Maharashtra Declares 'Dahi Handi' an Official Sport

  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that the popular entertainment event of "Dahi Handi" would be officially recognised under the state's sports category.
  • Shinde said that Maharashtra would introduce the discipline "Pro Dahi Handi" and "Govindas" who participated in the tournament would get jobs under the sport Maharashtras quota.
  • Govindas would be provided with an insurance cover of Rs. 10 lakh.

Manisha Kalyan Becomes 1st Indian to Play in UEFA Women's Champions League

  • Young striker Manisha Kalyan became the first Indian footballer to play at the UEFA Women's Champions League when she made her debut for Apollon Ladies FC in the European Club competition in Engomi, Cyprus.
  • Kalyan replaced Cyprus' Marilena Georgiou in the 60th minute at the Makareio Stadium, as Apollon Ladies FC beat Latvian top flight club SFK Riga 3-0 in their UWCL opener.
  • Manisha had become as the fourth Indian woman footballer to sign for an overseas club when she landed a multi-year contract with Cypriot top division winners Apollon Ladies.

Para World Cup: Rahul Shoots Down Gold

  • Rahul Jakhar held his nerves to emerge victorious in a shoot-off as India opened their campaign at the World Shooting Para Sport World Cup on a resounding note by clinching three medals.
  • Jakhar, who qualified in the second spot, held off a determined Kim Jungam in the shoot-off to win the P3 mixed 25m pistol SH1 final. Trailing Jungam throughout the final, the 36-year-old Indian kept his calm to equal the scores 20-all in the last series of the elimination round.
  • Paralympics champion Avani Lekhara won silver in the R2 women's 10m air riflestanding SH1 event.

Bengaluru to Host FIBA U-18 Women's Asian Basketball Championship

  • The International Basketball Federation FIBA is scheduled to host the FIBA U-18 Women's Asian Championship at Sree Kanteerva and Koramangala Indoor stadiums in Bengaluru from September 5 to 11. As many as 16 countries would participate in the event.
  • The championship will be in two divisions -- A and B. The countries in Division A are: China, Indonesia, India, Japan, Korea, Chinese, Taipei, Australia and New Zealand. In Division B are: Hong Kong, Jordan, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Philippines, Samoa and Thailand.
  • Division A will be held at Kanteerva Indoor Stadium and Division B at Koramangala Indoor Stadium. The first four teams from the championship will qualify for the FIBA U-19 Women's World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in Madrid, Spain, in July 2023.

Ireland All-Rounder Kevin O'Brien Announces Retirement from International Cricket

  • Ireland all-rounder Kevin O'Brien announced his retirement from international cricket after falling out of contention for this year's T20 World Cup in Australia. O'Brien played three Tests, 153 one-day internationals and 110 T20 internationals during a 16-year international career and had spells with a number of English county clubs and T20 franchise sides around the world.
  • The 38-year-old famously blasted the Irish to victory over England in a 2011 World Cup group match in India with a 50-ball century—still the tournament's quickest. The Dubliner scored 9,048 runs in total for Ireland, including the country's first Test hundred, a second-innings knock of 118 against Pakistan in 2018, and took 276 wickets.

Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia from November 16-25, 2022

  • Malaysia's premier men's hockey tournament, the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2022 will be held from November 16 to 25 in Ipoh. The tournament is making a return after a two-year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. World No. 1 Australia, fifth-ranked Germany, India, New Zealand, and Canada have been invited to the tournament. All matches will be played at the Azlan Shah Stadium in the city of Ipoh in Malaysia, which is the permanent venue of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.
  • Last time the Azlan Shah tournament was held in 2019 which was won by South Korea beating India in the final, which was there 3rd title.
  • The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup has been an annual feature in the FIH calendar since 1998, although it initially started life in 1983 as a biennial event. The event is named after legendary hockey fan and former FIH Executive Board Member HRH Sultan Azlan Shah. The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup has been part of the International Hockey Federation's (FIH) calendar every year since 2003.

Asia's Oldest Football Tournament - Durand Cup Begins

  • Durand Cup began. The 131st edition of Asia's oldest football tournament the Durand Cup kicked off. The inaugural match was held at the Khuman Lampak Stadium in Imphal.
  • West Bengal, Assam, and Manipur are hosting the Durand Cup 2022.
  • Out of 20 teams, 11 teams will be from various clubs that play Indian Super League, five teams from I-league, and four teams from Armed Forces.
  • The former Foreign Secretary of British India, Mortimer Durand founded the Durand Cup in 1888. The Durand Cup was initially played only by the Armed services but in later years, the game was officially made open for the Professional Football Clubs. The Durand Cup is annually organized by the Durand Cup Football Tournament in association with the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The winner of the tournament is facilitated with three trophies, the Durand Cup, the President's Cup, and the Shimla Trophy.

Delhi High Court Appoints Committee to Run IOA

  • The Delhi High Court appointed a three-member Committee of Administrators (CoA) to run the day-to-day affairs of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
  • Saying that "compliance with the Sports Code is non-negotiable", Justice Najmi Waziri and Justice Manmohan gave the temporary reins of the IOA to Justice (retired) Anil R. Dave, former Chief Election Commissioner S. Y. Quraishi and former external affairs secretary Vikas Swarup.
  • The CoA has been entrusted to prepare the IOA's new constitution as per the Sports Code and the court rulings, and prepare the electoral roll in order to hold fresh elections. The CoA would be assisted by three sportspersons — former shooter Abhinav Bindra, former long jumper Anju Bobby George and archer L. Bombayla Devi.

Himachal Girl Set to Represent India in World Racketlon Championship

  • Himachal girl Dhritih Kandpal, daughter of Lt Col Divik Kandpal from Nahan in Sirmaur district, has made the state proud. She has been selected to represent India in Juniors and Seniors category in World Racketlon Championship scheduled in Vienna and Graz in Austria from August 19 to August 29, 2022.
  • Dhritih is No 1 ranked player in Gujarat in Women category and also a winner of the Gujarat State Squash Championship in Under-15 category as well as Women category in 2021.
