IIM Skips Quota For PhD Course

  •  The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, has invited applications from prospective researchers for its doctoral programme but the advertisement has no provision for reservation of seats for candidates from socially disadvantaged sections, triggering criticism that it was blatantly violating a central law.
  • The Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act provides for setting aside 49.5 per cent of seats in institutes of higher learning — 15 per cent for Scheduled Castes, 7.5 per cent for Scheduled Tribes and 27 per cent for the Other Backward Classes.

Meghalaya Launches Health Insurance Merging it with Ayushman

  •  Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma launched the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS-IV) in convergence with that of the Centre's Ayushman Bharat scheme.
  • The MHIS-IV targets to cover more than 8 lakh households offering over 2300 medical and surgical packages and up to Rs 5 lakh per family.
  • The new scheme will be functional from February 1, 2020.

Govt, IBM Join Hands For Train-the-Trainer programme

  •  To train the trainers in AI, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and IBM have joined hands with the aim to train 10,000 faculty members from ITIs across India. 
  • The programme will involve 14 trainers across seven locations with over 200 workshops during a one-year period. 
  • As part of the programme, ITI trainers will be trained on basic artificial intelligence (AI) skills towards using the technology in their day-to-day training activities.

10 Crore Beneficiaries Received E-Cards For Cashless Treatment Under Ayushman Bharat: Govt

  •  Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan has said that 22 thousand health and wellness centres have been made functional and 10 crore beneficiaries have received e-cards under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
  • The Ayushman Bharat - Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana provides cashless and paperless access to services for the beneficiary at the point of service.
  • It provides a health assurance cover of 5 lakh rupees per family per year for secondary and tertiary care for serious and catastrophic illnesses.
  • Since the launch of the scheme, over 45 lakh patients have been admitted to hospitals to receive treatment under the programme.
  • The Minister said, Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana is completing its first year of launch on 23rd September 2019 and is being celebrated as Ayushman Pakhawada since 15 September, 2019.

Wing Commander Anjali Singh Becomes India's First Female Military Diplomat

  •  Wing Commander Anjali Singh has become India's first female military diplomat to be posted in any of the Indian missions abroad.
  • Singh has joined the Indian Embassy in Russia as the Deputy Air Attache.
  • Singh, who is trained on MiG-29 fighter aircraft, joined her new assignment on September 10, 2019.

Government to Offer 1,000 PhD Fellowships to ASEAN Students At IITs

  •  The government is set to launch a major programme offering 1,000 PhD fellowships to ASEAN students at IITs in India.
  • The admission portal for the programme is being executed by IIT Delhi for offering PhD fellowships to ASEAN students in all IITs in India.
  • The lunch ceremony of the ASEAN PhD fellowships at IITs will be held on September 16, 2019 and will be jointly inaugurated by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Minister of HRD Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank'.
  • Head of Missions of ASEAN countries, senior officials of of the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Directors of all 23 IITs, Chairman of UGC and Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog would also be present at the event.

HRD Minister Launches Initiatives Of MIC and AICTE to Boost Research And Innovation

  •  Union Human Resource Development Minister, Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' attended the First Annual Innovation Festival of the MHRD's Innovation Cell (MIC).
  • MIC organized the first Annual Innovation Festival in coordination with AICTE. During this festival, Innovation cell showcased more than 70 top students' innovations from across India.
  • Minister of State for HRD, Shri Sanjay Dhotre was also present on the occasion.
  • Union Minister also launched the Smart India Hackathon 2020, Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) 2020, and Institution's Innovation Council 2.0. 
  • The event also witnessed the release of the Start-Up Policy Document and SIH Report, launch of Technical Teacher's Training Module, ATAL Academies, Protsahan Mudra Scheme, Vishwakarma Award and the Vice Chancellor's Meet on the Student Induction Programme, which has bridged the gap between students and teachers through creatively designed programs that have unveiled the best potential of a student outside of the book curriculum.

MHRD Introduces Study of AI at School Level

  •  Ministry of Human Resource and Development has prepared a module to introduce the study of Artificial Intelligence at the school level by joining hands with the technology leaders like Intel.
  • Addressing the Central Board of Secondary Education's Teachers Awards 2018-19, Union Human Resource and Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishak said, it is a big leap in our education system that artificial intelligence which was otherwise taught at the college level, is now been introduced from class 8th.
  • During the event, 34 teachers were felicitated for their outstanding and innovative contribution in the field of teaching. Along with the award ceremony, three initiatives were also announced.
