Men's Hockey World Cup Starts in Odisha

  • Men's Hockey World Cup, 2023 got underway evening with a spectacular opening ceremony at the picturesque Barabati Stadium in Cuttack that was witnessed by thousands of hockey lovers in attendance from across the country and abroad.
  • Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, International Hockey Federation president Tayyab Ikram and Hockey India chairman Dilip Tirkey were present at the glittering ceremony and welcomed members of all the 16 participating teams.
  • India vs Spain Group D match of the 2023 Men's Hockey World Cup was played at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela on January 13, 2023.

Kerala Breaks Guinness Record for Goals Scored

  • Kerala kicked itself into the Guinness Book of World Records by taking 4,500 penalty kicks in 12 hours. The Department of Sports and Youth Affairs made it possible for the football-crazy state to set the Guinness record at a Dream Goal penalty shootout organised at Payyanad Football Stadium at Manjeri.
  • The excitement was palpable at the stadium throughout the day as hundreds of footballers, students, teachers and football lovers queued up to take the penalty kicks. Many missed, but some netted with impeccable perfection.
  • The organisers arranged students from different schools and colleges across Malappuram district and they were set in batches of 50. Each batch was given 50 balls. Under the surveillance of the Guinness officials, the participants stood in queue after registering themselves by producing their Aadhaar cards.

Herbalife Nutrition India Signs Smriti Mandhana as Sponsored Sports Athlete

  • Nutrition company Herbalife Nutrition India Private Limited partnered with international women's cricketer, Smriti Mandhana as a 'nutrition sponsor'. She had an incredible journey, taking the cricket world by storm with her batting performances. Currently, she is the vice captain of the Indian women's national cricket team. Herbalife Nutrition has signed over 100 sponsorship deals with varied world-class athletes, teams and events. Multiple renowned Indian athletes like Virat Kohli, Mary Kom, Lakshya Sen, and Manika Batra have partnered up with Herbalife Nutrition.
  • Mandhana's performance on the field made her the first Indian women cricketer to be recognized as the ICC Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year in 2018.
  • The same year saw her winning the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Award.

Ashleigh Gardner and Harry Brook Win ICC Players of the Month Award for December

  • Australia allrounder Ashleigh Gardner and England's Harry Brook won the ICC Player of the Month Awards for December following their sparkling show at the international level. While Gardner produced an excellent all-round show during a bilateral T20I series against India, Brook continued his rise with an eye-catching show in the Pakistan Test series.
  • Gardner scored 115 runs at an impressive strike rate of 166.66 and also took seven wickets during a 4-1 T20I series win over India.
  • Brook had a remarkable series in Pakistan as he peeled off three centuries in as many Tests to help England complete a historic 3-0 clean sweep.

Swastika Ghosh Qualifies for World Table Tennis Championship

  • Swastika Ghosh became the fourth Indian to qualify for the World Table Tennis Championship after beating Chinese Taipei's Liu Hsing-Yin to be among the 28 women singles qualifiers from the Asian Continental Stage of 2023 WTTC final in Doha.
  • Swastika joins Sreeja Akula, Manika Batra and Sharath Kamal, who made it by finishing among the top-16 from the continent.
  • The World Championship will be played in Durban.

Virat Kohli Equals Tendulkar's Record of most Hundreds at Home

  • Indian Cricketer, Virat Kohli recorded the first century by an Indian in 2023 against Sri Lanka in the first One-Day International at the Baraspara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. He made 113 off 87 balls. With his 45th ODI ton he equalled Sachin Tendulkar's record for most centuries at home in ODI cricket. While Tendulkar had 20 centuries in 160 innings at home, Kohli smashed his 20 ton in his 99th innings at home.

Anahat Singh Wins Girls U-15 Squash Title at 2023 British Junior Open

  • Indian squash prodigy Anahat Singh clinched the girls Under-15 squash title at the most prestigious British Junior Open tournament in Birmingham.
  • She defeated Sohaila Hazem of Egypt, 3-1 in the final. Despite the first set being closely contested, she took the lead and won the tournament.
  • The British Junior Open is held in January every year in the UK where all the best players from all over the world compete to win the coveted title. This year it was held after a Covid-induced gap of two years from January 4 to 8.

Novak Djokovic Saves Championship Point to Beat Korda to Adelaide Title

  • Novak Djokovic defeated America's Sebastian Korda in a nerve-wracking final to win the Adelaide International men's singles title. The 21-time Grand Slam winner won the match 6-7 (8-10), 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 in three hours and nine minutes.
  • After losing the first set, Djokovic faced a championship point with the score-line reading 5-6 in favour of Korda. However, once the Serbian took the match in the tie-breaker, there was no stopping him.
  • Djokovic also equalled Rafael Nadal's tally of 92 ATP singles titles in the Open Era. Nadal and Djokovic are joint-fourth in the list after Jimmy Connors (109), Roger Federer (103) and Ivan Lendl (94).

Chetan Sharma Reappointed as Chairman of BCCI's selection committee

  • Chetan Sharma was reappointed as the Chairman of the senior selection committee, exactly two months after his entire panel was disbanded by the BCCI for the Indian team's semi-final exit in the T20 World Cup. Salil Ankola, Shiv Sunar Das, Subroto Banerjee and Sridharan Sharath are new members of the selection committee. The new committee was picked by the Cricket Advisory Committee comprising Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape and Sulakshana Naik. The committee further recommended Chetan Sharma for the role of Chairman of the senior men's selection committee.
