LSE To Host New Mahatma Gandhi Scholarships

  •  The trust responsible for installing Mahatma Gandhi's statue in Parliament Square in 2015 announced a fund for scholarships named after the iconic leader of India's freedom struggle for deserving Indian students at the London School of Economics.
  • Meghnad Desai, member of the House of Lords and chair of the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust, said it is donating £100,000 as an endowment towards the scholarships in keeping with its mandate to spread the message of Gandhi.
  • The seed money is expected to be joined by other donations so that a corpus would be built up in time, the trust said, adding that its endowment has been welcomed by the LSE director, Minouche Shafik, who is currently on a visit to India.

Tata Group Private Partner in Indian Institute Of Skills, Mumbai

  •  Tata Education Development Trust will invest ₹300 crore in the PPP, not-for-profit facility.
  • Mahendra Nath Pandey, Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), laid the foundation stone for Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) at Mumbai.
  • Union Minister Sanjay Dhotre launches Curriculum for Life Skills (Jeevan Kaushal) designed by University Grants Commission (UGC)
  • UGC constituted Expert Committee prepared a Curriculum for Life Skills (JeevanKaushal) for Under Graduate Programme.
  • The curriculum is designed to impart and strengthen the knowledge, skills and dispositions believed to be the best requisites of the current Industry and thereby empower the talent inherent in each learner. 

Kerala To Set Up India's First Global Trade Centre For Women

  •   Kerala is all set to set up India's first International Women's Trade Centre (iWTC), in consonance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDs), in Kozhikode.
  • This initiative aims to accelerate women entrepreneurship and secure gender parity while providing women with a safe place away from home to start new businesses, set up or expand, and get their products marketed globally.
  • The first phase of iWTC, being executed under the Gender Park's "Vision 2020", is scheduled to be completed by 2021.

More Indian Institutes In List, But IISc Slips In Global Rank

  •  More Indian education institutions figured in the latest global ranking released  but the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), which was the only Indian entry in the top 300 in 2018, slipped into the 301-350 group due to a "significant fall" in its research citation impact.
  • The Times Higher Education's 2020 edition of its World University Rankings of 1,300 universities in 92 countries shows 56 Indian institutions (up from 49 last year), making India the fifth most-represented country in the list and the third in Asia behind Japan and China .
  • The University of Oxford retains the top spot for the fourth year, while the California Institute of Technology rises from fifth to second. The University of Cambridge, Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology drop one place to third, fourth and fifth respectively.
  • The Indian Institute of Science tops the Indian universities on the list but now shares this position with the Indian Institute of Technology - Ropar, after the former dropped into the 301-350 bracket.
  • It is the first time that an Indian university has not featured in the top 300 of the ranking since 2012, when just a single institution from the country, the Indian Institute of Technology - Bombay, was ranked.

Eklavya Schools for Tribals

  •  Union Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would launch Eklavya schools exclusively for the tribal students of the country on September 12, 2019.
  • The central government has given approval to set up 462 Eklavya residential schools on the lines of Navodaya schools.
  • The residential school would have 450 tribal students from class six to twelve. Around Rs. 10,000 crore would be spent.
  • All the 462 schools would be opened in Jharkhand, Odisha, North eastern and other states in next two years.

Country's First Global Trade Centre for Women

  •  In a major initiative to accelerate women entrepreneurship and secure gender parity, the Kerala government would set up the country's first International Women's Trade Centre (iWTC), in consonance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in Kozhikode.
  • A key project of the state's Gender Park under the Department of Social Justice, it is envisaged as a safe space away from home for women to harness their entrepreneurial capabilities, set up or expand their businesses and get their products marketed globally.
  • The first phase of iWTC, being executed under the Gender Park's "Vision 2020", is scheduled to be completed by 2021.

Tamil Nadu Ranks Lowest in Coverage of Iodised Salt

  •  According to a first-of-its-kind national survey to measure the coverage of iodised salt, Tamil Nadu has the lowest consumption of iodised salt despite being the third biggest producer of salt in the country.
  • The study showed that 76.3% of Indian households consumed adequately iodised salt, which is salt with at least 15 parts per million of iodine.
  • The five worst performers were Tamil Nadu (61.9%), Andhra Pradesh (63.9%), Rajasthan (65.5%), Odisha (65.8%) and Jharkhand (68.8%).
  • The survey was conducted by Nutrition International in collaboration with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and the Indian Coalition for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (ICCIDD).
  • The survey tested the iodine content in samples of cooking salt from households to estimate the coverage of iodised salt.
  • Gujarat produces 71% of salt in the country, followed by Rajasthan at 17% and Tamil Nadu at 11%. The rest of the country accounts for a mere 1% of salt produced.

Delhi to host 1st conference on military medicine for SCO member-states

  •  The first conference on military medicine for Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states will be held from September 12 to September 13, 2019.
  • The conference will be the first military co-operation event hosted by India, under the SCO Defence Co-operation Plan 2019-2020, after it became an SCO member-state in 2017.
  • The conference will be conducted by the Indian Armed Forces under the aegis of Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS), with the aim to share best practices in the field of military medicine, build capacities and overcome common challenges.

Sex Ratio Improved From 918 To 931 In Five Years

  •  States and districts were honoured for improved sex ratio and awareness generation under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign.
  • Haryana, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh received honours for improving sex ratio at birth. Nine districts were also awarded for better sex ratio at birth.
  • These include East Kameng of Arunachal Pradesh, Mahendragarh and Bhiwani in Haryana, Udham Singh Nagar of Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu's Namakkal, and Jalgaon district of Maharashtra.
  • During the event, 10 districts were also awarded for good work in awareness generation and outreach activities under the campaign.
  • Women and Child Development Minister, Smriti Zubin Irani said, under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narender Modi, the country has made remarkable 13 points jump in national sex ratio from 918 to 931 in last 5 years.

Govt. Launches Campaign To Promote 'Eat Right Movement'

  •  Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, kick-started  POSHAN Maah 2019 with a year-long social and mass media campaign on the Eat Right India movement.
  •  Dr. Vardhan also launched the new Eat Right India logo that represents a healthy plate, an online eat right quiz and online course for frontline health workers.
  • The Eat Right India movement is a crucial preventive healthcare measure to trigger social and behavioural change through a judicious mix of regulatory measures, combined with soft interventions for ensuring awareness and capacity building of food businesses and citizens alike.
