Novak Djokovic Clinches Sixth Year-end No. 1 Ranking

  • Novak Djokovic has sealed the year-end men`s world number one tennis ranking for the sixth time and levels with childhood hero Pete Sampras after closest rival Rafael Nadal opted against playing in the ATP Tour event in Sofia next week.
  • Spain`s 20-time Grand Slam champion Nadal, ranked second, was the only player who had a chance to stop the Serbian from finishing as the top-ranked player in 2020.
  • During the year, Djokovic won the ATP Cup in January before picking up a record-extending eight Australian Open Grand Slam in Melbourne. He also won the Cincinnati Masters and a record 36th ATP Masters title in Rome.

Rafael Nadal Earns His 1,000th Win

  • Becoming only the fourth man to reach 1,000 match wins should have drawn deafening cheers and a standing ovation for tennis great Rafael Nadal. Instead, he reached his milestone amid a cathedral-like silence in a 20,000-seater stadium left completely empty because of the coronavirus pandemic. 
  • There was only a fist-bump from, after Nadal defeated Feliciano Lopez 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 in a subdued atmosphere.
  • Nadal joined Jimmy Connors (1,274), Roger Federer (1,242) and Ivan Lendl (1,068) as the only men's 1,000-club members since the Open era began in 1968. 

Warner Achieves This Impressive Feat

  • SunRisers Hyderabad skipper David Warner became the first player in history to score 500 or more runs in 6 consecutive seasons of IPL. Warner finished the IPL 2020 league stage with 529 runs from 14 games.
  • Warner scored 692, 641, 848, 562 and 528 runs in his previous five IPL seasons, respectively. It must be noted that Warner was banned from IPL 2018 for his involvement in the ball tampering scandal against South Africa.

Shane Watson Announces Retirement from Competitive Cricket

  • Top Australian all-rounder Shane Watson announced his retirement from competitive cricket following his team's Chennai Super Kings' exit from the Indian Premier League.
  • He retired from international cricket in 2016 and bid adieu to the Australian Big Bash league last year (2019).
  • Watson played 59 Tests, 190 ODIs and 58 T20Is at the international level.
  • A sought-after player in the T20 format, Watson has 3874 runs in 145 IPL games with four hundreds and 21 fifties. 

Dinesh Karthik Becomes wicket-keeper with Most Catches in IPL History

  • Kolkata Knight Riders' wicket keeper Dinesh Karthik reached a personal milestone.
  • Karthik overtook MS Dhoni to become the new record holder for the most number of catches in IPL history.
  • He took his 110th catch against Rajasthan, leaving behind the legendary Dhoni, who was leading the race with 109 catches.
  • Parthiv Patel is next on the list with 66 catches followed by Naman Ojha, who has 65 to his name.

Karnataka Government Bestows Ekalavya Award on K. L. Rahul

  • Indian cricketer and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) captain K. L. Rahul took to Twitter to thank the Karnataka Government for giving him the Ekalavya Award.
  • The Ekalavya Award is given by the Karnataka state government for outstanding performance in sports.
  • Kannur Lokesh Rahul (born 18 April 1992), commonly known as KL Rahul, is an Indian international cricketer who plays for Karnataka in domestic cricket.

Mercedes Clinch Seventh Consecutive Constructors' Title

  • Mercedes became the first team to win seven successive Formula One constructors` titles as Lewis Hamilton celebrated a record-extending 93rd career win at Imola to stand on the brink of a seventh drivers` crown.
  • Hamilton came back from third place at the end of the opening lap to lead Finnish team mate Valtteri Bottas in a Mercedes one-two at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at the Italian circuit.
