ACF Confers Grandmaster D. Gukesh with Player-of-the-Year Award

  • Indian Grandmaster D. Gukesh was honoured with Player-of-the-Year award by the Asian Chess Federation (ACF) for clinching the gold medal with a record-breaking score of 9/11 in the 44th Chess Olympiad at Mahabalipuram last year (2022).
  • In March 2022, Gukesh became only the sixth Indian to break the 2700 Elo-rating mark, and the youngest Grandmaster from the country to be rated above 2700.
  • The All India Chess Federation (AICF) bagged the 'Most Active Federation' award conferred during the ACF annual summit.
  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin was conferred with Man-of-the-Year award for his effort in the successful hosting of the FIDE Chess Olympiad in August 2022 within a short notice of four months.

Govind Kumar Sahani Bags Silver Medal at the Strandja Memorial Boxing Tournament

  • Indian boxers returned with eight medals from Strandja — three silvers and five bronze medals. Despite losing gold to Uzbekistan's Shodiyorjon Melikuziev, an Asian U-22 Championships silver medallist, the silver was a validation for Sahani that his career is on the right track.

Aldrin Breaks National Long Jump Record

  • Tamil Nadu's Jeswin Aldrin hogged the limelight with a national record in the men's long jump in the second AFI National Jumps competition.
  • He leapt 8.42 m to erase the previous mark of 8.36 m set by compatriot M. Sreeshankar at the Federation Cup in April 2022.

Asia's Longest ever Cycle Race Flagged off from Srinagar, J&K

  • Asia's longest cycle race from Kashmir to Kanyakumari was flagged off from Kashmir.
  • Organised by J&K sports council, the ultra cycle race was flagged off from Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar by divisional commissioner (Kashmir), Vijay Kumar in presence of officials and participants.
  • This cycle race is recognised by World Ultra Cycling Association, USA and declared as the Asian Ultra Cycling Championship & World Ultra Cycling Championship.
  • The participants shall peddle in Solo, Team of 2, Team of 4 with cut-off time of 12 days, 10 days and 8 days respectively.
  • The 3,651 km-long race with total elevation gain of 1895p mts started from Srinagar and will end in the Southern tip of the Indian Peninsula, Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu.
  • The route of the cycle race passes through 12 major states, three major metropolises and over 20 major cities.

India's Ashwin Replaces Jimmy Anderson as No.1 Ranked Test Bowler

  • Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin jumped to the top of the latest ICC Men's Test Bowling Rankings, replacing England pacer James Anderson.
  • Ashwin claimed the top spot after taking six wickets in India's emphatic victory over Australia in the second Test in New Delhi.
  • Anderson dropped to second place after England's stunning loss to New Zealand in the Wellington Test.
  • Ashwin first claimed the top honour among Test bowlers in 2015, and has returned to the top spot on several occasions since then.

Anupama, Mithun Crowned Women's and Men's Singles Champions in Badminton Nationals

  • Former world junior no. 1 Anupama Upadhyaya and Mithun Manjunath registered contrasting victories to clinch the women's and men's singles titles in the Senior National Badminton Championship in the Balewadi stadium, Pune.
  • Anupama got the better of Aakarshi Kashyap 20-22, 21-17, 24-22 and Mithun dominated the men's singles summit clash against Priyanshu Rajawat 21-16, 21-11.
  • Top seed Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly were crowned the new women's doubles champions while T. Hemanagendra Babu and Kanika Kanwal clinched the mixed doubles crown.
  • Men's doubles combination of S. Kushal Raj and S. Prakash Raj clinched the men's doubles title.

Jumper Aishwarya Banned for 4 Years

  • India's top triple-jumper Aishwarya Babu was banned by the National Anti-Doping Agency's (NADA) disciplinary panel for four years for using a prohibited anabolic steroid.
  • Babu was dropped from the Birmingham CWG last year (2022) along with sprinter S. Dhanalakshmi after testing positive for the steroid, which is on the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) prohibited list.
  • The athlete tested positive for ostarine — a drug that falls in the category of selective androgen receptor modulator (SRAM) — during the National Inter-State Championships, held in June 2022 in Chennai. Babu had won the triple jump gold at the championships with a national record-breaking lunge of 14.14 metres. Having been provisionally suspended in July 2022, Babu has already served six months of her four-year ban.

Tennis Star Sania Mirza Received 'Inspirational Icon' Award from Former India Cricket Captain Sun...

  • Six-time Grand Slam champion Sania Mirza won the 'Inspirational Icon' award at the Sportstar Aces Awards at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai.
  • Tennis star Sania, who announced her retirement earlier this month, was a trailblazer. Sania returned stronger than ever from a wrist injury in 2008, and has served an inspiration for young girls across the nation. She reached a highest career singles ranking of 27.
  • Sania received the award from former India cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar. "Growing up, like most youngsters, I read the Sportstar magazine. I dreamt of being on the cover one day. I put up Sportstar posters of Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar and others who have inspired me. It is a true honour for me to be here, and to be a part of the Sportstar family," Sania said.

Harmanpreet to Lead India in Hockey Pro League Matches Against Germany and Australia

  • Drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh will lead a 20-member Indian men's hockey team against reigning world champions Germany and world No. 4 Australia in the upcoming FIH Hockey Pro League matches in Rourkela. Harmanpreet will be assisted by mid-fielder Hardik Singh.
  • The squad includes experienced goalkeeper PR Sreejesh and young Pawan, who replaced Krishan Bahadur Pathak, who has sought leave for his marriage.
  • The defence will be led by Harmanpreet, Jugraj Singh, Nilam Sanjeep Xess, Jarmanpreet Singh, Sumit, Manjeet, and Manpreet Singh.
  • The midfielders include Hardik, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Moirangthem Rabichandra Singh, Vishnukant Singh, Dilpreet Singh, Shamsher Singh and Raj Kumar Pal. Young S Karthi, Sukhjeet Singh, Abhishek and Gurjant will form the fulcrum of the strike force.
  • Australian David John and BJ Kariappa have been named as the interim coaches along with Shivendra Singh for the upcoming matches.
  • Those players who have not been selected have been relieved from the national coaching camp to play in the third Hockey India Senior Men Inter-Department National Championships 2023, which began in Bengaluru.
  • The national selectors have chosen a young team that is making good progress on the international stage. They will be well-guided by the presence of senior players who have extensive international experience playing for India.
