Nandrajog Sworn in CJ of Bombay HC

  •  Justice Pradeep Nandrajog was sworn in Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. He was earlier Chief Justice of the Rajasthan HC.
  • He succeeds Justice Naresh Patil, who retired as Chief Justice of the Bombay HC.
  • Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao administered the oath of office to Justice Nandrajog at a brief ceremony held at the Raj Bhawan.

Former Maldives Prez Makes a Comeback

  •  Mohamed Nasheed made a dramatic return to the top of the National Parliament, with his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)  headed for a two-thirds majority in the 87-member House.
  • Nasheed promised to use his party's mandate to usher in a new era of stability and democracy in the Indian Ocean archipelago as it emerges from years of strongman rule, political crises and corruption scandals miring the government and judiciary. 
  • The comprehensive victory was another rebuke for Nasheed's arch-rival and autocratic former President Abdulla Yameen, who was dumped in a shock election defeat in September under a cloud of corruption and embezzlement allegations.

Dan Robbins Dies

  •   Dan Robbins, a package designer who died at 93, helped to conceive what became known as paint by numbers.
  • He copied the idea from Leonardo, who numbered the objects in the background of his paintings and had his apprentices paint them with designated colours.
  • He copied one of the master's basic techniques and thereby enabled children to grow up believing that they, too, could paint "The Last Supper."

Shatrughan Sinha Joins Congress Party

  •  Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Shatrughan Sinha, joined the Congress party .
  • The party fielded him as its Lok Sabha poll candidate from the Patna Sahib constituency in Bihar.
  • The actor-turned-politician, who is the incumbent MP from the seat, will face senior BJP leader and Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. 
  • Congress's new list also names former Himachal Pradesh minister Ramlal Thakur from Hamirpur and Jasbir Singh Gill Dimpa from Khadoor Sahib in Punjab.

CII's New Chief

  • Vikram Kirloskar, CMD of Kirloskar Systems Ltd., and vice-chairman of Toyota Kirloskar Motor, has assumed office as president of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for 2019-20. He takes over from Rakesh Bharti Mittal, vice-chairman, Bharti Enterprises. Uday Kotak, founder and MD & CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank, is the president designate of CII for 2019-20, while T. V. Narendran, CEO & MD of Tata Steel Limited, takes over as CII vice-president for 2019-20.

Nasscom's New Chairman

  • IT industry body Nasscom appointed WNS Global Services Group CEO Keshav Murugesh as its chairman for 2019-20. He takes over from his previous role as vice-chairman of Nasscom, succeeding Rishad Premji (Wipro chief strategy officer and board member).
  • Nasscom has appointed Infosys COO U. B. Pravin Rao as its vice-chairman for 2019-20.

David Malpass President of the World Bank

  • David Malpass, a senior U.S. treasury official in President Donald Trump's administration, was unanimously chosen as the president of the World Bank. Since the bank's creation, all of its heads have been Americans, following an unwritten rule that also ensures European leadership at the top of its sister institution, the International Monetary Fund.

U.K.'s Media Envoy

  • Amal Clooney has been appointed the U.K.'s special envoy on media freedom, as the U.K. prepares to host an international conference this July in the wake of attacks on journalists across the world.
  • Ms. Clooney pointed to India as one of the five countries where journalists were most at the risk of political assassination for their work as she also noted that such attacks happened in Europe as well. She also highlighted the brutal murder of Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last year.

D. Choudhury Takes Over as Senior Air Staff Officer

  • Air Marshal D. Choudhury AVSM VM VSM took over as Senior Air Staff Officer of Western Air Command.
  • An alumnus of National Defence Academy, Air Marshal D. Choudhury AVSM VM VSM was commissioned on December 22, 1983. The Air Officer is a Fighter Combat Leader and an Instrument Rating Instructor and Examiner. He is also an alumnus of Royal College of Defence Studies UK and a Post Graduate in Strategy and International Security from King's College London. Air Marshal D Choudhury AVSM VM VSM is also a Master of Philosophy on Defence and Strategic Studies.
  • He has over 5000 sorties of flying on operational fighter aircraft and is Fully Ops and MG on MiG-21(all variants), MiG-27, MiG-29 and Su-30 aircraft. Air Marshal D. Choudhury has commanded 15 Sqn, Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment (TACDE) and two frontline bases as the AOC.

  • Rajan Anandan, Google's Southeast Asia and India vice-president, has quit the company after an eight-year, to join Sequoia Capital.
  • Rajan Anandan joined Sequoia Capital India as a Managing Director.
  • As head of Google India & southeast Asia, Mr. Anandan has played a key role in expanding the Internet ecosystem in the region, increasing adoption among consumers and businesses and accelerating innovation, while building a multi-billion dollar business that continues to grow very fast.
