Byju's Acquires Aakash Educational Services

As managing director of Aakash Educational Services (AESL), Aakash Chaudhry's role is to manage the overall operations of the brick-and-mortar test preparation (prep) leader. Now the country's $180-billion education sector has gone online to adapt to the new reality. Chaudhry may not have imagined that one day he would also have to do an acquisition deal online. This is because edtech decacorn Byju's has closed the deal to acquire AESL for nearly $1 billion.
Chaudhry and Byju's Founder and Chief Executive Officer Byju Raveendran closed the deal over videoconferencing platform Zoom. The stock-and-cash deal is the biggest in the education space.
This partnership brings together two of the largest education brands in India, combining Aakash's pedagogy expertise in the test-prep segment with Byju's content and tech capabilities. The acquisition will help Byju's further dominate the market and increase its lead over its competitors, such as SoftBank-backed Unacademy, Vedantu, and traditional education institutes.

Ashok Soota Sets Up Non-profit Entity for Medical Research

IT veteran Ashok Soota has set up SKAN, a not-for-profit entity that will conduct medical research, and has committed Rs. 200 crore towards the effort.
The research for the projects will be done through reputed partners.
The strategic partner for neurological research is the Centre for Brain Research (CBR) at Indian Institute Science-Bangalore (IISc).
CBR is putting together a consortium to handle the first project on Parkinson's disease.

IIT-Hyderabad to Offer Joint Doctoral Programme with Deakin University

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Hyderabad) is offering joint doctoral programme in collaboration with Deakin University. The programme, as per the institute, will be offered in a wide array of subjects include materials and smart manufacturing, affordable healthcare, food, environment and agriculture, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, cyber-physical systems, and energy.
The candidates need to possess a BTech or MTech degree to be eligible for the doctoral programme, also they have to qualify in the interview round. The qualified candidates can spend between 3 to 12 months at Deakin University as per the research requirements.
The students will get PhD fellowship including the travel expenses to Deakin university. The varsity will also provide a full tuition fee waiver for up to four years. On completing the programme, the candidates will be awarded certificates from both institutes.

Ramesh Pokhriyal Launches 'MyNEP2020' Platform of NCTE Portal

Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal launched the "MyNEP2020" platform of National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) Web Portal which will be operational from April 1 to May 15, 2021.
The 'MyNEP2020' platform will help teachers and educators across the country put forward their suggestions on several teachers' policies in the country.
The platform seeks to invite suggestions/inputs/membership from the stakeholders for preparing a draft for the development of National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST) and National Mission for Mentoring Program membership (NMM).

Hyderabad University Offers Diploma Course in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

The University of Hyderabad (UoH) is offering an online diploma course in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI and ML). The course will be delivered through the Center for Distance and Virtual Learning (CDVL) with the help of the faculty of the School of Computer and Information Sciences (SCIS) and AAIC Technologies Pvt Ltd. This is a one-year online diploma course and the virtual inaugural ceremony of the first batch of the course was held on March 27.
The main aim of the diploma course is to offer a skill-based tailor-made course that can enhance the industry-ready abilities among graduates and working professionals.

Arunachal Gets First Formal Indigenous Knowledge System School

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has inaugurated the state's first formal indigenous language and knowledge system school in East Kameng district.
The first-of-its-kind school called 'Nyubu Nyvgam Yerko' was inaugurated at Rang village near Seppa.
The school will help in promoting and preserving indigenous traditions, culture and language.

TBJEE Announces New Exam Pattern

The Tripura Board of Joint Entrance Examination (TBJEE) announced its new examination pattern for the 2021-22 financial year. Replacing the existing two-day examination schedule with a single day, the common entrance examination is undergoing a revamp with this revision.
According to the new system, the syllabus for each subject would be divided into 10 modules or units. "Question papers for each subject would be of Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) type and there will be 30 compulsory questions for each subject", the TBJEE Joint Director said. Each question in the new system would have four options out of which students would need to mark the correct or closest option in OMR sheets.
The new system, however, comes with a rider of caution as negative marking was introduced with a value of one deductible marks for every wrong answer. In the result announcement, the percentile score of students would be introduced during the publication of results in the new system, besides their ranks.

Delhi Sets up Six-member Committee to Prepare Blueprint for Virtual School

The Delhi government constituted a six-member committee comprising school principals, teachers and IT officials to study the best global practices in virtual schooling and submit a blueprint for the national capital's virtual school.
Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia presided over a meeting to outline the scope of the Delhi Model Virtual School, a first-of-its-kind school that would strive to provide education to students remotely through personalised teaching-learning, effective assessments and the use of cutting edge technology.
The Delhi government had proposed to establish the virtual school in its 2021-22 Budget.
