Ramsey Clark, Former U.S. Attorney General Passes Away

  • Former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, who helped shape U.S. civil rights law during the Johnson administration but went on to travel the globe to fight human rights abuses by his own country as he saw them, has died at age 93.
  • In a lengthy career of representing unpopular causes, Clark defended or gave advice to Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, Liberian political figure Charles Taylor and Iraq's Saddam Hussein.
  • In the 1990s, he helped found the leftist International Action Center in New York, which drew attention in 1999 for street protests condemning the U.S.-led NATO bombing of Yugoslavia.
  • The United Nations recognized Clark's work in 2008 by naming him one of the winners of its prestigious prize in the field of human rights. Others who have received the prize include former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt and South African leader Nelson Mandela.
  • He joined the Justice Department under Democratic President John Kennedy in 1961 and served in top posts until Democratic President Lyndon Johnson nominated him as attorney general in 1967.

Sonu Sood Brand Ambassador for Punjab's Anti-COVID Vaccination Programme

  • Actor Sonu Sood has been made the brand ambassador for Punjab's anti-coronavirus vaccination programme.
  • During the coronavirus-induced lockdown last year, the actor had helped migrants reach their home states.
  • Sood catapulted to the national spotlight for feeding thousands of underprivileged people amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • He was viewed as a messiah of sorts for migrants.
  • Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh made the announcement, a day after his meeting with the actor who called on him at his residence.

  • Prince Philip, the longest serving royal consort in British history who was a constant presence at Queen Elizabeth II's side for decades, died aged 99.
  • The Duke of Edinburgh, as he was officially known, had been by his wife's side throughout her 69-year reign, the longest in British history, during which time he earned a reputation for a tough,
  • The former naval officer admitted he found it hard to give up the military career he loved and to take on the job as the monarch's consort for which there was no clear-cut constitutional role.

India's First Female Cricket Commentator Chandra Naidu Passes Away

  • India's first female cricket commentator Chandra Naidu passed away. She was the daughter of the country's first Test captain CK Naidu. She had done her first commentary during a match between national champions Bombay (now Mumbai) and MCC in Indore in 1977. She had also penned a book titled 'CK Nayudu: A Daughter Remembers' on her late father, who was a distinguished cricketer.

Vivo Ropes in Virat Kohli as Brand Ambassador

  • Chinese smartphone major Vivo appointed cricketer Virat Kohli as its brand ambassador.
  • With the association, Vivo aims to reach the millennials and technologically driven consumers, and a 360-degree marketing approach will characterise the company's association with Kohli.
  • Kohli will be seen spreading awareness and promoting the launch of Vivo's upcoming product series in the pipeline.
  • The association will include all ATL and BTL (above and below the line) activities, including the brand's forthcoming events, TV, print, outdoor and social media campaigns.
  • Along with Aamir Khan and Sara Ali Khan, Vivo is looking at widening its brand reach, and expressed confidence that associating with a sports figure will help the company reach a wider audience.

Ex-Union Minister Digvijaysinh Zala Passes Away

  • Former Union Environment Minister and MLA from Gujarat's Wankaner Digvijaysinh Zala passed away at the age of 88.
  • He was the head of the erstwhile princely state of Wankaner in Saurashtra.
  • Zala was an MLA from Wankaner for the years 1962-67 as an independent candidate and as a member of the Swatantra Party from 1967-71.
  • He, then, joined the Congress and became a Member of Parliament from Surendranagar for two terms from 1979 to 1989.
  • Establishing the Environment ministry under Prime minister Indira Gandhi, he became the first Environment Minister of the country from 1982 to 1984.
  • He also represented India in the United Nations on more than one occasion, speaking on environmental issues facing the world.

Periayarist Anaimuthu Passes Away

  • Periyarist and founder of the Marxist Periyarist Communist Party V. Anaimuthu died due to age related complications. He was 96.
  • Anaimuthu, who published the 20 volumes of collected works of Dravidar Kazhagam founder Periyar, was also instrumental in convincing MPs belonging to the Backward Classes to support the recommendations of the Mandal Commission.
