Five Giant Black Hole Pairs Spotted

  • Scientists have identified five pairs of supermassive black holes, each millions of times the mass of the sun, that could help better understand the phenomenon of gravitational waves – ripples in the fabric of space and time.
  • These black hole couples formed when two galaxies collided and merged with each other, forcing their supermassive black holes close together.

Launch of James Webb Space Telescope Delayed

  • NASA has postponed the launch of James Webb Space Telescope from October 2018 to around mid-2019 due to issues related to integration of various spacecraft elements. It is now likely to be launched between March and June 2019.
  • The James Webb Space Telescope, an international project led by NASA with its partners ESA (European Space Agency) and the Canadian Space Agency, will be successor to NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.

Fourth Gravitational Wave Signal Detected

  • Scientists have announced the detection of a fourth gravitational wave signal coming as a result of the merger of two black holes.
  • It is the first time this phenomenon has been measured simultaneously by both the US-based LIGO and Italy-based Virgo detectors.
  • The first direct evidence of gravitational waves was detected in February 2016.

First Lunar Station

  • Russia and the United States agreed to cooperate on a NASA-led project to build the first lunar space station, part of a long-term project to send humans to Mars.
  • The project envisages building a crew-tended spaceport in lunar orbit that would serve as a gateway to deep space and the lunar surface.
