World Day Of War Orphans Day

  •  The World Day of War Orphans was celebrated on 6 January 2020. The day is observed every year. The day enables the global Communities to recognize the plight of a, particularly vulnerable group. 
  • Aim: The day aims to address the war orphans as it has become a growing worldwide humanitarian and social crisis. The day ensures to voice out the predicament of war orphans. It highlights that children growing up in orphanage experience emotional, social and physical handicaps. 
  • War orphans: The World Day of War Orphans was initiated by the French organization, SOS Enfants en Detresses. 

'Advantage Maharashtra Expo 2020' To Be Inaugurated Today

  •  Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will inaugurate Advantage Maharashtra expo 2020 in Aurangabad.
  • The four-day mega industrial exhibition has been organised by the Marathwada Association Zf Small Scale Industries and Agriculture (MASSIA).
  • Growth of Marathwada industries in technology and innovation and the products produced and exported from the region will be showcased in this exhibition.
  • Convener of the expo Sunil Kirdak informed that over 450 exhibitors from within the state as well as outside the state are participating in this exhibition. He added that conferences and seminars will also be held during the event.

Kochi To Host Global Investors Meet On 9-10 Jan

 Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate a two-day ASCEND 2020 global investors meet in Kochi on January 9, 2020.
Showcasing 100-plus projects across nine sessions that include six panel discussions, the event will seek to invigorate development in sectors such as petrochemicals, agro & food-processing, defence, life sciences, aeropolis, tourism & hospitality, ports and harbour, fisheries, infrastructure, mobility development, logistics and electronic hardware. Of the projects proposed to be taken up based on a feasibility study by KPMG, 18 will be large scale with an investment of more than Rs 100 crores.

Kochi to host global meet on marine ecosystem

  • Eminent marine scientists, oceanographers, fisheries researchers and marine biotechnologists from across the globe are expected to participate in the third international symposium on marine ecosystems – challenges and opportunities (MECOS-3) in Kochi from January 7 to 10.
  • Organised by the Marine Biological Association of India, MECOS-3 will serve as a platform for discussions on a range of topics, including the impact of the climate crisis on marine ecosystems and an unusual warming of the Arabian Sea.

Maharashtra CM extends his greetings for Journalists' Day

  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray extended his greetings for the Journalists' Day which is being celebrated on 6th of January every year in the state in the memory of late thespian journalist Balshashtri Jambhekar.
  • The media plays a very important role in the socio-economic development and its initiative helps the government to know about many of public issues.
  • He added that journalists should keep on bringing more social issues for the well-being of the poorer and general public in the state. The Chief Minister assured that the government will always take a positive role on various issues related to journalists.

Transport department in Maharashtra to observe 31st Road Safety Week from 11th-17th Jan

  • Maharashtra government's transport department will observe the 31st edition of Road Safety Week from January 11-17.
  • According to an official, several activities like women's two-wheeler rally, eye check-up and medical camps for drivers, workshops, social media campaigns, and road safety programmes in schools, will be conducted for advocacy and promotion of road safety.
  • Transport secretary Ashish Kumar will chair a meeting next week to review preparations for the Road Safety Week. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has assured financial help of 10 crore rupees to conduct mass safety campaigns.

PM Modi kicks off 107th Indian Science Congress event in Bengaluru

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi  inaugurated the 107th Indian Science Congress (ISC 2020) in this tech city amid tight security in the presence of galaxy of top scientists, Nobel Laureates, dignitaries and students from across the country and the world over.The convention will see the participation of over 15,000 delegates, including 8,000 students from across the country and 74 scientists from abroad. With 26 plenary sessions to be held concurrently, it will see over 1,500 papers presented across 14 fields of science and technology.There will also be a 'Women's Science Congress', 'Children's Science Congress', 'Science Communicator's Meet', and 'Science Exhibition: Pride of India'. Entry to the exhibition will be free from January 4 to 7.
  • UAS, Bengaluru has developed a comprehensive mobile application, ISC 2020 UASB, to help those attending to navigate the event.

World Braille Day

  • World Braille Day is celebrated every year on January 4th because it's Louis Braille's birthday. He's the inventor of Braille. Louis was born in 1809 in France and became blind after a childhood accident. But, he quickly mastered his new way of living. When Louise was only 15 years old, he created a reading and writing system based on Charles Barbier's night writing system. We know Louise's system today as braille.
  • Braille is a tactile representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots to represent each letter and number, and even musical, mathematical and scientific symbols.
  • The date for the event was chosen by the United Nations General Assembly via a proclamation in November 2018. The first World Braille Day was celebrated on January 4, 2019.
