All Wuhan Evacuees Test Negative for Coronavirus

  • All 645 Indians evacuated from China's Wuhan, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak, have tested negative for the deadly infection, Union health ministry confirmed.
  • The ICMR said that all the evacuees will be again tested on the 14th day of their quarantine period. "On the basis of the test results, it will be decided whether it is safe to let them go.

TalentSprint Expands its Women Engineers Program

  • TalentSprint announced the expansion of its Women Engineers (WE) Program, with enhanced support from Google. Building on the strong industry acceptance of the first cohort, the second cohort will select, train, and enable 120 talented women engineering students to become world-class software engineers. The program is open to first year women engineering students across India.

Five more IIITs to Get Institute of National Importance Tag

  • The Union Cabinet gave its approval to confer the status of Institution of National Importance (INI) to five Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs). The five IIITs in PPP mode at Surat, Bhopal, Bhagalpur, Agartala and Raichur will now be able to use the nomenclature of Bachelor of Technology (BTech) or Master of Technology (MTech) or PhD degree.

One in 15 Indians Will Die of Cancer

  • One in every 10 Indians will develop cancer and one in every 15 will die of the disease, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said in a report, highlighting the perils posed by the illness.
  • According to the study, India, with a population of 1.35 billion, witnessed as many as 1.16 million new cancer cases and 784,800 cancer deaths in 2018. Breast cancer, oral cancer, cervical cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer and colorectal cancer most common types of cancer in India, which together accounted for 49% of all new cancer cases.
  • Cancer patterns in India are dominated by a high burden of tobacco-related head and neck cancers, particularly oral cancer, in men and of cervical cancer in women; both of these cancer types are associated with lower socioeconomic status.

Maharashtra Tops List of States Hit by Global Medical Data Leak

  • According to a recent report published by Greenbone Sustainable Resilience, a German cyber security firm, medical details of over 120 million Indian patients have been leaked and made freely available on the Internet.
  • What is even more worrying is that the number of data troves containing this sensitive data went up by a significant number in the Indian context a month after Greenbone's initial report was published. The updated report also places Maharashtra at the top of the States affected by the leak.

Oldest to Clear Kerala Literacy Exam

  • Bhageerathi Amma, a 105-year-old great-grandmother became the oldest person to clear the Kerala literacy exam, which is equivalent to class 4 level education, with 74.5 per cent marks. At the age of nine, she was forced to drop out of school by her mother. She had formal education till class 3.
  • Bhageerathi Amma has surpassed the previous record created by Karthiyani Amma. In 2018, 96-year-old Karthiyani Amma was among top scorers of the literacy exam by scoring 98 out of 100 marks. Karthiyani, who had never been to school, was working as a domestic help and cleaning staff.

ICSI Revamps Syllabus

  • The Institute of Company Secretary of India (ICSI) revamped the curriculum for the CS course. As per the new rule, a 24-month training of soft skills including managerial and leadership capacities will be introduced. Further, the one-month executive development programme (EDP) will train candidates in soft skills as well as IT skills. A 21-month practical training with industry and practical company secretary training will be mandatory for students.
  • The commission has also reduced the minimum gap between the date of registration and date of examination from nine months to six months for appearing in all modules and from six months to four months for appearing in any one module of the executive or professional programme.

Tamil Nadu Government Cancels Public Exams for Classes 5, 8

  • In what will come as a major relief for students, Tamil Nadu's School Education Department announced that there will be no board exams for Classes 5 and 8 students. In a circular issued by School Education Minister K. A. Sengottaiyan, the department has said that it has withdrawn the order passed on September 13, 2019 to conduct board exams for Classes 5 and 8 from this academic year.
  • The schools will go back to the exam system that is already in place for the students.

India and Norway Sign 4 MoUs in Higher Education and Research

  • Director-General, Anne Line Wold, Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research signed agreements with India in New Delhi. The agreements were signed during the visit of a delegation of prominent education and research institutions from Norway. Among several agreements, the prominent ones to mention include, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and UiT, The Arctic University of Norway, for cooperation in fields such as biophotonics, health and diagnostic tools, nanotechnology, water management and renewable energy and Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology and UiT, The Arctic University of Norway, to facilitate exchange of students and staff and consolidate joint efforts towards project initiatives in national and EU arena. Moreover, agreements were signed between IIT Jammu and Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and IIT Mandi and Norwegian University of Science and Technology with special focus on activities in landslides, tunnels, water management, hydropower, project-based learning, student and researchers mobility and cold region technologies.

ISRO Young Scientist Programme 2020

  • The application process for the second edition of ISRO Young Scientist Programme 2020 has begun. Candidates who are interested to apply for ISRO should note that the ISRO Young Scientist Programme 2020 aims at providing basic knowledge on space technology, space science, and space applications.
  • Interested candidates should note that the ISRO Young Scientist Programme 2020 will continue for a duration of two weeks - May 11 to May 22, 2020. Three students from each state and union territory will be selected to participate in the programe.
  • Candidates should note that students who have passed Class 8 and are presently a student of Class 9 are eligible to apply for the ISRO Young Scientist Programme 2020. The selection of candidates will be based on the acamedic performance of the students.
  • The two-week ISRO Young Scientist Programme 2020 will be held across four ISRO centres -- in Ahembdabad, Bangalore, Thiruvananthapuram, and Shillong.

Kerala on Alert after its Third Coronavirus Case

  • A medical student who returned from China in January was tested positive for the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in Kerala's Kasaragod district, the government said, announcing the state's and the country's third case of the infection that has killed 362 people and sparked panic across the world.
  • Authorities in Kerala got into a huddle and announced a state calamity, a move that they hope will create more awareness and help contain the virus effectively.
  • All three cases involve medical students who are studying in Wuhan, the Chinese city considered the epicentre of the outbreak. A group of seven, including the three infected persons, travelled back to Kerala in January. The other four are under watch in isolation wards of different hospitals.
