Vigilance Awareness Week

The Vigilance Awareness Week is held between October 27, 2020 and November 2, 2020. The week is celebrated to affirm the commitment towards promotion of probity and integrity in public life through citizen participation. This year, the Vigilance Awareness Week is to be held under the theme Satarak Bharat, Samridh Bharat. It means Vigilant India, Prosperous India.
On October 27, 2020, PM Modi is to inaugurate National Conference on Vigilance and Anti-Corruption. The conference was held under the theme Vigilance Awareness Week.
The Conference is being organised by the Central Bureau of Investigation. It is to be held between October 27, 2020 and November 2, 2020. The conference will discuss capacity building and training, challenges in investigation in foreign jurisdiction, preventive vigilance, prevention of bank frauds, effective auditing, cyber crimes, last amendments to the Prevention of Corruption Act Effective Auditing, prevention of bank frauds.

Kati Bihu Festival in Assam

Kati Bihu is celebrated in Assam and is one of the three Bihu festivals. The Kati Bihu is also called as Kangali Bihu, the festival of the poor (the word "Kongal" means "poor"). It is celebrated in mid-October when the crops are at growing stage and the granaries of the farmers are empty.
Bihu is associated with agriculture and rice. On Kati Bihu festival day, earthen lamps are lit in households. During ancient times, earthen lamps were lit all around the paddy crops to captivate the insects. Therefore, it acted as a natural insectide. In the evening, cows and bulls are fed with food made from rice items and this is called pitha.
There are three different types of Bihu festivals namely Bohag Bihu, Kati Bihu and Bhogali Bihu.
Bohag Bihu: It is also known as Rongali Bihu. The most popular Bihu celebrates the beginning of the Assamese New Year and the arriving of spring. The Bohag Bihu is celebrated in middle of April month. Bohag Bihu marks the first day of the Hindu solar calendar. The folk songs related with the Bohag Bihu are known as Bihugeets or Bihu songs.
Kati Bihu festival is also celebrated in Bengal, Manipur, Mithila, Orissa, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Kerala though called by various names.

United Nations Day

October 24 is observed as United Nations Day and came into existence on 24 October, 1945.
The year 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the United Nations and its founding Charter. This anniversary comes in a time of great disruption for the world, compounded by an unprecedented global health crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with severe economic and social impacts. But it is also a reminder that times of struggle can become an opportunity for positive change and transformation.
To commemorate the 75 years of the United Nations, Member States held a high-level event on 21 September 2020, where they reaffirmed and recognized that our challenges are interconnected and can only be addressed through reinvigorated multilateralism.

World Development Information Day

In 1972, the United Nations General Assembly decided to institute a World Development Information Day coinciding with United Nations Day on October 24. The General Assembly had the object of drawing the attention of world public opinion each year to development problems and the necessity of strengthening international co-operation to solve them.
The day was further recognised as the date on which the International Development Strategy for the Second Nations Development Decade was adopted in 1970.

Mole Day

Mole Day is an unofficial holiday celebrated among chemists, chemistry students and chemistry enthusiasts on October 23, between 6:02 a.m. and 6:02 p.m., making the date 6:02 10/23 in the American style of writing dates. The time and date are derived from the Avogadro number, which is approximately 6.02×1023, defining the number of particles (atoms or molecules) in one mole (mol) of substance, one of the seven base SI units.
Mole Day originated in an article in The Science Teacher in the early 1980s. Inspired by this article, Maurice Oehler, now a retired high school chemistry teacher from Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, founded the National Mole Day Foundation (NMDF) on May 15, 1991.
Many high schools around the United States, South Africa, Australia, and Canada celebrate Mole Day as a way to get their students interested in chemistry, with various activities often related to chemistry or moles.
The American Chemical Society sponsors National Chemistry Week, which occurs from the Sunday through Saturday during which October 23 falls. This makes Mole Day an integral part of National Chemistry Week.

Police Commemoration Day

The National Police Commemoration Day is observed every year on October 21 to pay homage to the 10 policemen who were killed in an ambush by Chinese troops in 1959 in Ladakh's Hot Spring area.
In the chilling winter at a height of 10,500 feet, it was the CRPF that bore the brunt of the first onslaught of the Chinese aggression at Hot Spring in Ladakh on October 21, 1959, when a small CRPF patrol was ambushed and heavily outnumbered by the Chinese army.
The Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police of States and Union Territories held in January 1960 decided that in order to commemorate the exceptional act of Valour by the men of CRPF, October 21 will be observed as 'Police Commemoration Day' across the country.
Since the year 2012, the Police Commemoration Day Parade is being held at the National level at the Police Memorial, Chanakyapuri.
