Joko Widodo Re-elected as President of Indonesia

  •  The surprise early announcement of official election results handed Joko Widodo another term as leader of the world's third-biggest democracy, Indonesia.
  • Presidential challenger Prabowo Subianto, a retired general, vowed to take his claims of widespread cheating to court as several thousand supporters protested in the capital.

Prasanth Kumar Named CEO

  •  WPP-owned media agency GroupM promoted its South Asia chief operating officer (COO) Prasanth Kumar as chief executive officer (CEO) for the region, in place of Sam Singh, who is set to quit.
  • Kumar, who joined GroupM in 2004, has played several leadership roles across India and the region, before becoming the South Asia COO in January.
  • Singh will leave GroupM in June 2019 to takes up a senior role at ByteDance India, a technology firm specialising in content platforms.

Trump Names Woman as Head of US Air Force

  •  US President Donald Trump nominated a former ambassador and Arizona businesswoman to lead the Air Force.
  • Barbara Barrett served as the US ambassador to Finland from 2008 to 2009 under the George W. Bush administration.
  • She also chaired an aeronautics research and development center, The Aerospace Corporation, until 2017.
  • A former lawyer and test pilot, Barrett is also a board member at the Rand Corporation, a think tank that provides research and analysis to the US armed forces.

Yogi Adityanath sacks Om Prakash Rajbhar

  •  Chief minister Yogi Adityanath sacked Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party chief Om Prakash Rajbhar from his Cabinet, two days after a case was filed against him for allegedly threatening and abusing Bharatiya Janata Party workers and a day after he predicted the state's ruling party would fare poorly in the Lok Sabha elections.
  • Adityanath also removed all members appointed to various boards in Uttar Pradesh on Rajbhar's recommendation.
  • Rajbhar has considerable clout in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
  • He has been upset over the denial of seats of his choice, and fielded 39 candidates in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh phases of the Lok Sabha elections.
  • The departments that Rajbhar headed have been given to BJP MLA and minister of state Anil Rajbhar.

Mueen Pakistan's New Envoy to India

  •  Pakistan's ambassador to France, Mueen-ul-Haq, has been named the country's new High Commissioner to India.
  • Mueen is a career diplomat and previously served as the chief of protocol at the foreign office.
  • The post of High Commissioner to India fell vacant after Sohail Mehmood was appointed the foreign secretary in March 2019.
  • Prime Minister Imran Khan approved the appointments of over two dozen ambassadors in various countries.

IL&FS Engineering Appoints New CEO

  •  The board of IL&FS Engineering and Construction Company Ltd. appointed Kazim Raza Khan as its chief executive officer.
  • Mr. Khan was appointed as the manager and key managerial personnel of the company on December 24, 2018.

Jasbir Scripts UK Council History

  •  Jasbir Jaspal, who was elected from Heath Town in Wolverhampton in the May local elections, has been appointed to the council's cabinet by the new leader, Labour's Ian Brookfield, making her the first Sikh woman to hold the post.
  • Jasbir, who has been a councillor in the City of Wolverhampton Council since 2012, is responsible for policy areas that include resilience and business continuity, community safety, healthy ageing and healthy life expectancy.

Maharashtra ATS Gets New Chief

  •  The Maharashtra government appointed senior IPS officer Deven Bharti as the chief of the Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) of the state. Bharti, a 1994 batch officer, was currently posted as the Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police.
  • Current ATS chief Atulchandra Kulkarni was transferred as the ADG of Crime Investigation Department (CID), Pune.

Officers Named for Tri-service Divisions

  •  The three triservice agencies to handle the critical modern warfare domains of special operations, cyberspace and space are taking shape, with two star officers being appointed to head them.
  • Maj Gen A K Dhingra, from the 1 Para-Special Forces unit, will be the first commander of the Special Operations Division, while Rear Admiral Mohit Gupta will head the new Defence Cyber Agency.
  • Air Vice Marshal S P Dharkar will head the Defence Space Agency, though his name has not been officially announced yet.
  • These three agencies, which will become fully operational by October-November, are truncated versions of the original proposal to have full-fledged commands under three-star officers to handle challenges in space, cyberspace and clandestine warfare.

Nepali Sherpa Kami Rita Breaks Own Record

  •  Kami Rita, a Nepalese Sherpa, smashed his own world record when he scaled Mount Everest for a whopping 23rd time. 
  • The 49-year-old Kami Rita had climbed the Everest for the 22nd time last year, breaking the then record of 21 Everest ascents set by Sherpas Apa and Phurba Tashi in 2017. Since then, Apa and Phurba have retired.
  • The 2019 Everest climbing season began with eight high-altitude Nepalese climbing experts eyeing the highest peak in the world. Kami Rita has already scaled most of the peaks that are above the 8,000-metre altitude level, including K2, Cho Oyu, Lhotse and Annapurna.
  • Kami Rita has been climbing the Everest since 1994. He missed out in 1995 when his client fell sick on the way to the summit following a deadly avalanche.

Yes Bank Gets Additional Director

  •  The Reserve Bank of India appointed its former Deputy Governor R. Gandhi as an additional director on the board of Yes Bank with immediate effect.
  • The appointment is for two years, that is till May 13, 2021.
  • Yes Bank had posted its first-ever quarterly loss of Rs. 1,507 crore in the March quarter under its new MD & CEO Ravneet Gill.
  • Mr. Gill took charge on March 1 after Rana Kapoor's term was not extended by the RBI for three years, as approved by the board.

Mayor of Durban Arrested

  •  The Mayor of South Africa's third largest city, Durban, was arrested and charged with corruption, the latest in scandals plaguing the ruling ANC .
  • Zandile Gumede who has led Durban for the past three years, faces charges of embezzling public funds and money laundering.

Vinay Dube Resigns

  •  Grounded carrier Jet Airways Chief Executive Officer Vinay Dube resigned from the post, a day after its deputy chief executive and chief financial officer Amit Agarwal quit the company.
  • An Indian-American, Dube had joined Jet Airways in August 2017 after serving various roles at Delta Airlines, Sabre Inc and American Airlines in the US, Europe and Asia.
  • Dube had stepped in the position after almost 15 months of the departure of then chief executive Crammer Ball.
