Max Verstappen Won Miami Grand Prix 2022

  • F1 world champion Max Verstappen won the inaugural Miami Grand Prix for Red Bull after defeating the Ferrari rival Charles Leclerc. Leclerc (Ferrari) finished second and Spanish teammate Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) placed third in the Miami Grand Prix 2022. The victory cut Leclerc's lead over Verstappen to 19 points in the championship, while the Monegasque's Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz completed the podium.
  • Verstappen's third victory of the season was hard fought, even though he led for the majority of the race. A crash between Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris on Lap 41 triggered the safety car, and when racing resumed on lap 47, Leclerc pushed hard to retake the lead.

Annu Rani Breaks Her Own National Mark in Women's Javelin Throw

  • Olympian Annu Rani broke her own women's National record in the fourth Indian Open javelin throw meet in Jamshedpur. The 29-year-old from Uttar Pradesh, who was eighth in the 2019 World Championships in Doha, threw 63.82m in her opening attempt that bettered her previous best of 63.24 which came in the Federation Cup in Patiala in 2021. She had another good throw, 60.10, in her second attempt.
  • It was the eighth time Annu, the 2019 Asian silver medallist, was breaking the National record after first achieving the feat in 2014.
  • Madhya Pradesh's Vivek Kumar (under-20 men, 68.67m), Haryana's Yash Saini (under-18 boys, 67.42m) and Delhi's Disha (under-18 girls, 34.87m) won the gold in other categories on the opening day of the two-day meet.

India's Abhay Singh Wins Archi Factory Open Squash Tournament in France

  • Unseeded Abhay Singh of India won his first PSA tour title, defeating Robin Gadola of Switzerland, seeded fifth, 11-6, 14-16, 9-11, 11-9, 16-14 in the men's final of the Archi Factory Open squash tournament at Lorient (France). Abhay saved three match-points in the fifth and final game to triumph.
  • The 23-year-old had produced the biggest upset of the Challenger 5 level tournament, when he defeated top-seeded Ivan Perez of Spain in three games in the second round.

Carlos Alcaraz Wins Madrid Open Title 2022

  • Carlos Alcaraz (Spain) clinched the men's singles Madrid Open title 2022 after beating the defending champion Alexander Zverev (Germany). Alcaraz has also defeated Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic (world No.1) to reach the final. It is his second Masters 1000 crown after Miami 2022 and his fourth title of the year. The 19-year-old is the youngest player since start of the ATP Tour in 1990 to defeat three top-five players at the same event.
  • Ons Jabeur (Tunisia) clinched the women's singles title to become the first African player to win a WTA 1000 event.

Priyanka Mohite Becomes First Indian Woman to Climb Five Peaks above 8,000 Metres

  • Priyanka Mohite from Maharashtra's Satara district became the first Indian woman to climb five peaks above 8000 metres. Priyanka achieved the milestone after climbing Mount Kanchenjunga. Priyanka works for a pharmaceutical research company in Bengaluru. In 2020, she also won the prestigious Tenzing Norgay Adventure Award. The 30-year-old climbed Mount Everest in 2013, Mount Lhotse in 2018, Mount Makalu in 2019 and Annapurna 1 in 2021. Notably, she is also the first Indian woman to climb Annapurna 1 and Makalu.
  • After 2013, she climbed the second mountain in 2018 as the snowstorm devastated Nepal in 2014 and the earthquake in 2015.
  • Notably, Priyanka wanted to climb Mount Kanchenjunga in 2020, but could not do so due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a teenager, she started climbing mountains in the Shayadri of Maharashtra.In 2012, Priyanka climbed Bandarpunch. Bandrapunch lies in the mountain massif of Uttarakhand's Garhwal division. In 2015, Priyanka climbed Mt. Menthosa which is 6443 m above sea level. It is the second-highest peak in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul and Spiti district.

Avinash Sable Hits New High, Breaks 30-year-old National Record

  • Ace Indian athlete Avinash Sable smashed the 30-year-old men's 5,000m national record at the Sound Running Track Meet at San Juan Capistrano, California. Sable, who also holds the national record in the 3,000m steeplechase, clocked 13 minutes and 25.65 seconds to finish 12th at the meet. Norway's Tokyo Olympics 1,500m gold medallist Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the race with a timing of 13:02.03s.
  • The 27-year-old armyman, a farmer's son from Mandwa village in Beed district of Maharashtra, broke Bahadur Prasad's long-standing record of 13:29.70s, set in Birmingham in 1992. Sable thus broke the Indian athletics' second longest-standing national record. The longest-standing national record is that of marathoner Shivnath Singh (2:12:00s), which has stood for 44 years since 1978. Sable also holds the half marathon (21.0975km) national record of 1 hour and 30 seconds, which he had set in 2020 on way to the gold at the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon.

Nepal's Kami Rita Sherpa Climbs Mount Everest for 26th Time to Set New World Record

  • Nepal's legendary climber Kami Rita Sherpa climbed the Mt Everest, the tallest peak in the world for the 26th time to set a new world record. Leading an 11-member rope fixing team, Kami Rita and his team reached the summit, breaking his own previous world record.
  • As the Everest climbing season is approaching fast and hundreds of climbers are waiting for fair weather to reach the top, Kami Rita and his team went to the top of Everest to fix the ropes so that the Everest expedition becomes easier for the other climbers.
  • Born in 1970 in Solukhumbu district, he first climbed the Everest in May 1994. His father was among the first professional Sherpa guides after Everest was opened for foreign mountaineers in 1950. His brother, also a guide, scaled Everest 17 times.
  • According to Nepal's Tourism Department, 316 people have applied to scale Everest this season.

Asian Games 2022 Postponed Indefinitely

  • Randhir Singh, the acting President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) said that the Asian Games scheduled to take place in the Chinese city of Hangzhou in September was postponed until 2023.
  • The 19th edition of the multi-sports Games, second in size only to the Summer Olympics, was scheduled to take place from Sept. 10-25 in the capital of Zhejiang province, some 175 kilometres southwest of Shanghai.
  • No reason was immediately given for the postponement.

Hockey India Senior Women's National Championships 2022

  • The 12th Hockey India Senior Women National Championship 2022 began in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. A total of 27 teams will vie for top honours in the 12-day tournament. The participating teams are divided into eight pools.
  • Teams in Pool A are Hockey Madhya Pradesh, Hockey Chandigarh, and Hockey Bihar, while Pool B features Hockey Haryana, Assam Hockey, and Hockey Bengal.
  • Pool C consists of Hockey Punjab, Chhattisgarh Hockey, and Tripura Hockey, while Pool D features Hockey Maharashtra, Hockey Rajasthan, Hockey Uttarakhand.
  • Hockey Jharkhand, Hockey Andhra Pradesh, and Le Puducherry Hockey have been included in Pool E, while Hockey Karnataka, Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu and Hockey Arunachal, Hockey Andaman & Nicobar have been slotted in Pool F. Pool G consists of Uttar Pradesh Hockey, Delhi Hockey, Goans Hockey, and Hockey Gujarat, while Pool H features Hockey Association of Odisha, Kerala Hockey, Telangana Hockey, and Hockey Himachal.
  • After eight days of pool matches, the Quarter-Finals will be played on 14 May 2022, the Semi-Finals will be held on 16 May 2022 and the Medal matches are scheduled for 17 May 2022.

BCCI Bans Journalist Boria Majumdar for Two Years in Wriddhiman Saha Case

  • The decision was made by the BCCI Apex Council in response to a committee's investigation report into the charges levelled by Saha. The board's vice-president Rajiv Shukla, treasurer Arun Dhumal, and Apex Council member Prabhtej Singh Bhatia served on the investigation panel.
  • The ban includes not getting press accreditation for any matches in India, a prohibition on interviewing centrally contracted players, and no access to any of the cricket board's or state units' facilities.
  • Saha had alleged that he was intimidated by Majumdar for not giving an interview. The wicketkeeper-batsman had revealed all the details to a BCCI committee probing the matter. BCCI had formed a three-member committee in March 2022 to probe into the 37-year-old's allegations against Majumdar.

World Snooker Championship 2022: Ronnie O'Sullivan Claims Record-equalling Seventh World Title

  • Ronnie O'Sullivan claimed his seventh World Championship title with an 18-13 win over Judd Trump to equal Stephen Hendry's record in the modern era. O'Sullivan, 46, becomes the oldest world champion in Crucible history, eclipsing Ray Reardon, who won his sixth title aged 45 in 1978.
  • O'Sullivan's triumph will add more fuel to any debate over who is the greatest snooker player of all time. The Englishman has now won 39 ranking titles, holds almost every major record in the game and will finish the season as the world's top ranked player.

JAIN University Becomes the Khelo India University Games 2021 Champions

  • JAIN University was the winner of the Khelo India University Games 2021. The University team topped the chart with 20 gold, 7 silver and 5 bronze medals, followed by Lovely Professional University (LPU) with 17 golds and Punjab University with 15 gold medals.The swimming team of JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) swam to glory with more than 20 medals in several swimming events. Siva Sridhar emerged as the star swimmer by winning 11 gold, while Olympian Shrihari Natraj won 3 gold medals while posting a record-breaking performance. Shrungi Bandekar won 4 golds in various women's swimming events.
  • Athletes and delegates from universities across India were overwhelmed with the hospitality at the JAIN Global Campus. These facilities included comfortable boarding arrangements and accommodations, catering services, nutritious food, and other entertainment and fitness facilities. The evening entertainment programmes filled with dance, theatrical plays, and musical nights won the hearts of every spectator.
  • A total of 20 games were played and participated by 3900 students from 210 Universities in the second edition of the Khelo India University Games. The Games introduced indigenous sporting competitions such as Yogasana and Mallakhamba for the first time in the history of national sports.

Dhanush Srikanth Wins Gold, Shourya Saini Bags Bronze in Men's 10m Air Rifle Event at Deaflympics

  • Dhanush Srikanth struck gold in the men's 10m air rifle competition on day three of the ongoing 24th Deaflympics at Caxias do Sul, Brazil, ensuring a golden start to India's campaign at the Games. Shourya Saini put the icing on India's cake with a bronze, finishing behind Korea's Kim Woo Rim in the eight-man final.
  • Hailing from Telangana, Dhanush trains at Gangan Narang's academy in Hyderabad. Under the guidance of the Olympic bronze medallist shooter, Dhanush produced a fine performance to win his his career's biggest prize at the Games.
  • Dhanush and Shourya, who were also helped by National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) coaches Anuja Jung and Priti Sharma for the marquee sporting event, shot well throughout the day to emerge as deserving medal winners.

India Further Cement Lead at the Top in ICC Men's T20I Team Rankings

  • India further cemented their position at the top of the ICC Men's T20I Team Rankings following the annual update. The Rohit Sharma-led side's lead over England on the top of the charts has extended to five rating points, from one previously.
  • India are now on 270 points, while the second-placed England have logged 265 points. Pakistam South Africa and Australia are the tied, fourth and fifth-placed teams with 261, 253 and 251 points, respectively.
  • India defeated New Zealand, West Indies and Sri Lanka on home turf, under Sharma's captaincy. Sharma took over from Virat Kohli.
