International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction - 13 October

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction was started in 1989, after a call by the United Nations General Assembly for a day to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction.
Held every 13 October, the day celebrates how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of reining in the risks that they face.
2019 Theme: Reduce disaster damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services
The 2019 edition continues as part of the "Sendai Seven" campaign, centred on the seven targets of the Sendai Framework.
This year will focus on Target (d) of the Sendai Framework: "Substantially reduce disaster damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services, among them health and education facilities, including through developing their resilience by 2030."

Union Minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti Inaugurates SARAS Aajeevika Mela

Minister of State for Rural Development, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti inaugurated SARAS Aajeevika Mela, at India Gate Lawns in New Delhi.
The fair will run till 23rd of October (2019).
SARAS Aajeevika Mela is a testimony of Nari-Shakti, as lakhs of poor women through rural women Self Help Groups, SHG, are transforming their lives and transforming rural India.
This mela is a true example of women empowerment as over 200 stalls have been set-up by nearly 500 rural SHG craftswomen from 29 States and Union Territories.
These groups will show-case varied range of products like handicrafts, handlooms, natural food products and a food court with regional cuisines.
The objective of this Mela is to bring the rural women Self Help Groups formed with support of Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission, under one platform to showcase their skills, sell their products and help them build linkages with bulk buyers.

World Migratory Bird Day 2019 - Protect Birds: Be the Solution to Plastic Pollution

Every year, World Migratory Bird Day presents an annual theme aiming to raise awareness of issues affecting migratory birds and to inspire people and organizations around the world to take measures for their conservation.
The Day is celebrated on second Saturday in May and October. In 2019, this Day will be celebrated on 11 May and 12 October.
The WMBD 2019 is observed with Theme: "Protect Birds: Be the Solution to Plastic Pollution!"
It aims to put spotlight on negative impact of plastic pollution on migratory birds and their habitats.

International Day of the Girl.

Since 2012, 11 October has been marked as the International Day of the Girl. The day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls' empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights.
2019 Theme — GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable
Nearly 25 years ago, some 30,000 women and men from nearly 200 countries arrived in Beijing, China for the Fourth World Conference on Women, determined to recognize the rights of women and girls as human rights.
The conference culminated in the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action: the most comprehensive policy agenda for the empowerment of women.
In the years following, women pressed this agenda forward, leading global movements on issues ranging from sexual and reproductive health rights to equal pay.
More girls today are attending and completing school, fewer are getting married or becoming mothers while still children, and more are gaining the skills they need to excel in the future world of work.

World Obesity Day

World Obesity Day is observed globally on 11 October with the view of promoting practical solutions to end the global obesity crisis.
It is organised by the World Obesity Federation, a non-profit body which is in official relations with the World Health Organization and is a collaborating body on the Lancet Commission on Obesity.
World Obesity states that its aim is to "lead and drive global efforts to reduce, prevent and treat obesity."
The first World Obesity Day took place in 2015.
The second took place in 2016 and focused on childhood obesity, aligning with the WHO Commission report on Ending Childhood Obesity.

National Postal Week

The Department of Posts will celebrate the National Postal Week between October 9 and 15 (2019) to highlight its role and contribution in the lives of people.
The department will also celebrate the World Post Day on October 9 to commemorate the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in the Swiss capital Berne.

World Sight Day 2019

World Sight Day—the most important advocacy and communications day in the eye health calendar—is on 10 October 2019. This year's call to action: Vision First!
More than a billion people cannot see well, because they don't have access to glasses. Over 3 out of 4 of the world's vision impaired are avoidably so.

World Mental Health Day - 10 October

World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health.
The Day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide.

Statue of Unity set to host Narendra Modi's event

Sardar Patel's tall Statue of Unity over the Narmada in Kevadia, Gujarat, is set to host another high-profile event of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a series of programmes planned by the Modi government from Deepavali to October 31, 2019 the freedom fighter's birth anniversary.
The programmes planned by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) include bringing together all probationer IAS, IPS, IFS and IRS officers, top secretaries of the Government of India, World Bank President David Malpass and others.

World Post Day

World Post day happens each year on October 9, the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which started in 1874 in Switzerland.
The UPU was the start of the global communications revolution, introducing the ability to write to others all over the world.
World Post Day started in 1969. Since then, countries all over the world take part in celebrations to highlight the importance of the postal service. Many things happen on this day.
Post offices in some countries hold special stamp collection exhibitions; there are open days at postal measures and there are workshops on postal history.
The UPU organises an international letter writing competition for young people.

First-ever India International Cooperative trade fair to be held in Delhi

The first-ever India International Cooperatives Trade Fair (IICTF) will be held at Pragati Maidan from October 11, 2019.
The ministries of Agriculture and Commerce and Industry have organised a three-day India International Cooperative trade fair from October 11 to 13, 2019. In addition to many co-operatives, more than 35 countries will be taking part in the fair.
The fair has been jointly organised by National Cooperative Development Corporation in association with the Bangkok-based international organisation NEDAC and leading organisations in India like NAFED, APEDA and ITPO.
In addition, six state governments and Union Territories are partners of IICTF. Bangladesh is also a partner country in the event.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October

The Breast Cancer Awareness Month, marked in countries across the world every October, helps to increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of this disease.
There are about 1.38 million new cases and 458 000 deaths from breast cancer each year (IARC Globocan, 2008).
Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women worldwide, both in the developed and developing countries. In low- and middle-income countries the incidence has been rising up steadily in the last years due to increase in life expectancy, increase urbanization and adoption of western lifestyles.

WTO Hosted First World Cotton Day Celebrations In Geneva

World Trade Organisation, WTO hosted the first World Cotton Day (WCD) celebrations in Geneva. This event stems from the application by the Cotton-4 countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali) to the United Nations General Assembly for its official recognition of a World Cotton Day, reflecting the importance of cotton as a global commodity.
Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani represented India in the five-day event of World Cotton Day being observed at Geneva.
The plenary session was attended by heads of states, heads of international organisations and executives from the private sector.
A cotton exhibition is also being held where TEXPROCIL, Handloom Export Promotion Council (HEPC), Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) and the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) will be setting up their stalls.

IAF Prepares To Conquer The Sky On Air Force Day 2019

The Indian Air Force (IAF) celebrated its 87th birthday with a spectacular air display that will include vintage and modern transport aircraft and frontline fighters.
The air display commenced with flag-bearing sky divers of the famous Akash Ganga team dropping out of an AN-32 aircraft in their colourful canopies.
C-17 Globemaster III, Jaguar and Mirage 2000 are among the top aircraft that will take part in the grand flypast on the occasion.
The IAF will showcase its Chinook transport and Apache attack helicopters for the first time since they were acquired from the US in the last few months.
A Russian-origin Sukhoi-30MKI will perform a manoeuvre at the end of the event.

Jaishankar Inaugurates Tele-Education, Tele-Medicine Projects For African Countries

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar inaugurated tele-education and tele-medicine project for African countries in New Delhi.
The EAM inaugurated e-VidyaBharti and e-ArogyaBharti (tele-education and tele-medicine project) for African countries on the occasion of the 55th Anniversary of India's flagship capacity building programme - Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC).
The project(s) will enable African students to access premier Indian education through the comforts of their homes and offer Indian medical expertise to African doctors and patients alike.

Jal Shakti Ministry launches Ganga Aamantran Abhiyan

The newly constituted Jal Shakti Ministry has launched Ganga Aamantran Abhiyan, a unique open-water rafting and kayaking expedition on the Ganga River to create awareness on Ganga rejuvenation and water conservation.
Ganga Aamantran Abhiyan will be held from October 10 to November 11, 2019.
The expedition will start from Devprayag and end at Ganga Sagar, covering the whole stretch of 2500 km of the Ganga River.
The Minister of Jal Shakti, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat launched the Abhiyan on October 7, 2019 and he would be participating in the event as well.
The Minister is expected to lead from the front. He will flag off the expedition and be a part of it from Devprayag to Rishikesh.
