Multi-terabit Undersea Cable to Connect Maldives with India and Singapore

  • Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. (Jio) will land the next generation multi-terabit undersea cable in Maldives to connect the south Asian country with India and Singapore. According to Jio, the new India-Asia-Xpress (IAX) undersea cable in Hulhumale, Maldives will provide more than 200Tb per second of capacity at speed of 100 GB per second, over 16,000 km.
  • IAX will not only connect Maldives to the world's content hubs, but it will also support the explosive growth in data demand expected from the new initiatives being launched by the government of Maldives.
  • The IAX system originates in Mumbai in the west and connects to Singapore, with branches including additional landings in India, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Mysterious New Substance Possibly Discovered Inside Earth's Core

  • According to a new study, Earth's inner core may be filled with a weird substance that is neither solid nor liquid.
  • For more than half a century, scientists believed that Earth's deepest recesses consist of a molten outer core surrounding a densely compressed ball of solid iron alloy. But new research offers a rare insight into the inner structure of the planet — and it's far weirder than previously thought.

IIT Roorkee Launches KISAN Mobile to Send Agricultural Advises

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) launched a mobile app named 'KISAN' for the farmers. Through this app, agro-meteorological advisory services will be provided to the farmers.
  • A farmer's awareness program was organized by IIT Roorkee under the Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa (GKMS) project. Farmers from Dehradun, Haridwar, and Pauri Garhwal districts took part in this program.
  • The participating farmers were taught about the Agromet Advisory Services which is jointly provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and AMFU Roorkee.
  • Agromet Advisory Services are already being provided twice a week to the farmers of six blocks of Haridwar. Through this KISAN app, the bulletins can be accessed via mobile phone.
  • One unique feature of this app is that advisory bulletin and weather forecasts will be displayed only for that particular block that has been selected by the farmers.

DRDO Successfully Tests Quantum Key Distribution Tech between 2 Cities

  • A joint team of scientists from Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, for the first time in the country successfully demonstrated Quantum Key Distribution link between Prayagraj and Vindhyachal in Uttar Pradesh, a distance of more than 100 km.
  • Quantum key distribution is a secure communication method which implements a cryptographic protocol involving components of quantum mechanics. It enables two parties to produce a shared random secret key known only to them, which can then be used to encrypt and decrypt messages.

SpaceX Launches 46 Starlink Satellites, Lands Falcon 9 Rocket for 100th Time

  • SpaceX launched nearly four dozen satellites and landed the returning rocket Monday (Feb. 21) on a mission that tied the company's booster-reuse record.
  • A two-stage Falcon 9 rocket topped with 46 of SpaceX's Starlink broadband spacecraft lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
  • After liftoff, the Falcon 9's first stage came back down to Earth for a vertical touchdown on SpaceX's droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas, which was stationed in the Atlantic Ocean a few hundred miles off the Florida coast. It was the 100th Falcon 9 rocket landing for SpaceX and the company's 107th landing overall.

Sun-Watching Space Observatories Spot Giant Solar Eruption

  • Astronomers using the ESA/NASA Solar Orbiter and the NASA/ESA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft captured the largest solar prominence eruption ever observed in a single image together with the full solar disk.
  • Solar prominences are large structures of tangled magnetic field lines that keep dense concentrations of solar plasma suspended above the Sun's surface, sometimes taking the form of arching loops.
  • This latest solar prominence eruption occurred in February 2022, and extended millions of km into space.
  • The eruption was observed by the Full Sun Imager (FSI) of the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) onboard the ESA/NASA Solar Orbiter.

Assam First State to Launch Mobile App for Navigation on Rivers at Night

  • The first night navigation mobile application in rivers in the country was launched for ferries plying on Brahmaputra River.
  • The inaugural night journey of an Inland Water Transport ferry fitted with the system sailed between Guwahati and North Guwahati and completed the return journey in about an hour.
  • Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ceremonially launched the system during the day. The night navigation mobile application was developed by the transport department in association with K. Raju, the principal scientist of IIT Madras and will survey the draft of the rivers.

Amit Shah Launches 'Shastra App' and 'Smart Card Arms License' of Delhi Police

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah has launched the 'Smart Card Arms License' and 'Shastra App' of the Delhi Police, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Delhi Police. In order to provide techno-friendly digital services to the citizens of the national capital. According to Delhi Police, the smart card, with inherent security features, is easy to carry and handle. The card will be printed in-house after verification of data of the arms license holders.
  • About the Smart Card Arms License:
  • The Delhi Police Licensing Unit has introduced 'Smart Card Arms License', to replace the existing bulky arms license booklet. With this Delhi Police has become the first police force in the country to introduce such a smart card service.
  • The Smart Card Arms License is easy to carry with inherent security features. It will be printed in the house after verification of data of arms license holders.
  • The card is also integrated with the 'e-Beat book' of Delhi Police through the 'Shastra mobile app' for effective policing.
  • The Shastra app will help beat officers in identifying the credentials of arms license holders anytime during day-to-day random checking.
