Rene Zondag, PBI President Inaugurates Tennis Center in Pune

  • Peter Burwash International (PBI), one of the top tennis instruction programmes, has partnered with the Ileseum Club in Bavdhan, Pune, opened a second training facility in India.
  • The first PBI centre at the Padukone-Dravid Centre in Bengaluru is successfully guiding some of the prominent players like Sahaja Yamalapalli, Shrivalli Bhamidipaty and Rishi Reddy, through its Director Cesar Morales. The high performance centre has over 200 players.
  • The second centre in Pune, which is set to expand further, including to other cities like Mumbai, Solapur and Chennai, will have Milos Milunovic as its technical director.

Shot Putter Toor Wins Gold in Asian Indoor Championships

  • India's national record holder in the men's outdoor shot put clinched the gold medal with a personal indoor best of 19.49 m at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023, held in Astana, Kazakhstan. Tajinderpal Singh Toor fouled on his first attempt but hurled the winning throws of 19.49 m throw in his third and fifth attempts to claim his first gold medal at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships.
  • The Asian Games gold medallist in 2018 and the outdoor Asian champion in 2019, Toor earlier won a silver medal at the last edition of the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Tehran in 2018 with a 19.18 m throw.

Ravichandran Ashwin Becomes the Fastest Indian to Pick up 450 Test Wickets

  • India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin reached his 450th Test wicket in the first Test match of the four-match India vs Australia Test series. Ashwin overtook Kumble to become the fastest India bowler to reach this feat, picking up the 450th wicket on his 89th Test match.
  • The Indian off-spinner is now the second-fastest bowler in the world to reach 450th Test wicket, only behind Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan, who completed the feat in his 80th Test match.

BCCI Shifts Third India-Australia Test from Dharamsala to Indore

  • The third Test between India and Australia scheduled to be played from March 1-5 was shifted from Dharamsala to Indore.
  • The match was shifted after BCCI curator Taposh Chatterjee's report deemed the re-laid outfield as unfit for an international match.

Jean-Eric Vergne Wins Formula E in Hyderabad

  • The much-awaited Formula E made a grand debut in India with its all-electric car race on the street circuit. After an action-packed qualifying session and the 32-lap final race, Jean-Eric Vergne of team DS PENSKE automobiles emerged the winner for the 2023 Greenko Hyderabad E-Prix Round 4.
  • The winning trophy was presented by Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur. Nick Cassidy (Envision Racing) and Antonio Felix da Costa (TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team) settled for second and third places, respectively.

National Ranking Archery Tournament in Delhi

  • Top Indian archers like Abhishek Verma, Atanu Das and Vennam Jyothi Surekha were seen in action in the National Ranking Archery Tournament held at the DDA Yamuna Sports Complex in Delhi.
  • The preliminary elimination rounds of the event were held on February 10 and the final rounds of the compound and recurve events were staged on February 11 and 12.
  • The NTPC National Ranking Archery Tournament, organised by the Delhi Archery Association under the aegis of the Archery Association of India (AAI), featured senior, junior and sub-junior (cadet) recurve and compound competitions for both men and women.
  • The total prize purse of the tournament was Rs. 50 lakh, double the amount given in the last edition.

Women's Senior National Hockey Championship from Feb 15

  • Twenty-nine teams will take part in the Hockey India Senior Women National Championship to be held in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh from February 15, which will kick-start the domestic season.
  • Odisha had won the title last year (2022) after defeating Karnataka 2-0 in the final.

Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay Submit Joint 2030 World Cup Bid

  • Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay officially submitted a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup, calling for the tournament to return "where football was born" 100 years after the first World Cup was held in Montevideo.
  • During a ceremony at the Argentine Football Association (AFA), officials of the four countries were joined by Alejandro Dominguez, president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), who said that he hopes FIFA can show a "gesture of greatness" toward the region and allow it to organise the tournament.

Gary Ballance Becomes Second Player in Test History to Set Rare Record

  • Gary Ballance, who represented England across all three formats, scored a superb century for Zimbabwe on the fourth day of the first Test against West Indies in Bulawayo. Gary's outstanding 137 means he is just the second player in the history of the game to have scored Test centuries for two different countries, following in the footsteps of former Australia and South Africa international Kepler Wessels. He hit four Test hundreds for Australia and two for South Africa.

Paris Olympics: Nordic Nations Oppose Russian, Belarusian Athletes' Participation

  • The Nordic Olympic Committees wrote to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to reiterate their opposition to Russian and Belarusian athletes being allowed to take part in international sports.
  • The IOC said last month that athletes from Russia and Belarus might be allowed to earn slots for the Olympic Games in Paris next year through Asian qualifying.
  • Athletes from Russia and neighbouring Belarus, which aided Moscow's invasion of Ukraine a year ago, have been banned from many international competitions since, and organisers of the Paris 2024 Olympics said they will abide by the IOC's decision on who is allowed to take part in the Games.

Second ICC WTC Final to be Played from June 7-11 at The Oval, England

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that the second edition of the ICC World Test Championship Final will be played between June 7-11, 2023 at the Oval in London, England.
  • The Oval has hosted over 100 Test matches in its rich history, and in June will welcome the top two Test sides in the ICC World Test Championship standings, which will compete for the ICC World Test Championship Mace following two years of hard-fought competition.
  • The ICC World Test Championship final is the pinnacle event in the Test calendar and is a week-long celebration of the longest format of the game. Termed as the "Ultimate Test" by the ICC, the final is the culmination of two years of intense competition in the cycle spanning 61 Test matches over 24 series played till date.

Pakistan Wicketkeeper-Batter Kamran Akmal Retires from All Forms of Cricket

  • Veteran Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Prior to the 2023 edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Akmal was earlier named as the batting consultant for the Peshawar Zalmi, led by Babar Azam, for the upcoming edition of the PSL. Akmal is keener on taking up managerial roles with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
  • Akmal made his debut for Pakistan back in 2002 and went on to play until 2017. In 53 Tests, 157 ODIs and 58 T20Is, the right-handed batter scored 2648, 3236 and 987 runs respectively, with the help of 11 hundreds and 27 fifties. He last donned the national colours in an ODI against the West Indies back in April 2017 at the Providence Stadium in Guyana.

LeBron James Becomes NBA's All-time Leading Scorer

  • LeBron James became the all-time leading scorer in the National Basketball Association (NBA), surpassing a record held by the great Kareem Abdul Jabbar since 1984. He pushed his career total to 38,388 points and broke the record that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar held for nearly four decades. He has won four NBA titles, competing in a total of 10 NBA finals. He has a career average of 27.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 7.3 assists, having played 1409 games over a 20-year-long career that started in 2003. This season LeBron defied age and expectations, averaging 30/8.5/7.1 for the Los Angeles Lakers.
  • While Abdul-Jabbar took 1,560 games to record his total, James set his record in just over 1,400 appearances.
