Thailand's junta Chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha was elected as the kingdom's first civilian Prime Minister since the 2014 coup he led, in a vote by a parliament stacked with appointed allies of the conservative, arch-royalist army.
Prayut swept aside his sole challenger Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit who led the anti-military bloc, garnering 500 votes to his rival's 244.

Uttarakhand minister Prakash Pant died in the US after a prolonged illness.
Pant was Uttarakhand's minister for parliamentary affairs and finance besides being in charge of a host of other portfolios.
He was a BJP MLA from Pithoragarh in the state assembly and was considered one of the most important and knowledgable members of Rawat's cabinet.
Actor Dinyar Contractor Passes Away
Veteran actor and theatre legend Dinyar Contractor, who appeared in films such as Baadshah and Khiladi, passed away. He was 79.
Dinyar Contractor was a stage actor, comedian and Bollywood/Tollywood actor.
He acted in Gujarati theatre and Hindi theatre, as well as Hindi movies. He started acting at school and began his professional career in 1966.

Mohapatra Appointed as Chief of IMD
Renowned scientist Mrutyunjay Mohapatra was appointed as the chief of India Meteorological Department (IMD) for a period of five years.
He will assume charge of the post on or after August 1, 2019.
Mohapatra is affectionately known as 'cyclone man of India' for having accurately predicted the path of ferocious cyclonic storm Phailin. He had joined the IMD in 1992.
A Ph D in Physics from Bhubaneswar University, Mohapatra has received many national and international awards including the Young Scientist Award of Ministry of Earth Sciences and Achievers Award from the IMD for his research and service in the field of atmospheric sciences.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange should not be extradited to Sweden for a rape investigation, but can still be questioned in the case while he is imprisoned in Britain, a Swedish court has ruled.
He would face a maximum of four years in prison if convicted of rape.

Uttarakhand's Youngest Woman to Scale Mt. Everest
The youngest woman from Uttarakhand to scale Mount Kanchenjunga, 24-year-old Sheetal Raj from Pithoragarh has now become the youngest woman from the state to climb the highest peak in the world, the Mount Everest.
Now, Sheetal plans to organise all women expeditions now. She feels that by conducting such expeditions, women and locals will also get employment opportunities.
Her initial focus is to cover peaks of Uttarakhand and give boost to tourism opportunities in the state.
She also wants to climb the seven highest summits and the 14 summits (peaks with height of 8,000 m and above) in the world.
Ajit Doval to Continue as NSA
Ajit Doval will continue as India's National Security Advisor (NSA) in the second term of the Narendra Modi government.
The government has also upgraded him from Minister of State (MoS) rank to a Cabinet position in view of his contribution over the last five years in the security of the country.
His appointment will be for five years.

Singh is a recipient of Vishisht Seva Medal in 2011 and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2016 for his exemplary service to the nation.
He is an alumnus of UP Sainik School Lucknow and the prestigious National Defence Academy which he joined in July 1979.
P.K. Dharmalingam Passes Away
Former Ranji Trophy cricketer and renowned coach P. K. Dharmalingam passed away. He was 84.
Dharmalingam played 29 First Class matches for Madras and Services before turning to coaching. He was one of the pioneers in conducting summer camps in Chennai and went on to forge a successful coaching career. He had coached the Tamil Nadu women's team.
Dharmalingam was an attacking batsman and also bowled leg-spin, but was better known for his fielding prowess.

Brij Mohan Khaitan Passes Away
Industrialist Brij Mohan Khaitan, who hogged the limelight by acquiring the Indian business of Union Carbide in the 1990s, passed away.
Mr. Khaitan, 92, was the patriarch of the Williamson Magor Group that deals in dry-cell battery, tea and engineering services.
Mr. Khaitan got the Lifetime Achievement Award from the ICC in 2013.
Gehlot Rejects Lalchand Kataria's Resignation
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot rejected the resignation of Agriculture Minister Lalchand Kataria, who had taken the decision in the wake of the Congress's dismal showing in the Lok Sabha election.
As per reports, Mr. Gehlot rejected the resignation and asked Mr. Kataria to continue in office and play his role in good governance.
