First Indian Woman Scientist in London's Royal Society

  •  The Royal Society, London, selected 51 distinguished scientists from across the world as Fellows and Foreign Members on April 16 for their exceptional contributions in the field of science. 
  • Among this year's group of Fellows are Indian clinician scientist Gagandeep Kang and three Indian-origin scientists — American-Canadian mathematician Manjul Bhargava, Australian mathematician Akshay Venkatesh and British microbiologist Gurdyal Besra.
  • Kang is the first Indian woman scientist to be selected as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Before Kang, two Indian origin women scientists — British microscopist Pratibha Gai (2016) and American microbiologist Lalita Ramakrishnan (2018) — had received the honour.
  • Kang is a clinician scientist and a professor in the Department of Gastrointestinal Sciences at the famous Christian Medical College, Vellore.
  • She is the current executive director of the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, Faridabad, which is an autonomous institution under the department of biotechnology of the science and technology ministry.
  • Kang is renowned for her work on viral infections in children, particularly on rotavirus infections that cause high mortality and morbidity in India. She has shown that the Indian population naturally has a lower immunity to rotavirus infections. 

Priyanka Chaturvedi Quits Congress

  •  The Congress lost one of its key spokespersons after Priyanka Chaturvedi resigned from the party and joined the Shiv Sena, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ally, in Mumbai.
  • Her resignation comes days after Chaturvedi expressed displeasure in an April 17 tweet over the reinstatement of Uttar Pradesh Congress workers who had been suspended for allegedly misbehaving with her during a press conference in Mathura in September 2018.

Vivek Rae New Chairman of HOEC

  •  Former Oil Secretary Vivek Rae was appointed as chairman of Hindustan Oil Exploration Company Ltd. Based on the recommendations of the nomination and remuneration committee, the board of directors has appointed Vivek Rae as an additional director (non-executive independent) and chairman of the company with effect from April 18, 2019.

Veteran RJD leader Quits Party

  •  The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) suffered a setback as senior leader and former MP M. A. A. Fatmi resigned from the party and announced his intention to contest from the Madhubani seat.
  • Fatmi resigned from the RJD after almost 30 years of association with the party.
  • Earlier, he had joined hands with RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav in 1989 and made his way to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1991 from the Darbhanga parliamentary seat.

TIME's 2019 list of 100 most influential people

  •  Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani and public-interest litigators Arundhati Katju and Menaka Guruswamy, who spearheaded a historic legal battle for LGBTQ rights in India, are among the Indians who have been named by TIME magazine in its prestigious list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
  • The list includes Indian-American comedian and TV host Hasan Minhaj, US President Donald Trump, Pope Francis, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, iconic golfer Tiger Woods and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Ajay Dixit New CEO of Cairn Oil & Gas

  • Cairn Oil & Gas, a vertical of Vedanta Limited, has appointed Ajay Dixit as its chief executive officer (CEO). Mr. Dixit succeeds Sudhir Mathur who was associated with the company for seven years.
  • With 39 years of experience in the energy sector, Mr. Dixit joined Vedanta in 2015 from Siemens where he was the chief executive officer — energy for South Asia.

Anil Sharma Resigns from Cabinet

  •  Himachal Pradesh Power Minister Anil Sharma tendered his resignation from the Cabinet, days after his son Ashray Sharma was announced as the Congress candidate from the Mandi Lok Sabha constituency.
  • The Minister was under attack from the ruling BJP and facing an uneasy equation with Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur after he conveyed to the party that he would neither campaign against his son nor canvass for the BJP candidate, Ram Swarup Shrama, in the Mandi constituency.
  • He, however, said he was willing to campaign for BJP candidates elsewhere in the State.
  • Earlier, Mr. Anil Sharma's father, former Union Minister Sukh Ram, quit the BJP and along with his grandson joined the Congress.
  • The Congress then fielded Mr. Ashray Sharma as its candidate from Mandi.

Mohan Named Part-time Chairman

  •  The board of City Union Bank Ltd. recommended its independent director R. Mohan to be the next part-time chairman with effect from May 4.
  • The board also forwarded an application to this effect to the Reserve Bank of India as the present incumbent S. Mahalingam's tenure ends on May 3.
  • Mr. Mohan, who has been associated with the bank since 1975, was promoted as the chief general manager in 2011 and in 2014 he was inducted on to the board. He is also part of various board committees.
