Saudi Arabia to Host 2027 Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup

  • Saudi Arabia was declared the host of the 2027 Asian Cup by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) at the 33rd AFC Congress.
  • The AFC's executive committee had earlier shortlisted bids from India and Saudi Arabia in October 2022 after Qatar pulled out of the process following their successful bid to host the 2023 edition in place of original hosts China.
  • Iran, Qatar and Uzbekistan were the other countries to have initially bid for the hosting rights.
  • But the Indian federation withdrew its bid in December 2022, effectively sealing the tournament for the Saudis.

Babita Phogat Joins Oversight Committee Panel Formed against WFI

  • Babita Phogat, a former wrestler, joined the oversight committee established to look into the claims made against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). The Oversight Committee is also looking into claims of sexual misbehaviour, harassment, and/or intimidation, as well as financial and organisational irregularities made by well-known athletes.
  • The committee was established during the IOA's emergency Executive Council meeting earlier this month, which was also attended by IOA President P. T. Usha, joint secretary Kalyan Chaubey, and people like Yogeshwar and Abhinav Bindra.
  • Babita Phogat is the sixth member of the Oversight Committee, which is led by M. C. Mary Kom, Chairperson of the Athletes Commission and recipient of the Khel Ratna Award.

Sports Ministry Gets 700 crore-plus Boost in Union Budget 2023

  • In a year when the Indian athletes will compete at the Asian Games and prepare for 2024 Paris Olympics, the Sports Ministry has got a fillip with the government allocating Rs. 3,397.32 crore, an increase of Rs. 723.97 crore.
  • The amount is more than the revised budget of the previous financial year (2022-23) when the ministry received Rs. 2,673.35 crore, as against the actual allocation of Rs. 3,062.60 crore.

India Record its Biggest Win in T20Is after Beating New Zealand by 168 Runs

  • India registered its biggest win in T20Is by a margin of runs after beating New Zealand by 168 runs in the third and final T20I at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
  • India's previous biggest win was against Ireland by a margin of 143 runs at The Village in Dublin back in June 2018. The win against the Kiwis was also India's biggest win in T20Is at home. It was also the third time that India won a T20I by a margin of above 100.

Anish Giri Wins Tata Steel Masters 2023

  • Dutch player Anish Giri, five times the runner-up in Wijk aan Zee, won the 85th edition of Tata Steel Masters after pouncing on a blunder by Richard Rapport while Jorden van Foreest took down long-term leader Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Magnus Carlsen beat Arjun Erigaisi on demand to catch Nodirbek in a tie for 2nd place, while Wesley So finished 4th.
  • The Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2023 was the 85th edition of the annual chess tournament held in Wijk aan Zee. It was held from 13 January to 29 January 2023. The field of 14 players in the Masters section included the numbers one and two of the FIDE World ranking, Magnus Carlsen and Ding Liren, as well as five teenage grandmasters.

Usman Khawaja Wins Shane Warne Men's Test Player of the Year award 2023

  • Australia opening batter Usman Khawaja capped his second comeback as a Test opener by claiming the inaugural Shane Warne Award as the men's Test player of the year.
  • Named in honour of the legendary leg-spinner Shane Warne, who passed away in March 2022, Khawaja polled 22 votes to win ahead of Marnus Labuschagne (20) and Steve Smith (16).

New Zealand to Introduce Debbie H. Medal to Honour Women Cricketers

  • New Zealand Cricket announced the introduction of the Debbie H. Medal, a new award that will recognize the achievements of women cricketers in the country. The medal will be presented annually to the player who has made the most outstanding contribution to women's cricket in New Zealand.
  • The award is named after Debbie Hockley, one of New Zealand's greatest female cricketers and a pioneer for the women's game. Hockley holds the record for the most runs in Women's One Day Internationals (ODIs) for New Zealand and was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2019.
  • The Debbie H. Medal will be awarded at the end of the women's cricket season and is open to all female players, including those who play domestically and internationally. The medal is expected to bring more attention to the women's game and celebrate the contributions of female cricketers in New Zealand.

Chief Coach Graham Reid Steps down Following India's Dismal World Cup Campaign

  • Another big tournament ended with a familiar sense of disappointment for the Indian hockey fans.
  • India's ninth-place finish, just over a year after winning the Olympics bronze medal in Tokyo, at the World Cup came as a big shock, even for coach Graham Reid. The Australian was did not have words when asked to explain the reasons for India's defeat to New Zealand in the crossover match.
  • Reid's resignation, submitted means another coach will leave without finishing his contract. The 58-year-old was given a contract extension till next year's Olympics, but he quit a day after the World Cup. Reid was appointed India coach in 2019.
  • Along with Reid, team's analytical coach Greg Clark and scientific advisor Mitchell David Pemberton have also resigned.
  • The Indian team has had seven different coaches in the last 10 years.

Khelo India Youth Games to Commence in Madhya Pradesh

  • The fifth edition of the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) was inaugurated by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in the presence of Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Anurag Singh Thakur at Tatya Tope Nagar Stadium.
  • The KYIG 2022 will be held at 23 venues in eight cities of the state in which nearly 6,000 athletes will take part in 27 different sports.
  • For the first time sports like kayaking, canoeing, canoe slalom and fencing are part of the Khelo India Youth Games.

Hockey World Cup 2023: Germany Beat Belgium in the Final

  • Germany beat Belgium 5-4 in the penalty shootout and won the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup 2023 at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, India. The scores were level at the end of regulation time at 3-3. This is Germany's third Hockey World Cup title after it in 2002 and 2006. With this, Germany levelled with Netherlands and Australia. Germany also became the fourth team to register a come-from-behind win in a World Cup final. From a 2-0 deficit to a 3-2 to lead and ultimately a shootout, they eventually became champions.

England's Ben Stokes and Nat Sciver Win ICC Annual Awards

  • England Test captain Ben Stokes and England all-rounder Nat Sciver were among the winners in the International Cricket Council's annual awards.
  • All-rounder Stokes was named Men's Test Cricketer of the Year while Sciver won the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy for ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year.
  • Sciver was also named Women's one-day international (ODI) Cricketer of the Year.

Australian Open 2023

  • Novak Djokovic defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final of men's singles match of the Australian Open 2023. Djokovic won his 10th Australian Open and 22nd Grand Slam. He levelled Rafael Nadal with his 22nd Grand Slam title. In the women's singles category, Aryna Sabalenka defeated Elena Rybakina in the final and win the women's singles tennis title at the 2023 Australian Open.
  • The 2023 Australian Open was a Grand Slam level tennis tournament held at Melbourne Park, from 16–29 January 2023. It was the 111th edition of the Australian Open, the 55th in the Open Era, and the first major of the year. There is a total prize pot of AUD $76.5 million (around £43.3m) for the Australian Open 2023.

India Wind First Women's U-19 T20 World Cup

  • India won its maiden ICC title in women's cricket as a bunch of sprightly and talented teenagers lifted the inaugural U-19 World Cup with an emphatic seven-wicket victory over England.
  • The Shafali Verma-led India U-19 squad managed to do what their seniors could not do by clearing the final hurdle in a global event.
