Eintracht Frankfurt beat Rangers to win UEFA Europa League

  • Eintracht Frankfurt's 42-year wait for a European trophy is over. The German club ended its title drought with a penalty shootout win over Rangers in the Europa League final. Goalkeeper Kevin Trapp came up with a big save at the end of extra time and another in the shootout to help give Frankfurt the 5-4 win on penalties. The game ended 1-1 after regulation and extra time.

Boxer Nikhat Zareen Becomes World Champion, Only Fifth Indian Woman to Achieve Feat

  • Nikhat Zareen, shedding tears of joy, hugged coach Bhaskar Bhatt after earning a 5-0 unanimous decision over Thailand's Jutamas Jitpong to become the world champion in the 52kg division at the World Championships in Istanbul. After her victory, Bhatt lifted Nikhat to his shoulder and she went out of the hall in a blaze of glory, amidst camera flashes and applause from the stands.
  • This glory was well earned for the 25-year-old boxer from Nizamabad in Telangana. She not only won the biggest prize of her start-stop career, but she also truly broke out of the giant shadow of multiple World Championships medallist Mary Kom. Injury, loss of confidence and Boxing Federation of India (BFI) officials' preference for London Olympics bronze medallist Mary Kom had all but stalled Nikhat's career and dreams.
  • Nikhat becomes only the fifth Indian woman boxer to win gold at the World Championships. For the record, Mary Kom has won six gold medals in the tournament. Sarita Devi, Jenny RL and Lekha KC are the only other women pugilists from India who have won gold at the World Championships.

Tata Consultancy Services World 10K Bengaluru: Kipkorir Kimeli (Men's) and Irene Cheptai (Women's...

  • Course records fell by the wayside as Kenyans Nicholas Kipkorir Kimeli and Irene Cheptai emerged victorious in the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) World 10K Bengaluru. Kimeli (27:38s) took six seconds off the elite men's course record set by Geoffrey Kamworor in 2014. In the elite women's event, Irene (30:35s) smashed the mark set by the late Agnes Tirop (31:19s) in 2018. Tadese Worku and Hellen Obiri, who finished second in elite men's and women's categories respectively, also went under the course records.
  • The quick timings were thoroughly commendable, given the less-than-ideal conditions. Heavy rains, which stopped just an hour before the start of the elite runs, left big puddles for the runners to navigate. The start times (7.10 a.m. for women, and 8 a.m. for men) meant that the runners felt the heat, and the humidity only made it tougher.
