India's First Lokpal
Justice Pinaki Ghose took oath as the first Lokpal of India.
He was sworn-in in the presence of President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.
Karambir Singh is Next Navy Chief
The government appointed Vice Admiral Karambir Singh as the next Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS).
With the announcement, the government has for the second time overlooked the seniority principle in service chief appointments.
Vice Admiral Singh will take over as the 24th Navy Chief from incumbent CNS Admiral Sunil Lanba, who is set to retire on May 31 on completing three years in office.
He is currently the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C) of Eastern Naval Command headquartered at Visakhapatnam.
Randhir to Head OCA Committee
Raja Randhir Singh, Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) life vice-president, was appointed as chairman of its Coordination Committee, during the 38th OCA general assembly held in Bangkok.
The committee will be responsible for the conduct of the Asian Games, Asian Winter Games, Asian Beach Games, Asian Youth Games and Asian Indoor Games.
BJP's National Vice President
Union Minister Uma Bharti has been appointed the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
In 1989, Bharti contested and won Khajuraho Lok Sabha seat, and retained it in elections conducted in 1991, 1996 and 1998. In 1999, she switched her constituency and won Bhopal seat in Madhya Pradesh. She won the last poll from Jhansi in UP.
In December 2018, Bharti had announced to take a break from active politics to focus on the issue of Ram temple and cleaning of Ganga River.
She had also announced that she would not contest the Lok Sabha polls in 2019.

Gautam Gambhir Joins BJP
Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir joined the Bharatiya Janata Party with weeks to go for the Lok Sabha elections and said that he was impressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision.
With his reach of nearly nine million followers, the ex-cricketer has been frequently commenting on social and security issues leading to speculation that he was planning to join politics.
Bhaichung to Contest Assembly Polls
Football star Bhaichung Bhutia has decided to contest the upcoming Assembly polls in his home State Sikkim.
Mr. Bhutia's newly formed Hamro Sikkim Party announced candidates for the 23 Assembly seats and the lone Lok Sabha seat in the State.
He had contested the 2014 Lok Sabha election and 2016 Assembly poll from West Bengal on Trinamool Congress ticket but lost.
Hitesh Patel Detained
Hitesh Patel, wanted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Rs. 8,100-crore bank fraud case involving the Vadodara-based Sterling Biotech Group, has been detained at Tirana in Albania.
Albanian authorities acted on the basis of an Interpol Red Notice issued against Patel, following a request from the ED.
He is the brother-in-law of Nitin and Chetan Sandesara, owners of the group. A U.S. citizen, the accused managed overseas assets of the Sandesaras.

Brazil's ex-President Michel Temer was arrested as part of a sprawling anti-corruption probe. Police arrested Mr. Temer in Sao Paulo.
Former Mines and Energy Minister Moreira Franco was also detained.

Jagmeet Singh Makes History
Indian-origin Jagmeet Singh has created political history in Canada when he made his debut in the House of Commons as the first non-white leader of a major opposition party in the country.
The arrival of the turbaned leader into the house, cheered by all members, coincided with the induction of a senior woman member into Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's cabinet.
Singh is the leader of the New Democratic Party.
Mayawati Not to Contest Lok Sabha Election
Ms. Mayawati announced that she will not contest the Lok Sabha election.
The former UP Chief Minister said that the decision was taken in the interest of the nation and the people, and keeping in mind the long-term goals of the BSP movement run on the ideals of B.R. Ambedkar and Kanshiram.
Baroness Mary Warnock Passes away
The philosopher and IVF ethics pioneer Baroness Mary Warnock passed away at the age of 94.
She chaired a number of inquiries to inform government policy.
They included a report which led to the creation of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) in 1991.
Baroness Warnock also recommended that children with special educational needs should be included in classrooms with other children, rather than go to specialist schools.
She will be best remembered for her government report into human fertilisation and embryology, which balanced the rights of the embryo with the rights of infertile couples.
It was commissioned after public concerns following the birth of the world's first test tube baby, Louise Brown.
