Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed has been nominated as the country's parliamentary Speaker.
Mr. Nasheed was unanimously chosen to head the People's Majlis, or the Parliament, by his Maldivian Democratic Party.
Stephen Ravindra New Intelligence Chief
Chief Minister-designate Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has zeroed in on Stephen Ravindra, who is at present working as Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Hyderabad range, for the post of Intelligence chief.
Mr. Jagan's choice assumes significance in the wake of intense competition among top police officials for the post which is considered as eyes and ears of the Chief Minister.
This is against the backdrop of the controversy triggered by the transfer of A. B. Venkateswara Rao, who was serving a Additional Director General (Intelligence) by the Election Commission just before the general elections.
The TDP government even filed a petition in the High Court challenging the EC's decision.
BJP Nominates Kamakhya Prasad Tasa for RS Berth
The Bharatiya Janata Party named its former Lok Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa for the Rajya Sabha election in Assam, scheduled to be held on June 7.
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Santiuse Kujur (both from the Congress) will complete their terms in the upper house next month, and the BJP-led alliance is expected to win both the seats.
In 126-member Assam assembly, the BJP has 61 MLAs while its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People's Front, have 14 and 12 MLAs, respectively.
The BJP, however, has not named a candidate for the second seat, and is expected to support the AGP candidate.
First Black Female Head of Cambridge College
The 500-year-old Jesus College in the University of Cambridge has elected its first woman and first black as its Master, reflecting change in the university that recently launched a study into its historical links with slavery.
Barbados-born Sonita Alleyne, 51, an alumna of the university, will take up the role from October 1 as the 42nd Master of the college, which was founded in 1496.
A businesswoman and entrepreneur, Alleyne has held various roles, including on the BBC Trust.
Alleyne, who studied philosophy at the university, was elected in the context continuing concern over the lack of diversity of students being admitted to the university.
There have also been student led campaigns in various countries to decolonise education.
Jesus College notes in its announcement that Alleyne has championed diversity and inclusivity in her previous roles.
Punjab Congress Chief Tenders Resignation
Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar has tendered his resignation from the post following the defeat in the Lok Sabha election from Gurdaspur.
In his resignation letter sent to party president Rahul Gandhi, Mr. Jakhar pointed out that despite support from him, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, he failed to retain his seat.
Mr. Jakhar was defeated by BJP's actor-turned-politician Sunny Deol.
Capt. Amarinder Singh said that Mr. Jakhar's resignation was unnecessary, given what he termed an impressive performance of the party in the State.
Sajid Javid Enters Race to Replace May
U.K. Home Secretary Sajid Javid became the ninth candidate to enter the race to replace Theresa May as Prime Minister, promising to deliver Brexit after repeated delays.
Referring to the drubbing Ms. May's Conservatives received in European Parliament elections, Mr. Javid said that the new party leader had to restore voters' trust.
Sikkim Gets New Chief Minister after 25 Years
Prem Singh Tamang, popular as P. S. Golay, became the sixth Chief Minister of Sikkim as he was sworn in by governor Ganga Prasad at Gangtok's Paljore stadium.
It marked the end of the 25-year rule of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) and its leader Pawan Chamling, who holds the record of the longest serving chief minister in any Indian state by administering Sikkim for 8,932 days.
Immediately after being sworn in, the new Chief Minister declared a five-day week for the state government employees.

Patnaik be Sworn in for Fifth Consecutive Term
Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal invited Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal president Naveen Patnaik are set to form the next government in the State.
The swearing-in is scheduled to be held on May 29 at the Exhibition Ground.
Set to be sworn in as the Chief Minister for a record fifth consecutive term, Mr. Patnaik met the Governor and staked claim to form the government after being elected the leader of the BJD Legislature Party.
Ashok Chavan Offers to Resign
Amid clamour for the complete restructuring of the grand old party following the drubbing in the Lok Sabha elections, Maharashtra Congress president Ashok Chavan has offered to step down from the post.
Chavan, who lost the Lok Sabha elections from Nanded, submitted his resignation to Congress president Rahul Gandhi.
Chavan's offer came on the day the Congress Working Committee (CWC) authorised Gandhi to overhaul and restructure the party organisation following the poll debacle.
Prior to this, three senior Congress leaders from Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Karnataka had sent in their resignations to Gandhi owning responsibility for the party's dismal performance.
Uttar Pradesh chief Raj Babbar offered to resign after the Congress.
HK Patil, who was tasked to oversee the Karnataka Congress campaign in December, also put in his papers.
Odisha Congress chief Niranjan Patnaik too offered to step down from his post after the Congress won just 9 assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat.

Jagan Elected YSRCLP Leader
After his spectacular victory, YSR Congress Party president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy was unanimously elected leader of the YSR Congress Legislature Party (YSRCLP).
At the first YSRCLP meeting held at Tadepalli, a one-line resolution was adopted to elect him the leader.
Later, YSRCP legislators Botcha Satyanarayana and others called on Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan in Hyderabad and informed him of the election of Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
According to a release, the swearing-in will be held on May 30 at IGMC Stadium in Vijayawada.
Naresh Goyal Stopped from Travelling Abroad
Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal and his wife Anita were stopped from leaving the country due to a lookout circular issued by the Union Home Ministry.
Goyal was offloaded from a Dubai-bound Emirates flight after the aircraft was called back to the terminal.
Airport officials said that immigration officials called the flight back and offloaded the couple along with their checked-in luggage.
Goyal and his wife had resigned from the board of Jet Airways in March 2019 and the airline had announced temporary suspension of its operations in April.
Thailand's ex-PM Tinsulanonda Passes Away
Former Prime Minister and close adviser to Thailand's revered royals Prem Tinsulanonda died aged 98. Mr. Tinsulanonda was a top aide to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and helped cement the unshakeable bond between the monarchy and the military.
Prem Tinsulanonda was a Thai military officer and politician who served as Prime Minister of Thailand from 3 March 1980 to 4 August 1988, during which time he was credited with ending a communist insurgency and presiding over accelerating economic growth.
He was also the statesman of Thailand. As president of the Privy Council, he served as Regent of Thailand from the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadejon 13 October 2016, until the 1 December 2016 proclamation of Vajiralongkorn as King.
At the age of 98, Prem was the longest-living Thai Prime Minister.

Chandrani Murmu is the Youngest-ever MP
Until a few months ago, Meet Chandrani Murmu was unknown and was hunting for a job.
Her aim was to become a probationary officer in a bank or an assistant section officer in the Odisha government or a mechanical engineer in a private company. But she has become an MP.
Chandrani Murmu won the Keonjhar Lok Sabha seat (reserved for Scheduled Tribes) on Biju Janata Dal (BJD) ticket by a margin of 66,203 votes.
She will enter the Lok Sabha as the youngest member in the Lower House's history.
Until now, the record was been held by Dushyant Chautala, who, at 26, represented the Hisar seat in Haryana in the 16th Lok Sabha.

First Woman Pilot of IAF to be Qualified
Flight Lieutenant Bhawana Kanth became the first woman pilot of the IAF to be qualified to undertake combat missions on a fighter jet. Flight Lieutenant Kanth completed the operational syllabus for carrying out combat missions on Mig-21 Bison aircraft during day time.
