Carlsen Beats India's Arjun Erigaisi to Clinch Julius Baer Chess Title

  • Norwegian Magnus Carlsen became the first player in the world to break the 2900 Tour Rating barrier following a crushing win over Indian teenager Arjun Erigaisi, and clinched the Julius Baer Generation Cup, the seventh leg of the USD1.6 million Meltwater Champions Chess Tour.
  • The world No. 1 needed just two games to take the seventh leg of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour, ending Erigaisi's challenge 2-0.
  • It is Carlsen's fourth tournament win of the Tour season and extends his advantage at the top of the overall leaderboard.

Eliud Kipchoge Breaks the World Record at the 2022 Berlin Marathon

  • Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge enhanced his reputation as arguably the greatest marathon runner when he broke his own world record by 30 seconds at the Berlin Marathon. The Kenyan's 2:01:09 was a major upgrade on his 2:01:39 also set in Berlin four years ago.
  • The Berlin marathon course is considered the fastest in the world because of the flat smooth roads. Kipchoge's record was the 12th time a marathon world record was set in Berlin. Of these three were by women.

Kohli Now India's Second-highest International Run-scorer; overtakes Dravid

  • Virat Kohli surpassed Rahul Dravid and became the second highest run-scorer for India in international cricket.
  • The star batter accomplished this feat in the third T20I against Australia in Hyderabad.
  • Now, Kohli has a total of 24,078 runs in 471 matches across 525 innings at an average of 53.62. His best individual score in cricket is 254*. 71 centuries have come from his bat along with 125 half-centuries.
  • He has surpassed Indian great Rahul Dravid, who has scored 24,064 international runs for the Indian cricket team. Though Dravid's international cricket run tally stands at 24,208, the rest of his 144 runs have been scored as a part of teams like Asia XI, ICC World XI.
  • The leading run scorer for Team India in international cricket is none other than Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar. In 664 matches across 782 innings, Tendulkar has scored 34,357 runs at an average of 48.52. 100 centuries and 164 half-centuries have come from his bat, with the best score of 248*.

Former India Captain Dilip Tirkey is New Hockey India President

  • Former India captain Dilip Tirkey was elected unopposed as the new president of Hockey India (HI). The three-time Olympian, regarded as one of India's best defenders, was the favourite to take over as the president after he filed his nomination as the president of Odisha's hockey federation.
  • The elections were supposed to be held next month, but Tirkey was named the president after Hockey Jharkhand president Bhola Nath Singh withdrew his candidature for the post. Singh was elected unopposed as the secretary general of the new HI executive. Singh is a known loyalist of Narinder Batra, the former president of the Indian Olympic Association, International Hockey Federation (FIH) and the HI. The Tamil Nadu federation's chief, Sekar J Manoharan, was also elected unopposed as the new treasurer.

Mithali Raj, Sourav Ganguly Lead Tributes to Jhulan Goswami

  • Former India women's team skipper Mithali Raj led the tributes to veteran India pace bowler Jhulan Goswami who retired from international cricket, saying her longevity was beyond compare.
  • Indian women's cricket team gave a fitting farewell to the legendary bowler in her last international game, with a 16-run victory in a low-scoring third and final T20I and 3-0 series whitewash over England at Lord's.

SC Appoints Ex-judge Justice L. Nageswara Rao for Amending Constitution of IOA

  • The Supreme Court appointed former apex court judge Justice L. Nageswara Rao for amending constitution of Indian Olympic Association and preparing electoral college.
  • A bench headed by Justice D. Y. Chandrachud said that the ex-top court judge would ensure a fair and development-oriented approach for the future of the Olympics in the country.
  • The apex court asked Justice Rao to prepare a road map for amending the constitution and holding elections by December 15, 2022.
  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on September 8 issued a final warning to IOA to resolve its governance issues and hold elections by December, failing which the world sports body will ban India.

Harmanpreet Powers India to First Series Win in England in 23 Years

  • Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur smashed a scintillating unbeaten ton to power India to a comprehensive 88-run win in the second ODI, that sealed country's first series win against England since 1999.
  • A vintage Harmanpreet rekindled the memories of 2017 World Cup with a magnificent 143 not out which came off just 111 balls as India put on board a mammoth 333 for 5.
  • India bundled out England for 245 in 44.5 overs with medium pacer Renuka Singh (4/57) claiming four wickets.
  • The last time Indian women won an ODI series in England was in 1999 when they triumphed 2-1.

Elvis Ali Hazarika Becomes First from North-east to Cross North Channel

  • Elvis Ali Hazarika a veteran Assamese swimmer became the first from the North-east to cross the North Channel. The strait between north-eastern Northern Ireland and south-western Scotland is the North Channel.
  • Elvis Ali Hazarika also became the oldest Indian swimmer to swim across the North Channel. To attain this feat, Elvis and his team clocked a timing of 14 hours 38 minutes.
  • In 2019, he became the first person from Assam to swim across the Catalina Channel in the United States of America.
  • Elvis also became the first Assamese to successfully swim from Dharamtar Jetty to the Gateway of India, the Arabian Sea, in November 2021. The length of which is approx 38 kilometres.
