Pune Institute Begins Animal Trials for Vaccine

  • Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) joined the race to develop a vaccine against novel coronavirus and announced that they have a candidate, for which animals trials have begun.
  • The vaccine may be tested on humans as early as six months, pending approval from regulatory agencies. The project is likely cost Rs. 300 crore.
  • The SII vaccine candidate was developed in collaboration with a US biotechnology company, Codagenix, which uses viral sequencing data to develop a weakened virus to develop immunity against a disease, according to its website.

Eleven Indian Universities in Top 100 for Emerging Economies

  • Indian universities had a good performance year within the emerging economies of the world as a record 11 made it to the top 100 Times Higher Education's (THE) Emerging Economies University Rankings 2020.
  • Only China has more universities than India in the top 100 at 30 from a total of 47 countries and territories included in the analysis released in London.
  • A total of 56 Indian universities appear in the full ranking of a total of 533 universities across emerging economies of the world.
  • The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), ranked 16th, is India's top-ranked institution followed by the Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs).

Stand-alone Institutes can Run PGDM: AICTE

  • The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) said that Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) courses can be run by stand-alone institutions, which are neither universities nor affiliated to any university, similar to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). Over a period of time, deemed to be universities have added PGDM course under the banner of 'Management Programme' in contravention of norms. According to the AICTE Regulations, 2020, conducting PGDM and MBA courses in the same institution is not permissible.

Coronavirus: Largest Study Suggests Elderly and Sick are most at Risk

  • Health officials in China have published the first details of more than 70,000 cases of Covid-19, in the biggest study since the outbreak began.
  • Data from the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CCDC) found that more than 80% of the cases have been mild with the sick and elderly most at risk.
  • The research also points to the high risk for medical staff.
  • The findings put the overall death rate of the Covid-19 virus at 2.3%.
  • In Hubei, the worst affected province, the death rate is 2.9% compared with only 0.4% in the rest of the country.
  • China's latest official figures released on Tuesday put the overall death toll at 1,868 and 72,436 infections.

Chinese Doctors Using Plasma Therapy on Coronavirus

  • Doctors in Shanghai are using infusions of blood plasma from people who have recovered from the coronavirus to treat those still battling the infection, reporting some encouraging preliminary results.
  • A top emergency expert at the World Health Organization (WHO) said that using convalescent plasma was a "very valid" approach to test, but that it was important to get the timing right to maximize the boost to a patient's immunity.
  • The coronavirus epidemic is believed to have originated in a seafood market in the central city of Wuhan, capital of Hubei province, and has so far killed 1,770 people and infected more than 70,000 in mainland China.
  • Lu Hongzhou, professor and co-director of the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Centre said that the hospital had set up a special clinic to administer plasma therapy and was selecting patients who were willing to donate. The blood would be screened to check if he or she had other diseases like hepatitis B or C, he added.

Bihari Migrant Woman Emerges Topper in Malayalam Literacy Exam

  • A 26-year-old Bihari woman proved language is no barrier as she emerged the topper in a literacy examination conducted in Kerala for migrant labourers. Romiya Kathur, hailing from a non-descript village in Bihar, scored the first rank with full 100 marks in the examination held by the Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority recently.
  • She had reached Kerala in search of a job along with her husband Saifullah and settled down in Umayanalloor in southern Kollam district in 2014.
  • A total of 1,998 migrant labourers had appeared for the literacy exam in the second phase of the scheme "Changathi" across the state in January.
  • Changathi (Friend) project is aimed at teaching migrant labourers, living in the state, Malayalam within four months.

Beijing Orders 14-day Quarantine for Returnees

  • Beijing ordered everyone returning to the city to go into quarantine for 14 days or risk punishment in the latest attempt to contain the deadly new coronavirus.
  • Residents were told to self-quarantine or go to designated venues to quarantine after returning to the Chinese capital from holidays.
  • The measure came as Egypt confirmed the first coronavirus case in Africa.
  • Over 1,500 people have died from the virus, which originated in Wuhan city.
  • The notice on Friday from Beijing's virus prevention working group was issued as residents returned from spending the Lunar New Year in other parts of China.
  • The holiday was extended this year to help contain the outbreak.
  • More than 20 million people live in Beijing.

Madhya Pradesh Grapples with Spiralling Neonatal Deaths

  • According to the National Health Mission (NHM), Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest percentage of newborn deaths of 11.5% against the total admissions to government-run sick newborn care units (SNCUs) in the past three years across the country, a rate ominously spiralling since 2017. The country's average is 7%.
  • Although admissions of neonates (under 28 days) in the State have dropped from April 2017 to December 2019 — remaining lower than West Bengal, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh — the percentage of deaths at 12.2% surpassed Bihar's in 2019. Meanwhile, West Bengal, where 34,344 neonatal deaths occurred in the period, the most in the country, the declining percentage of deaths from 9.2% in 2017 to 8.9% in 2019 coincided with a slump in admissions.

KLAY Schools Launches Content Platform for Parents

  • Kids Learning And You (KLAY) Schools, a chain of non-franchised pre-schools and daycare centres, launched a content platform for parents.
  • The platform, which is called 'That Parent Thing', would provide knowledge and experiences from experts and parents across a variety of subjects including work and life.
  • The experts will include a speech therapist, a child psychologist, a body-positivity ambassador, an angel investor and educator.
  • The platform will attempt to answer every question that a parent may have on topics pertaining to infants, toddlers and pre-teens while raising their child, and help create a community of parents that can rely on each other.

Nine Medical Colleges, Two AIIMS Sanctioned for Jammu and Kashmir

  • Union Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Jitendra Singh performed bhoomi poojan ceremony of AIIMS building.
  • Speaking on the occasion, Singh said that Jammu and Kashmir has been allocated two AIIMS - one in Jammu and other in Kashmir.
  • According to an official press release, Singh said that nine medical colleges have also been sanctioned in Jammu and Kashmir in addition to the two AIIMS.
  • The Union Government had approved the proposal for setting up an AIIMS in Jammu at Vijaypur, District Samba under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) in January 2019.
