Swami Atmabodhanand breaks his Fast

  •  Swami Atmabodhanand has broken his 194-day fast in protest against sand mining and the upcoming dams on key rivers that feed the Ganga.
  • Atmabodhanand had begun fasting days after G. D. Agrawal a former professor and hermit, died of a heart attack on October 11 after a 111-day fast.
  • The young ascetic based at Matri Sadan in Haridwar, said that he had decided to break his fast after a meeting and assurances from Rajiv Ranjan Mishra, Director General, National Mission for Clean Ganga, that existing laws banning sand mining on certain stretches of the Ganga would henceforth be strictly enforced.
  • While the Namami Ganga Mission works to prevent sewage and industrial waste from polluting the Ganga, several groups, ranging from environmentalists to hermits, have accused the government of not taking steps to ensure natural flows in the river. 

State Bank of Pakistan Gets New Governor

  •  Reza Baqir, an economist working for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has been appointed as the Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), as the cash-strapped country seeks to finalise a multi-billion dollar bailout package from the global lender.

Thailand Crowns King Maha Vajiralongkorn

  •  Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn completed Buddhist and Brahmin rituals to symbolically transform him into a living god as the Southeast Asian nation crowned its first monarch in nearly seven decades.
  • The coronation of King Vajiralongkorn took place inside the Grand Palace throne hall in Bangkok after a period of official mourning for his revered father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who died in October 2016 having reigned for 70 years.
  • His coronation comes amid the uncertainty of an unresolved election battle between the current military junta chief and a "democratic front" trying to push the army out of politics. 

HUL Appoints Razdan and Sanzgiri

  •  Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) appointments of Anuradha Razdan as executive director, Human Resources, and Vibhav Sanzgiri as executive director, Research and Development.
  • Both Ms. Razdan and Dr. Sanzgiri will join HUL's management committee with effect from June 1.
  • Ms. Razdan joined HUL as a management trainee in 1999 and has now returned to India after a stint in Unilever. She succeeds B.P. Biddappa, who is moving to a global role with Unilever.
  • Dr. Sanzgiri joined HUL in 1997 and has held global and regional R&D roles in skin care and skin cleansing categories.

AAP MLA Anil Bajpayi joins BJP

  •  Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Gandhi Nagar Anil Bajpay joined the BJP.
  • The move comes at a time when AAP leaders, including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, have accused the BJP of indulging in horse-trading.
  • Bajpayi joined the BJP in presence of national vice president and Delhi BJP in-charge Shyam Jaju, and Union Minister Vijay Goel, at the Delhi unit office.

Master Hirannaiah Passes Away

  • Kannada theatre personality Master Hirannaiah passed away. He had a 68-year association with the stage. He was 85.
  • The son of thespian K Hirannaiah, Narasimhamurthy was born in Mysuru in 1934. He took on the stage name Master Hirannaiah after his debut in his childhood. In 1951, the young actor decided to join his father's theatre company K Hirannaiah Mitra Mandali.
  • His most popular play was Lanchavatara, a critique of corruption in political life.

Air Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria Takes Over

  • Air Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria took over as the Vice Chief of Air Staff succeeding Air Marshal Anil Khosla.
  • Bhadauria was earlier heading the Indian Air Force's Bengaluru-based Training Command. Earlier as a Deputy Chief, he was the chairman of India's negotiating team for 36 Rafale combat aircraft deal with France.
  • He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and was commissioned in the fighter stream of IAF in June 1980 as the recipient of 'Sword of Honour'.  

Masood Azhar as Global Terrorist

  • Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar was listed as a designated terrorist by the UN Security Council 1267 Committee. Significantly, the reasons for listing did not mention the Pulwama attack of February 14, for which the JeM had claimed responsibility, and which found mention in the latest (February 27) listing request for Azhar.
  • Nevertheless, the listing is a victory for India in a decade-old diplomatic battle waged primarily by it and supported by its friends at the UNSC, as it would mean a travel ban, arms embargo and asset freeze on Azhar.
