MLA Dilip Sarkar Passes Away

  • Dilip Sarkar, former Tripura Minister and five-time MLA from Badharghat in Agartala, died after a prolonged illness.
  • Sarkar was a briefly a Minister during the Congress- Tripura Upajati Juba Samiti coalition government in 1988. He joined the BJP before the February 2018 Assembly elections which ended the 20-year rule of the CPI(M)-led Left Front in the State.

Natalia Fileva Dies in Plane Crash

  • One of Russia's richest women died when a private plane on which she was travelling crashed near an airport in Germany. Natalia Fileva, a co-owner of a conglomerate behind the Russian company S7 Airlines, was among three people killed when the six-seater plane crashed.

Basant Jhawar Out of Usha Martin Board

  • Basant Kumar Jhawar, the former chairman of Usha Martin Ltd. (UML), lost his position on the board after shareholders gave thumbs down to a proposal on his continuation beyond March 31, 2019.
  • He is among the founder-promoters of the special steel and wire rope-making company.
  • However, another resolution moved at the company's EGM, seeking continuation of co-founder Brij Kishore Jhawar sailed through with 99.8% votes in favour.

Vinod Dasari Appointed CEO

  • Eicher Motors Ltd. has appointed Vinod K. Dasari as the chief executive officer of Royal Enfield.
  • He will also join the board of Eicher Motors as executive director with immediate effect. He stepped down as MD and CEO of Ashok Leyland on March. He takes over from Siddhartha Lal, who will continue as the MD of Eicher Motors.

Sohail to Take Charge as the Next Foreign Secretary

  • Sohail Mahmood, the current High Commissioner of Pakistan to India, is scheduled to take charge as the next Foreign Secretary in Islamabad. The confirmation came hours after Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi announced the appointment during an interaction with the media.
  • As per reports, he is expected to take charge in the middle of April. He will succeed Tehmina Janjua who will retire in April.

N. S. Dhillon Appointed Strategic Forces Command Chief

  • Fighter pilot Air Marshal N. S. Dhillon was appointed as the new Strategic Forces Command Chief. The Strategic Forces Command looks after the strategic nuclear arsenal of the country.
  • He graduated from the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla (Pune). Later, he attended Defence Services Staff College in Wellington Cantonment and National Defence College in New Delhi.

Mahesh Singh Assumes Charge as Flag Officer

  • Rear Admiral Mahesh Singh NM assumed charge as Flag Officer Commanding Karnataka Naval Area (FOK) at a ceremonial parade at Karwar.
  • Rear Admiral Mahesh Singh is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1987 and is a Navigation and Direction specialist.

Bruce Yardley Passes Away

  • Former Australian Test cricketer, coach and commentator Bruce Yardley passed away at the age of 71.
  • Yardley, who debuted for Australia aged 30, started his cricketing career as a medium-pacer but later turned to be an off-spinner.
  • In 33 Tests for the national team, Yardley took 126 wickets at 31.63. He also has 344 first class wickets.
  • Yardley had coached the Sri Lankan team in the late 1990s.

Naresh Goyal Steps Down

  •  Naresh Goyal agreed to step down as Jet Airways chairman, giving in to pressure from creditors as the airline that he founded 25 years ago teetered on the edge of bankruptcy with thousands of jobs on the line.
  • Goyal's decision, which came during a marathon board meeting, paved the way for banks to provide a cash infusion of Rs.1,500 crore, which is likely to take care of some of immediate payments such as delayed salaries and dues on aircraft lease.
  • Goyal, his wife Anita, and Etihad Airways nominee, director Kevin Knight, also quit the board.
  • Naresh Goyal also ceases to be the chairman of the company.
