World Standards Day

  • World Standards Day is an international day celebrated internationally each year on 14 October.
  • The day honours the efforts of the thousands of experts who develop voluntary standards within standards development organizations such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), International Organisation for Standardization (ISO), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
  • The aim of World Standards Day is to raise awareness among regulators, industry and consumers as to the importance of standardisation to the global economy.
  • World Standards Day 2020 is themed "Protecting the planet with standards".

Indian to Attend Seventh Justice Ministers Meet of SCO

  • On October 16, 2020, the Union Minister of law and Justice Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad is to attend the seventh meeting of ministers of justice of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
  • The ministers during the meet will share the knowledge on creating conducive environment to promote dispute resolution mechanism, forensic activities and other legal services. Also, the ministers will discuss on the action plan of the working groups of experts on legal services and forensic activities.
  • Justice ministers from the member countries of the organisation such as China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, Pakistan are to participate in the meet.
  • SCO is a part of India's policy of "multi alignments". RATS is regional Anti-terror structure of SCO. Accessing information and intelligent from RATS will help India learn about non-Pakistan centred Counter Terrorism.

UN International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction

  • The International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) is an international day that encourages every citizen and government to take part in building more disaster-resilient communities and nations.
  • The United Nations General Assembly designated October 13 as the International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction as part of its proclamation of the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction. 
  • In 2002, by a further resolution, the General Assembly decided to maintain the annual observance as a vehicle to promote a global culture of natural disaster reduction, including prevention, mitigation, and preparedness.

China Commemorates Birth Anniversary of Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis

  • China commemorated the 110th birth anniversary of Indian doctor Dwarkanath Kotnis who served in the country during the Chinese revolution headed by Mao Zedong and the World War II.
  • Dr. Kotnis, who hailed from Sholapur in Maharashtra, came to China in 1938 as part of a five-member team of doctors sent by the Indian National Congress to help the Chinese during the World War II. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1942 and died the same year at the age of 32.
  • The Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), an official body of the Chinese government, held an online commemorative event along with the Director of the Centre for South Asian Studies of the Peking University.

International Girl Child Day

  • International Day of the Girl Child is an international observance day declared by the United Nations; it is also called the Day of Girls and the International Day of the Girl.
  • October 11, 2012, was the first Day of the Girl Child. The observation supports more opportunity for girls and increases awareness of gender inequality faced by girls worldwide based upon their gender.
  • International Day of Girl Child 2020 is very special. This year the theme of International Day of the Girl Child is "My voice, our equal future". The theme focuses on how girls globally are leading the way.

World Mental Health Day

  • World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilising efforts in support of mental health.
  • The Day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide.
  •  It was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization with members and contacts in more than 150 countries.

National Postal Day

  • National Postal Day is celebrated on October 10 every year to commemorate the role played by the Indian postal department in over 150 years.
  • Indian postal celebration is an extension of World Post Day. 
  • In this world of e-mails and online messaging, writing letters has become something which we rarely do. But, some 2 decades back, writing letters was an important form of communication. Since phones were also not as common as they are now, writing letters to each other used to be the main way to keep in touch.
