Chess prodigy V. Pranav became India's 75th Grandmaster by winning a tournament in Romania.
The Chennai-based Pranav won the Limpedea Open in Baia Mare, Romania to secure his third and final GM norm and attain the Grandmaster title. He finished the tournament with 7 points from nine rounds to wrap the GM norm requirements.
The 15-year-old had obtained his maiden GM norm at the Serbia Open in 2021 and the second in the Vezerkepzo GM round-robin tourney in Budapest, Hungary.
India Beat Bangladesh 5-2 to Lift SAFF Under-20 Football Championship Trophy
India lifted the SAFF U-20 football championship trophy by defeating Bangladesh 5-2 goals in the final at Kalinga stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Four goals from Gurkirat Singh and a lone goal from Himanshu Jhangra ensured Indian Team a worthy comeback in the final match which had gone to extra-time. India won this championship for the second consecutive time.
Vishwanathan Anand Elected FIDE Deputy President
Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand was elected deputy president of FIDE, the sport's world governing body, while incumbent president Arkady Dvorkovich was re-elected for a second term.
Five-time world champion Anand was part of Dvorkovich's team.
Dvorkovich received 157 votes as against 16 by his rival Andrii Baryshpolets while the number of invalid votes was 1 and abstentions stood at 5.
The elections to the world chess body were held during the FIDE Congress alongside the 44th Chess Olympiad.
India Wins Silver after Losing to Australia in 1st Commonwealth Women's Cricket Final
The Indian women's cricket team won the silver medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led met Australia in the gold medal match in Birmingham but went down by 9 runs. Chasing 162 in 20 overs, India had lost openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma early but skipper Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues steadied the ship for the side and chipped in with a 96-run stand for the third wicket.
Javelin Thrower Annu Rani Wins Bronze; First Indian Female to win Medal in the Sport
Annu Rani scripted history as she became the first Indian female javelin thrower to win a medal, a bronze, in the Commonwealth Games.
Rani sent the spear to a distance of 60m in her fourth attempt to finish third.
World champion Kelsey-Lee Barber of Australia stole the gold with a final round throw of 64.43m from compatriot Mackenzie Little (64.27m) who was leading at the end of the penultimate round.
Before Rani, Kashinath Naik and Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra had won a bronze and a gold in the men's javelin throw respectively.
Sakshi Malik, Deepak Punia Win Gold in Wrestling at CWG 2022
The Indian wrestling contingent performed exceptionally. It won six medals which included three gold, one silver and two bronze medals. The Indian women's hockey team though lost controversially in the semi-final against Australia. The Indian team was done in by the time-keeper in the penalty shoot-out as after the first save from Savita Punia, it was decided that the time clock was not running and Australia was given a re-shoot.
Bajrang Punia and Deepak Punia faced no problems at all as they raced their way to the gold in their respective categories of Men's 65 kg and 86 kg freestyle. Sakshi Malik played a tremendous game as she fought back from being 0-4 down to go 4-4 all and then win by pinfall against her Canadian opponent.
Apart from these three gold medals, India also won a silver courtesy of Anshu Malik who put in a great fight in the final against the Nigerian Commonwealth Champion, losing 4-6. Mohit Grewwal and Divya Kakran won bronze medals.

Punjab to Host the Punjab Khed Mela from August 29
With an aim to identify talent, making conducive environment for sports and increasing health awareness, the sports department is going to organise "Khed Mela" in which events of 30 sports will be held in under 14 to 60 years veteran group.
The "Khed Mela" to be held from block to the state level will kick start on the occasion of the National Sports Day on August 29, said Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer after a meeting with all district sports officers.
Three lakh Punjabi athletes are expected to take part in the Sports Mela, according to the Sports Minister.
The victors of the sanctioned sporting events will be given grades in their particular sports, and the state-level winners will also get certificates and monetary awards totaling five crore rupees.

IOC to Consider Including Cricket in 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games
Cricket's much-anticipated inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics received a shot in the arm as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) shortlisted it for a review along with eight other sporting disciplines.
Cricket has only featured once at the 1900 Paris Olympic Games, with Great Britain and hosts France as only participants.
The development came a day after the International Cricket Committee (ICC) was formally invited by both the LA28 and IOC to submit presentation in order to make their case considered.
However, a final decision is expected to be announced ahead of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Mumbai sometime in mid-2023.
CWG: Tejaswin Shankar Bags Bronze in High Jump
Tejaswin Shankar created history with the first-ever medal for India in high jump.
Tejaswin, competing for India for the first time in four years nailed a landing of 2.22m to secure a podium finish. He did not have trouble clearing 2.5m and 2.10m in the opening two jumps. Then 2.19m and 2.22m quite easily on the first try. He though failed to clear 2.25 but clinched the bronze medal after being quicker to jump 2.22m against the fourth-placed athlete. He attempted 2.28m on his last jump but failed.

Commonwealth Games 2022: Murali Sreeshankar Wins Silver in Long Jump
Murali Sreeshankar clinched a silver in the men's long jump to give India its second medal in athletics at the Commonwealth Games 2022. Sreeshankar soared to 8.08m in his fifth attempt to finish second behind Laquan Nairn of Bahamas in a nerve-wracking men's long jump final. Nairn also had the best jump of 8.08m but his second best of 7.98m was better than the 7.84m of Sreeshankar. Jovan van Vuuren (8.06m) of South Africa took the bronze.
Under rules, if two jumpers are tied on the same distance, the one who has a better second-best effort will be ranked ahead.
CWG 2022: Sudhir Wins Gold in Men's Heavyweight Para Power Lifting
India's Sudhir claimed the gold medal in men's heavyweight para power lifting event at the Commonwealth Games.
Sudhir, an Asian Para Games bronze medallist, lifted 208kg in his first attempt before increasing it to 212kg in his second effort to gather 134.5 points and break the Games record.
Sudhir, who has an impairment due to the effects of polio, thus opened India's para sports medal account in the ongoing CWG.
Ikechukwu Christian Obichukwu won the silver with 133.6 points, while Micky Yule bagged the bronze with 130.9 points.

Saurav Ghosal Wins Historic Bronze for India in CWG Squash
Breaking a long-standing jinx, Saurav Ghosal claimed India's first ever singles medal in squash, a bronze, at the Commonwealth Games.
World No.15 Ghosal dominated the contest against England's James Willstrop from beginning to end, winning 11-6 11-1 11-4 in the bronze play-off.
It is Ghosal's second CWG medal, having won a mixed doubles silver with Dipika Pallikal in the 2018 Gold Coast edition.
Ghosal had lost the men's singles semi-final 3-0 (11-9 11-4 11-1) to New Zealand's Paul Coll.
