDRF, is expected to obtain a globally recognised standardisation later this year.
The authorisation will be done by the Switzerland-headquartered INSARAG (or the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group) which is a network of more than 90 countries and organisations under the UN umbrella to deal with urban search and rescue related issues.
INSARAG committee, comprising Australian and Singaporean experts, has conducted preliminary review of NDRF teams in September, 2019, but the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic put the process on a back burner for a while.

India Readying to Sign Major Agreement with France for Closer Defence Cooperation
After signing the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement or BECA with the United States of America late last year, India is readying to sign a major agreement with France, leading for closer defence cooperation, particularly between the two navies.
The Indian government has already cleared the decision that will lead to closer information exchange between India and France. The information exchange will be at the tactical level and theoretically, sources said, any information that has operational significance can be passed on in real-time by France to India and vice versa.
The exchange can be at 'ship level' and during difficult times like conflict, the exchange can prove to be crucial.
The new agreement comes just before the visit by Emmanuel Bonne, the diplomatic advisor to the president of France for discussions. It is also another sign of international support for India as the face-off with the Chinese People's Liberation Army in East Ladakh continues.
The French Navy is present in strength in the Indian Ocean area. The agreement with India will benefit both navies.

Britain Signs 550 Million Pound Weapons Contract for F-35 Jets
Britain signed a 550 million pounds ($751 million) contract with European weapons-maker MBDA to manufacture surface-attack missiles for use on the country's F-35B fighter jets.
As per Britain, making the new missiles, known as SPEAR3, would enhance the UK's future combat air capability and support more than 700 jobs in the country.
MBDA is jointly owned by British defence company BAE Systems, European aerospace giant Airbus and Italy's Leonardo.

Lt Gen Shantanu Dayal to Take Charge as Deputy Chief of Army Staff
Lt Gen Shantanu Dayal has been named the new Deputy Chief of Army Staff (DCOAS). Lt Gen Dayal is the Corps Commander of the Tejpur based 4 Corps.
He will take the place of Lt Gen SS Hasabnis who superannuated on December 31 as soon as his replacement arrives.
Indian Army has undergone a major reshuffle at the top within the Army Headquarters and at the various other formations including the Corps Commanders, administrative and training institutions witnessing the change of guard.
