Indian Army & IAF to Induct 16 Indigenous Laser-Based Drone Defence Systems
In a boost to India's aerial security and counter-drone warfare capabilities, the Indian Army and Indian Air Force are set to induct 16 home-grown Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction Systems (IDDS). These laser-based defence systems, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), are capable of neutralising enemy drones at a distance of 2 kilometres. The new induction comes at a time when hostile drone activity, including incursions along the border and swarming tactics, pose a growing threat to military and civilian infrastructure.
According to defence officials, the Mark 2 version of DRDO's IDDS will use a 10-kilowatt laser beam, enabling twice the engagement range compared to its predecessor, which had a 1-km targeting capability. This laser will be capable of disabling surveillance sensors and damaging drone structures, offering non-kinetic precision defence

DRDO Unveils New Man-Portable Underwater Vehicles
In a fresh development, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) created a new class of lightweight autonomous underwater vehicles that can be carried and deployed by personnel. The defence ministry announced the achievement.
This next-generation system features several underwater drones fitted with side-scan sonar units and sub-surface cameras, allowing them to identify suspicious, mine-like objects in real time.
According to the defence ministry, these autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) use advanced deep-learning algorithms onboard to automatically recognise and categorise underwater targets. This capability cuts down the need for constant human monitoring and shortens overall mission duration.
The man-portable AUVs were designed and produced by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), a DRDO facility based in Visakhapatnam.
