Poonam Gupta to Head NCAER as its First Woman Director General

  • Poonam Gupta will be new director general of the policy think tank National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER).
  • Gupta, the first woman director general of NCAER, will succeed Shekhar Shah who has led NCAER since 2011 and will complete his second five year term in early May.
  • Gupta is currently working as a lead economist at the World Bank, Washington DC.
  • Prior to joining the World Bank in 2013, she was the Reserve Bank of India chair professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy and a professor of macroeconomics at ICRIER.

Himachal Pradesh Former Minister and BJP Stalwart Mohan Lal Passes Away

  • Former Minister of State for Ayurveda Mohan Lal died. He was 75.
  • The BJP minister was born on May 30, 1945 and has represented the Rajnagar Assembly constituency several times. He was the Minister of State for Ayurveda in Prem Kumar Dhumal's government.

Isamu Akasaki Who Won the Nobel for 'Revolutionary' LED lamp Passes Away

  • Japanese Physicist Isamu Akasaki, a co-winner of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics, has passed away. Akasaki, a professor at the university, had been recognized for the invention which has contributed to bright and energy-saving white light sources, widely known as LED lamps. He was honoured in 1997 by the Japanese government with the Medal with Purple Ribbon, an honour bestowed on those who have made contributions to academic and artistic developments.
  • In 2014, Akasaki, a professor at Meijo University, shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with physicist Hiroshi Amano, a professor at the University of Nagoya, and Japan-born American Shuji Nakamura, a professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He worked with Amano to produce gallium nitride crystals and succeeded in 1989 in creating the world's first blue LED.

Veteran Actress Shashikala Passes Away

  • Veteran Bollywood actress Shashikala is no more. She was 88. The actress passed away in her Mumbai residence.
  • Born in August 1932, Shashikala made a mark with her performance in supporting roles and negative roles in Bollywood films.
  • She has appeared in over 100 Bollywood films including "Nau Do Gyarah", "Jun glee", "Ayee Milan Ki Bela", "Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani", Chhote Sarkar", "Khubsoo rat", "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham", "Baadshah" and "Mujhse Shaadi Karogi" among others.
  • Shashikala was honoured with Padma Shri in 2007 for her contribution to Indian cinema.

Mallika Srinivasan New Chairperson of Public Enterprises Selection Board

  • Mallika Srinivasan, Chairman and Managing Director of Tractors and Farm Equipment (TAFE) Limited has been appointed as the chairperson of the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB).
  • This is for the first time that a private sector specialist has been appointed as the head of the PESB.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Srinivasan as the chairperson of PESB for a period of three years from the date of assumption of charge, or until the attainment of the age of 65 years.

Chingari Ropes in Salman Khan as Brand Ambassador, Investor

  • Homegrown short video platform Chingari roped in Bollywood actor Salman Khan as brand ambassador and investor.
  • Tech4Billion Media owns the Chingari app that allows users to upload videos in 14 languages including English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Odia, Punjabi, Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu.
  • Chingari app was first launched on the Google Play Store in November 2018 and later rebranded and redesigned in June 2020.

Beloved Children's Author Beverly Cleary Passes Away

  • Beloved children's author of US, Beverly Cleary passed away. She was named a Living Legend in 2000 by the Library of Congress. In 2003, she was chosen as one of the winners of the National Medal of Arts. The author whose memories of her Oregon childhood were shared with millions through the likes of Ramona and Beezus Quimby and Henry Huggins.

Mahesh Rangarajan is Vice-Chancellor of Krea University

  • Krea University, the private institute set up with the backing of former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan among others, appointed Ashoka University professor Mahesh Rangarajan as the next Vice-Chancellor. Rangarajan, former Director of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, is currently teaching history and environmental studies at Ashoka University.
