FIFA World Cup Qualifier

  • Argentina conceded a first-half penalty but recovered to secure a 1-1 draw against Paraguay in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in Buenos Aires.
  • Angel Romero scored his third goal in three internationals when he rolled home the penalty for Paraguay midway through the half after Lucas Martinez Quarta was adjudged to have brought down Miguel Almiron.
  • Nicolas Gonzalez equalised for Argentina four minutes before half-time when he bulleted a header home from a Giovani Lo Celso corner kick.

Cash Crunch Blocks Archery Resumption

  • The Archery Association of India (AAI) is feeling the pinch as it bids to resume competitions. The competition calendar has been decided and a few state associations are willing to host events, but financial issues and an expected rise in expenses due to Covid-19 protocols is posing a big challenge.
  • As a norm, AAI budgets around Rs. 30 lakh to host the Nationals. However, the Covid safety protocol, which entails testing, sanitisation, and separate rooms for participants, would see a rise in expenses, by up to Rs. 10 lakh. AAI, which is currently not recognised by the Sports Ministry, is struggling to cope with the costs.

Novak Djokovic Drawn with Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev at ATP Finals

  • World no.1 Novak Djokovic has been drawn in a group with Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Diego Schwartzman at the upcoming ATP Finals.
  • The men's tennis season finale is going to be held in London from November 15 to 22.
  • Djokovic, 33, will try to clinch the trophy for a record of six times while the Serbian needs to reach the semifinals first by qualifying from the Group Tokyo 1970 containing Russia's world number four Medvedev, German's world number seven Zverev and debutant Schwartzman from Argentina.
  • World number two Rafael Nadal leads Group London 2020 alongside Austrian Dominic Thiem, defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece and Russian Andrey Rublev, who reached the year-ending event with a career-high world ranking of eight.
  • This is the 50th anniversary of the ATP Finals, which was first held in 1970 in Tokyo and it is the tournament's 12th and final edition in London. Next year, it will move to Turin, Italy.

Chen Meng Wins ITTF Women's World Cup Title

  • China's Chen Meng won the first-ever ITTF Women's World Cup title. Chen Meng is the world's No.1 women table tennis player at present. She defeated her Chinese compatriot Sun Yingsha to win the title.
  • The Dishang 2020 ITTF Women's World Cup was held in November 2020 at Weihai, China.
  • The event marked the RESTART of the international table tennis which returned after 8 months due to pandemic. The series is also called #RESTART series of ITTF.
  • Established in 1926, the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) is a federation that governs for all national-level table tennis associations.

KL Rahul Wins Coveted Orange Cap

  • Kings XI Punjab skipper KL Rahul took home the very prestigious Orange Cap after emerging as the top run-getter in IPL 2020 with 670 runs from 14 games. Although Kings XI fell at the last hurdle, losing to CSK in their must-win final league game, Rahul led from the front throughout the tournament.
  • It's been a while since Kings XI Punjab were dumped out of IPL 2020 but their skipper and talisman KL Rahul winning the Orange Cap will come as some solace to them. The fact that the opening batsman was on top of the charts throughout this edition and won the much fancied race easily in the end is an ode to Rahul's consistency.

Mumbai Indians Lift Record 5th IPL Title

  • Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians romped to their record fifth title in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a comfortable five-wicket win over Shreyas Iyer's Delhi Capitals in the summit showdown of the 2020 edition of the cash-rich league.
  • Soon after the Mumbai franchise successfully defended their title, sports and B-town celebrities took to their social media handle to congratulate the five-time champions of the IPL.

Ministry of Sports Approved 6 Khelo India Centres of Excellence

  • The Ministry of Sports has approved 6 Khelo India Centres of Excellence in six different states. Khelo India centre of excellence is an initiative of the Sports Ministry to upgrade the existing sports infrastructure in all states and Union Territories. The ministry has announced a financial support of over 64 crore to upgrade these six Khelo India centres.
  • The aim of creating these Khelo India excellence centres is to create a strong and healthy sports ecosystem in the country.
  • The names of the six Khelo India Centre of Excellence approved by the Ministry of Sports along with financial support extended to them is as follows-
  • States Sports Academy, Sarusajai, Assam with a financial support of Rs. 7.96 crore
  • J. N. S. Complex, Shillong, Meghalaya with a financial support of Rs. 8.39 crore
  • New Sports Complex Silvassa, Daman & Diu with a financial support of Rs. 8.05 crore
  • MP State Academy, Madhya Pradesh with a financial support of Rs. 19 crore
  • Shree Shivchhatrapati Sports Complex, Balewadi, Pune with a financial support of Rs. 16 crore

Delhi Capitals into Maiden IPL Final

  • Shikhar Dhawan's fiery half-century and Marcus Stoinis' all-round show carried Delhi Capitals into their maiden IPL final as they survived some anxious moments before prevailing by 17 runs in the second Qualifier against SunRisers Hyderabad.
  • Breathtaking counter-attacking knocks by Kane Williamson (67) and Abdul Samad (33) threatened to dash Delhi Capitals hopes but Stoinis' timely dismissal of the Kiwi batsman tilted it in his side's favour.
  • The Capitals will now challenge Mumbai Indians for the title on Tuesday, having lost to them in the first Qualifier.
