Old Trading Network Uncovered

  • Archaeologists have uncovered a vast trading network which operated in Vietnam from around 4,500 years ago up until around 3,000 years ago.
  • The discovery significantly changes what is known about early Vietnamese culture.
  • A study by researchers shows a number of settlements along the Mekong Delta region of Southern Vietnam were part of a sophisticated scheme where large volumes of items were manufactured and circulated over hundreds of kilometres.

East Antarctic Ice Sheet

  • A new study validates that the central core of the East Antarctic ice sheet should remain stable even if the West Antarctic ice sheet melts.
  • According to Kathy Licht, if the East Antarctic ice sheet, which is 10 times larger than the western ice sheet, melted completely, it would cause sea levels worldwide to rise almost 200 feet.

Largest Volcanic Region on Earth

  • Scientists have uncovered the largest volcanic region on Earth, consisting of almost 100 volcanoes two kilometres below the surface of the vast Antarctic ice sheet.
  • The newly discovered volcanoes range in height from 100 to 3,850 metres. All of them are covered in thick layers of ice.
  • These active peaks are concentrated in a region known as the west Antarctic rift system, which stretches 3,500 km from Antarctica's Ross Ice Shelf to the Antarctic Peninsula.

Harsher Winters in Europe

  • Researchers have warned that Arctic ice loss could lead to harsher winters and stormier weather in Europe because of its impact on Atlantic Ocean currents.
  • The research found that a decline in sea ice cover caused by global warming could weaken the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) -- a large-scale ocean circulation system that affects climate.
  • AMOC is responsible for transporting heat from low to high latitudes.

Indian Ocean Level

  • Recent studies by Indian scientists had revealed that the trend of sea level rise in the north Indian Ocean is slightly higher than the global estimate of 3.2 mm per year.
  • The possibility of sea level rise in the next ten years is about 3.2 cm in the north Indian Ocean, if the sea level acceleration remains similar.
  • Over the period of 100 years, between 1901 to 2010, the global mean sea level had risen by 19 cms or 0.19 meters.
