'Horse Ridge', Intel's New Chip for Commercial Quantum Computers

  • Quantum computers aim to carry out tasks in just a few minutes that would take today's best conventional computers thousands of years. But in nearly every photograph of the devices, there's a tangle of wires in the background connected to equipment that controls the quantum computer.
  • Intel Corp announced a chip that it hopes will change that. The Santa Clara, California-based chipmaker announced a chip called "Horse Ridge" that is designed to take all the work being done by the wires and shrink it down to a chip and electronics about the size of a tea cup saucer.
  • Quantum computers remain years away from everyday use but have drawn the interest of major technology companies. In October, researchers at Alphabet Inc's Google said they had created a machine that can outpace conventional computers. Other major technology firms such as International Business Machines and Microsoft Corp are also pursuing the technology.

Sustainable New Material for Carbon Dioxide Capture

  • In a joint research study scientists have developed a new material for capturing carbon dioxide. The new material offers many benefits -- it is sustainable, has a high capture rate, and has low operating costs.
  • The new material is a bio-based hybrid foam, infused with a high amount of CO2-adsorbing 'zeolites' -- micro porous alumino silicates. This material has been shown to have very promising properties. The porous, open structure of the material gives it a great ability to absorb the carbon dioxide.

SpaceX Delivers Mice, Worms and Robot to Space Station

  • SpaceX made an early holiday delivery to the International Space Station (ISS), bringing muscle-bound "mighty mice," pest-killing worms and a smart, empathetic robot.
  • The station commander, Italy's Luca Parmitano, used a large robot arm to grab onto the Dragon three days after its launch from Cape Canaveral.
  • The two spacecraft soared 420 kilometers above the South Pacific at the time of capture.
  • It marks the third visit for this recycled Dragon. Flight controllers quickly secured the capsule to the orbiting lab, paving the way for the hatch to open and the unloading to begin. The capsule holds 3 tons (2,720 kilograms) of supplies, including 40 mice for a muscle and bone experiment.
  • There also are 120,000 roundworms, or nematodes of a beneficial variety that are part of an agricultural study aimed at controlling pests here on Earth.
  • The capsule also has a large, round robot head with artificial intelligence and the ability to sense astronauts' emotions. Named Cimon, it's an improved version of what flew up in 2018 to be tested as an astronaut's helper.

ISRO to Launch RISAT-2BR1 Surveillance Satellite

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is preparing to launch an earth observation satellite named RISAT-2BR1 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on December 11, 2019.
  • The RISAT-2BR1 is the second satellite in the RISAT-2B series and the launch of this satellite will boost the capability of Indian security agencies to carry out the surveillance of earth from the space.
  • ISRO had launched the first satellite in the RISAT-2B series on May 22, 2019 to replace the ageing RISAT-2.

NASA's Solar Mission Sends Spectacular Data Trove

  • NASA's Parker Solar Probe, having survived its closest encounter so far with the Sun, sent back a spectacular trove of data on its corona, the super-hot outer edge of its atmosphere.
  • The car-sized probe, launched in August 2018, will come within some six million kilometres of the Sun's surface during a series of fly-bys at other distances and trajectories over seven years.
  • It is hoped it will allow a better understanding of the solar wind and electromagnetic storms, which can cause chaos on Earth by knocking out the power grid.
