Yemen Appoints Finance Minister Salem Bin Braik as New Prime Minister
Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) appointed Salem Saleh Bin Braik, the country's long-serving Finance Minister, as the new Prime Minister in May 2025. This decision followed the sudden resignation of Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, who cited constitutional limitations and a lack of authority to implement key reforms as reasons for stepping down.
The appointment of Salem Bin Braik as the new Prime Minister marks a crucial leadership change in a country ravaged by civil war and economic collapse.
Salem Saleh Bin Braik has been Yemen's Finance Minister since 2019.
Before that, he served as Vice Finance Minister and held multiple administrative roles.

German conservative leader Friedrich Merz failed to secure enough parliamentary votes to become chancellor, throwing politics in Europe's largest economy into disarray as it seeks to emerge from recession and stem far-right extremism.
Merz who led his conservatives to a federal election victory in February and signed a coalition deal with the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD), won just 310 votes in the Lower House, the Bundestag, six short of an absolute majority.
FMCG Major Marico Extends CEO Saugata Gupta's Tenure for Two Years
The Board of Directors of home-grown FMCG major Marico approved the reappointment of Saugata Gupta as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer for a further period of two years, from April 1, 2026 till March 31, 2028.
Gupta had joined Marico, which owns popular brands including Saffola, Parachutte and Livon, in 2004 as the Head of Marketing.
He was elevated as CEO of India business in 2007.
Since 2014, Gupta has been continuing as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the company.
Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Announces Key Leadership Appointments
Skoda Auto Volkswagen India (SAVWIPL) announced key leadership changes, appointing Ashish Gupta as Brand Director of Skoda India and Nitin Kohli as Brand Director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars.
Ashish Gupta succeeded Petr Janeba, who returns to Skoda Auto in the Czech Republic. Gupta has over 20 years of experience in the automotive sector, including more than 12 years within the Volkswagen Group and five years leading the Volkswagen brand in India.
Nitin Kohli has 25 years of experience in the automotive sector — including over a decade at SAVWIPL.
India Breaks Records in Mineral (Mining) Production in FY 2024-25
India's mining and non-ferrous metal sectors achieved record-breaking production levels in FY 2024-25, building upon the momentum of the previous year. According to provisional data released by the Ministry of Mines, key minerals such as iron ore, manganese ore, and bauxite, as well as non-ferrous metals like aluminium and copper, registered significant year-on-year growth. This surge is driven by strong demand from core sectors including steel, construction, infrastructure, and automotive manufacturing.
The production reached 289 million metric tonnes (MMT) with a 4.3% increase over 277 MMT in FY 2023-24.
FC Goa defeated Jamshedpur FC with a 3-0 win and clinched the 2025 Kalinga Super Cup title at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

China Clinches 14th Sudirman Cup Title
China extended its supremacy in world badminton by clinching the Sudirman Cup 2025, defeating South Korea 3-1 in the final held in Xiamen, China.
The Sudirman Cup is the World Mixed Team Badminton Championship, organised by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
China has now won 14 out of the 18 editions, showcasing its sustained excellence.
The Haryana Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, approved a new excise policy that brings a significant increase in liquor duties and introduces stricter rules for the sale, location, and promotion of alcohol across the state.
The policy, aimed at boosting revenue and promoting responsible alcohol distribution, is expected to push excise collections beyond Rs. 12,000 crore.
Unlike previous policies, which operated from June to May, the new excise policy will now follow the financial year. It will remain in effect until March 31, 2027. This change brings the policy cycle in line with the government's financial planning system.

India-Maldives Strengthen Defence Ties through HADR Exercise
In a move showcasing India's deepening regional defence ties and commitment to humanitarian collaboration, INS Sharda reached the Maldives' Maafilaafushi Atoll on May 4, 2025, and is participating in a joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) exercise. This bilateral exercise with the Maldives' National Defence Force (MNDF) runs until May 10 and underscores India's strategic vision for maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
The activities included in the exercise are: joint drills and rescue simulations, medical aid provision and team mobilisation, and community engagement and capacity building.
Operation Sindoor: India Strikes Back in Pakistan and PoK
In a significant military development, the Indian Armed Forces on Wednesday launched 'Operation Sindoor', a series of precision strikes on terrorist camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The operation comes in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen, triggering widespread outrage and demands for decisive action.
According to a formal release by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the strikes targeted a total of nine locations believed to house active terrorist infrastructure involved in planning and executing attacks against India.

Indian Institute of Foreign Trade Receives Approval to Establish Off-Campus Centre at GIFT City, Gujarat
The Ministry of Education, Government of India, approved the establishment of an off-campus centre of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), New Delhi, at GIFT City, Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The centre will be set up in accordance with the UGC (Institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2023.
The approval under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, came after IIFT's successful compliance with the conditions laid out in the Letter of Intent (LoI) issued in January 2025. These included submission of a development roadmap to establish a multidisciplinary institution with over 1,000 students, availability of qualified faculty, detailed academic programmes, plans for a permanent campus, and creation of a state-of-the-art library.
