Islamabad's 24th Attempt to Give Provincial Status to PoK Fails
Amid stiff opposition from the people, the Pakistan government withdrew the 15th Constitutional Amendment Bill to the Interim Constitution of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), thus failing in its 24th attempt to provide provincial status to PoK.
The introduction of the Bill led to massive protests and public meetings in all the ten districts of Pakistan-occupied region Protestors strongly objected to the Pakistan government's plan to bring in the 15th amendment to fix the constitutional status of the region.
India's Lt Gen Subramanian Takes Command of United Nation's Largest Peacekeeping Operation
Lieutenant General Mohan Subramanian of India took over the command of the UN`s peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, the largest of its 13 operations. "It is a privilege to have the opportunity to serve for sustainable peace in the world's youngest country, South Sudan, by leading diverse military peacekeepers in the world's largest peacekeeping mission," he said.
The operation, known as UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has 13,254 troops among its 17,982 personnel, of whom, 2,385 troops and 30 police personnel are from India. He was given a guard of honour by troops from India, China, Nepal, Bangladesh, Rwanda and Ethiopia as he succeeded another Indian, Lt Gen. Shailesh Tinaikar.
He took charge of Major Gen. Main Ullah Chowdhury of Bangladesh, who was the interim commander. This is Subramanian`s second tour with the UN, having served in Sierra Leone as a staff officer with the mission in 2000.

India-Bangladesh Joint River Commission Meeting Held in Delhi
The 38th Meeting of Ministerial level Joint Rivers Commission, JRC, of India and Bangladesh was held in New Delhi. The two sides finalised the text of MoU on 'Interim Water Sharing of Kushiyara River'. Both sides also welcomed finalisation of the design and location of the water intake point on the Feni River to meet the drinking water needs of Sabroom town in Tripura, as per the October 2019 India -Bangladesh MoU on the subject.
The Indian delegation was led by Union Minister for Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and the Bangladesh delegation was led by State Minister for Water Resources Zaheed Farooque. The meeting assumes significance as it was held after a long gap of 12 years, though the technical interactions under the framework of JRC have continued in the intervening period. India and Bangladesh share 54 rivers, of which seven rivers have been identified earlier for developing framework of water sharing agreements on priority.
During the meeting, it was agreed to widen the area of ongoing cooperation by including eight more rivers for data exchange. The matter will be further discussed at the Technical Level Committee of JRC. The Joint Rivers Commission of India and Bangladesh was constituted in the year 1972.
K. Subramaniam: Executive Director (India) at IMF

His term will begin from November and will continue for a period of three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier, by curtailing the tenure of eminent economist Surjit S. Bhalla as ED (India), IMF up to 31 October 2022.
Subramanian holds an MBA and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in financial economics from University of Chicago Booth School of Business. His PhD was completed under the supervision of former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan.
Serbian President Nominates Ana Brnabic to Serve as PM Once again
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic nominated Ana Brnabic to serve another term as Prime Minister and to lead a new government through a time of war in Europe, global energy and inflation crises and tensions with Kosovo.
The nomination came more than five months after their party, the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), won the most votes in a national election. The formal announcement of results was delayed by voting irregularities at one polling station, preventing parliament from being convened.

India in Talks with Russia Over LNG Supply Resumption
India is in talks with Russia to resume gas supplies under the long-term import deal between Gazprom and GAIL (India) Ltd., company's chairman said at an annual shareholder meeting on Friday.
GAIL, India's largest gas distributor and operator of pipelines, has not received the agreed imports since May and has had to cut supplies to clients as a result.
"There are some immediate issues which we are trying to tackle both at the company level and also at G2G (government to government) level," said GAIL Chairman Manoj Jain, adding that supplies under the Gazprom deal have been hit by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Volumes under the deal were about a fifth of GAIL's overall overseas gas portfolio of 14 million tonnes a year, including supplies from the United States, Qatar and Australia, Mr. Jain said.

S. Jaishankar Embarks on A 3-Nation Visit to South American Continent
Looking forward to augmenting relationships with all nations of the Latin American Region, External Affairs minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has embarked on a three-nation visit.
During the Minister's meeting with top leaderships of these three countries as well as his counterpart, focus will be on food and energy security, defence and security, space, IT, and aerospace.
This is the minister's first visit to the South American Region when he travels to Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina starting August 22-27.
The minister, accompanied by senior officials, will have bilateral engagements with his counterparts and will also call on the top leadership in all the three countries.
