Thailand Medicine Cocktail Sees Apparent Success

  • According to Thailand's health ministry, a Chinese woman infected with the new coronavirus showed a dramatic improvement after she was treated with a cocktail of anti-virals used to treat flu and HIV.
  • As per doctor Kriengsak Attipornwanich, the 71-year-old patient tested negative for the virus 48 hours after Thai doctors administered the combination.
  • The doctors combined the anti-flu drug oseltamivir with lopinavir and ritonavir, anti-virals used to treat HIV.

CBSE Starts Psychological Counselling for Students

  • The CBSE has started provide psychological counselling to Class 10 and 12 students and their parents on how to deal with anxiety and stress due to exams.
  • The 23rd edition of the counselling programme would also use social media platforms to connect with the students in a proactive way.
  • The psychological counselling is from February 1, 2020 when the students prepare for exams, and will continue up to March 30 when they appear for exams.
  • The counselling is available free of cost through IVRS and telephone.

Number of Girls in Higher Education Exceeds Boys for the First Time

  • President Ram Nath Kovind said that in a first, the number of girls admitted to higher education institutes exceeded that of boys.
  • More than Rs. 37,000 crore has been sanctioned for modernisation of 75 educational institutions in the country through the Higher Education Funding Agency.
  • Government initiated action for appointment of about 7,000 teachers in Kendriya Vidyalayas and 12,000 teachers in higher education institutions. 'Swayam2' has also been introduced by the government to strengthen the online education system.

Google Joins Hands with WHO to Contain Coronavirus Outbreak

  • Google is trying to do its part to help curb the impact of Coronavirus. The search giant is aiming to make resources about Coronavirus easily accessible online with the help of World Health Organisation. Any search result about Coronavirus, will be accompanied by links to safety tips, latest information and even Twitter updates from WHO.
  • The search will also provide a link that can be shared on popular social media platforms as well as instant messaging application, WhatsApp. Google will provide direct links to WHO site to leading to basic Q&A about the disease as well provide a general overview of the current situation.
  • Coronavirus threat, which originated in China's Wuhan has spread to over 20 countries and the latest reports suggest death of over 200 people. Following the dramatic spread of the virus, WHO declared the Wuhan-originated outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

Coronavirus Declared Global Health Emergency

  • The new coronavirus has been declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization, as the outbreak continues to spread outside China.
  • The main reason for this declaration is not what is happening in China but what is happening in other countries.
  • The concern is that it could spread to countries with weaker health systems.
  • At least 213 people have died in China - mostly in Hubei province where the virus emerged - with almost 10,000 cases nationally.
  • As per WHO, there had been 98 cases in 18 other countries, but no deaths.
  • Most international cases are in people who had been to the Chinese city of Wuhan in Hubei.

IIT Hyderabad Develop Combination Therapy for the Treatment of Cancer

  • An efficient combination therapy has been developed by IIT Hyderabad researchers for the treatment of cancer.
  • The combination therapy can deal with the heterogeneity of cancer cells in addition to providing synergic therapeutic effects.
  • The research was done in collaboration with researchers from University of Hyderabad, IIT Bombay and Bose Institute, Kolkata.
  • The researchers have developed a synergetic combination of photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemotherapy using a naturally derived anticancer agent and shown its efficacy in destroying cancer cells.

India's First Case of Coronavirus in Kerala

  • India reported its first case of novel coronavirus infection, with the Union health ministry confirming that a student who came back to Kerala from China's Wuhan tested positive for the infection.
  • Kerala health officials said that the female student is stable and is being closely monitored.
  • Health officials said that isolation wards ready in all hospitals and medical college in the state. The state is on high alert after detection of first case in the country.
  • In all, 806 people are under observation in Kerala.

University of Auckland Ranked Number One Globally

  • The University of Auckland's commitment to sustainability and positive social impact helped it achieve the number one spot in the new global rankings.
  • The global ranks were released by The Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Ratings, which measures how well educational institutions are delivering on the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • The goals were adopted in 2016 to provide a framework for developing the world in a sustainable way.
  • The Impact Rankings are the first global attempt to measure the broader impact universities have on society, and the difference they make in the world. Universities' impacts are assessed by measuring them against some of the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

First Human Transmission in Germany

  • A German man who contracted the novel strain of coronavirus was infected by a colleague visiting from China, in what appeared to be the first human-to-human transmission in Europe. A 33-year-old German man attended a training session held by a visiting Chinese colleague in the Bavaria region. He tested positive for the virus.

Record Hike in Indian Students at UK Capital Universities

  • A record hike in the number of Indian students choosing London universities has resulted in India regaining the third spot in the UK capital's overseas students tally, after China and the US. According to an analysis of new data from the UK's Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) released in 2020, Indian student numbers in London grew by 34.7 per cent in 2018-19, marking the largest numbers since 2011-12. India's rise up one rank comes at the expense of Italy, which slipped one place down to fourth, followed by France in fifth place – marking a promising rise of students from outside the European Union (EU) ahead of Brexit Day.
