UAE Launches 'Hope' Mission to Mars

  • The United Arab Emirates launched its first-ever interplanetary 'Hope' probe mission to Mars from Japan's Tanegashima Space Centre.
  • The spacecraft is expected to reach Mars orbit in about 200 days from now and then begin its mission to study the Red Planet`s atmosphere. Once it enters Mars` orbit in the first quarter of 2021, the Hope probe will mark the UAE`s 50th anniversary.
  • The Hope probe will be the first to study the Martian climate throughout daily and seasonal cycles.

ICAT Launches Automotive Technology E-portal ASPIRE

  • The International Centre of Automotive Technology (ICAT) launched an automotive technology e-portal, Automotive Solutions Portal for Industry, Research and Education (ASPIRE). The key objective of this portal is to enhance the technological capability of Indian automotive sector through exchange of knowledge and expertise.
  • It was launched to facilitate the initiative of the Department of Heavy Industry (DHI), Govt. of India to promote, R&D and product development in India for various sectors.
  • In Regard to this, 5 other portals are being developed for specific sectors by different organisations namely:
  • Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) for power sector equipment, HMT (formerly Hindustan Machine Tools Limited) for machine tools, CMFTI for manufacturing technology, ICAT and Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) for the automotive sector.

Cocooned Black Holes Found Hiding in Plain Sight

  • More than two dozen missing cocooned black holes have been rediscovered, after researchers took a new look at X-ray maps of the sky. All of these singularities had been misclassified as distant galaxies or other types of black holes.
  • All 28 of the objects are supermassive black holes, billions of times the mass of our sun. And all are going through a stage of development where they shroud themselves in a dark bubble of dust and other material. Those cocoons obscure the bright X-rays emitted by hot material swirling around their event horizons, the point of no return for infalling matter, making them seem dimmer than they really are. Models of black hole formation suggest there should be lots of black holes like this across the sky, but until now, scientists hadn't spotted as many as expected. This new research, based on observations of one patch of the southern sky, suggests many of them were hiding in plain sight.

New Physical Paradox Discovered by Russian Scientists: "Ballistic Resonance"

  • Researchers from Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU) discovered and theoretically explained a new physical effect: amplitude of mechanical vibrations can grow without external influence. Additionally, the scientific group offered their explanation on how to eliminate the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou paradox.
  • The scientists of SPbPU explained it using a simple example: to rock the swing, you have to keep pushing it. It is generally believed that it is impossible to achieve oscillatory resonance without constant external influence.
  • However, the scientific group of the Higher School of Theoretical Mechanics, Institute of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics SPbPU discovered a new physical phenomenon of "ballistic resonance," where mechanical oscillations can be excited only due to internal thermal resources of the system.
  • The experimental work of researchers from all around the world demonstrated, that the heat spreads at abnormally high speeds at nano and micro levels in ultrapure crystalline materials. This phenomenon was called ballistic heat conductivity.

IISc Designs Eye Gaze-Controlled Robotic Arm for Speech, Motor Impaired

  • An Indian Institute of Science (IISc) research team designed a robotic arm that can be manipulated by eye movement using a computer interface, to help people with Severe Speech and Motor Impairment (SSMI).
  • According to Bengaluru-based IISc, this interface is non-invasive since it is through a webcam and a computer, unlike other eye gaze-tracking devices that use head-mounted systems.
  • People with SSMI find it difficult to physically operate devices such as a joystick, mouse or trackball, or use speech recognition systems.
  • Eye gaze-controlled computer interfaces can help them perform various tasks on par with their non-disabled peers.
  • To help people with SSMI (a condition caused by disorders like cerebral palsy), a research team at the Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing (CPDM), IISc, worked with young adult students who have SSMI at Vidya Sagar (formerly the Spastics Society of India) in Chennai, an institution for individuals with disabilities.

First Launch of China's Kuaizhou-11 Carrier Rocket Fails

  • The first launch of Kuaizhou-11 (KZ-11), a solid-fuelled carrier rocket, failed after its liftoff from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China. According to reports, KZ-11 failed to reach its intended orbit and the specific reasons behind the failure are currently being analysed and investigated.
  • The launch of the rocket, developed by ExPace Technology Corporation, a subsidiary of China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), was already delayed by three years and ended up in a failure. The low-cost solid-fueled carrier rocket, with a lift-off mass of 70.8 tonnes, was designed to launch low-Earth and Sun-synchronous orbit satellites.
  • The Kuaizhou-11 has a larger diameter and stronger capacity with respect to the other rockets from Kuaizhou series launched previously. It can lift a 1.0-tonne payload to a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 700 kilometres. The three-stage rocket is reportedly based on the DF-21 missile and consists of three solid-fuelled stages.

Astronomers Spot Red Dwarf Star 'AD Leonis' With Massive Solar Flares

  • A team of astronomers in Japan have captured a red dwarf star called "AD Leonis" that is found to have massive flares — one of them was even 20 times larger than the solar flares emitted by our own Sun. The star is notably just 16 light-years away from Earth. However, it was seen with an extreme large flare, termed a "superflare". This is believed to result in whopping magnetic storms that if emitted from our Sun could impact the Earth's technological infrastructure.
  • The team from the Graduate School of Science of Kyoto University captured the AD Leonis star using a 3.8-metre Seimei telescope. The star appears to have temperatures lower than that of our Sun, which results in a high incidence of flares. Moreover, the astronomers detected a superflare on their first night of observations.

Astronomers Discover South Pole Wall

  • Spectacular 3D maps of the universe have revealed one of the biggest cosmic structures ever found, an almost-inconceivable wall stretching 1.4 billion light-years across that contains hundreds of thousands of galaxies.
  • The South Pole Wall, as it has been dubbed, has been hiding in plain sight, remaining undetected until now because large parts of it sit half a billion light-years away behind the bright Milky Way galaxy. The South Pole Wall rivals in size the Sloan Great Wall, the sixth largest cosmic structure discovered. (One light-year is roughly 6 trillion miles, or 9 trillion kilometres, so this "biggest cosmic structure" is mind-bendingly humongous.)
